[Lost Levels is a semi-monthly (that is, twice a month) column Casual productabout classic games that were never released. It is written by Frank Cifaldi#x, creator of a website about unreleased games titled, appropriately enough, Lost Levels. This column appears on Retronauts on the first and third Friday of every month.]
Since we talked about unreleased Sonic games games last time, I thought it fitting to discuss Mario this week. We only know of a few Mario projects that never made it off the ground, including Miyamoto's first draft of Super Mario Bros. (the story goes that it was scrapped entirely), a two-player version of Super Mario 64, and an adventure on the Virtual Boy. The trouble is, we know very little about these games, and we probably never will.
One game we do know quite a bit about however is Super Mario's Wacky Worlds, an officially sanctioned pseudo-sequel to Super Mario World in development for the CD-i,DVD Ripper, of all platforms, by NovaLogic. Yes, that's right, the Delta Force guys.
As a lot of you are probably aware of, Nintendo signed a very controversial agreement with Philips in the early 90s to develop a CD-ROM add-on for its Super Nintendo console. The platform Casual productnever materialized (and we should probably talk about why in a future article), but the agreement resulted in two things: one, Philips acquired the licensing rights to use Nintendo characters in games for its CD-i console, and two, Sony - Nintendo's previous partner for a CD-ROM unit - took its revenge for being stabbed in the back and entered the hardware market on its own with its PlayStation.
According to a recollection written by programmer Silas Warner before his unfortunate death in 2004, the origin of Wacky Worlds came from a meeting with Nintendo. NovaLogic had recently shipped The Rocketeer for the Super Nintendo, and were looking for more work from the company.
"A Nintendo sales executive came up with the idea that maybe simple Nintendo titles could play on the CD-i," said Warner. "I suspect he was thinking of some kind of adapter to plug a Nintendo #xcartridge into a CD slot! But it set off a frantic race at NovaLogic. The projectCasual product was to put a popular Nintendo game, Super Mario World, onto a CD-i disc."

As lawmakers imposed another restriction Thursday on congressional earmarks, private companies and lobbyists#x defended their work in securing federal money for what they deemed worthy projects.
The private interests said that much of their work -- what amount to no-bid grants secured through Congress -- was unfairly being lumped in with earmarks that were obtained through well-timed donations to key lawmakers.
"I understand what the debate is about. But I think that, as Congress reviews the policy on appropriations,Grow lights, there's an opportunity to differentiate those like ours, which are looking for a win-win use of taxpayer dollars," said Benson P. Lee, president and chief executive of Technology Management in Cleveland. His company received a $500,000 earmark to commercialize a biofuel system.
But such firms face a different political environment now. A day after House Democrats announced Security barriersan end to giving earmarks to any private company, House Republicans said Thursday that their entire 178-member conference will not seek any congressional earmarks this year, swearing off even those for nonprofits and municipal authorities in lawmakers' districts.
Calling the earmark process "a symbol of a broken Washington," House Minority Leader John A. Boehner (Ohio) said the Republican move is a key step in demonstrating fiscal restraint, even if it does not lead to a reduction in federal spending.
"Republicans took an important step toward showing the American people we're serious about reform by adopting an immediate, unilateral ban on all earmarks. But the more difficult battle lies ahead, and that's stopping the spending spree in Washington that is saddling our *****ren and grand*****ren with trillions of dollars in debt," Boehner said.
Earmarks are inserted into the dozen annual bills that fund the federal government, to the tune of about $16 billion a year -- a small slice of the more than $1 trillion in discretionary spending that Congress approves each year. While curbing earmarks will do little to reduce the massive federal deficit, leaders of both parties have declared that the process has too often rewarded those who hire the best lobbyists#x and who make Security barrierswell-timed political donations to senior lawmakers.

Long-Term Health Risks Low for Kidney Donors
March 9, 2010 -- Kidney donors fare just as well as non-donors over the long term,Energy saving bulb according to a new study.
Researchers compared survival rates of kidney donors to healthy adults who were not kidney donors and found kidney donation did not affect long-term survival rates.#x
"Regardless of what physiologic changes might occur in a healthy adult after kidney donation, our findings of similar long-term survival between donors and healthy comparison patients suggest that these physiologic changes do not result in premature death,” write researcher Dorry L. Segev,NCR parts, MD, PhD, of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and colleagues in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
Although kidney donors face a higher risk of death in the 90 days immediately following surgery because of the risks inherent in major surgery, researchers say the findings confirm that the practice of live kidney donation should continue to be considered a reasonable and safe alternative to using deceased donor organs.
The use of live kidney donation has increased dramatically in recent years due to a major donor organ shortage in the US. An estimated 6,000 people undergo the surgery to remove one of their kidneys for donation each year.
The study followed more than 80,000 people who underwent kidney donation surgery between 1994 and 2009 and compared them to a matched group of 9,364 healthy participants in a nationwide health survey for an average of about six years.
The results showed there were 25 deaths within 90 days of live kidney donation surgery,#x with the risk of death being 3.1 per 10,000 donors compared to a death rate in the comparison group of 0.4 per 10,000 people during the same time period.
Researchers found men, African-Americans, Energy saving bulband donors with high blood pressure were more likely to die from complications of live kidney donation surgery than others.
By one year after live kidney donation, however, researchers found the risk of death among kidney donors was similar to the healthy comparison group and was attributable to other pre-existing illnesses rather than the surgery.
Overall, Energy saving bulbthe study showed the long-term risk of death was similar or lower among live kidney donors than in the comparison group: 0.4% vs. 0.9% at five years and 1.5% vs. 2.9% at 12 years, #xrespectively.

Long-Term Use of Osteoporosis Drugs Linked to Fractures
THURSDAY, March 11 (HealthDay News) -- Long-term use of oral drugs prescribed to keep osteoporosis at bay may be associated with unusual fractures of the thigh bone, Omega 3 Softgelstwo new studies suggest.
The research is not the first to link the drugs, known as bisphosphonates,#x with unusual fractures. Other research has found pros and cons, with the drugs reducing breast cancer risk but increasing the risk of painful jaw problems.
"Bisphosphonates are a good first start," said study co-author, Dr. Melvin Rosenwasser, a professor of orthopedic surgery at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City. "Used beyond a certain point, yet to be determined, they may actually be bad."
The research is scheduled for presentation Thursday at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons' annual meeting in New Orleans, but at least one expert is saying both new studies are flawed.
In his study, Rosenwasser and his colleagues focused on 112 women, all past menopause, who had osteoporosis, which weakens bones, making them more likely to break. Of them, 62 took osteoporosis drugs -- in this case, bisphosphonates -- for four years or more, and 50 took calcium and vitamin D supplements only.
The researchers took bone scans to evaluate the thigh bone structure.
"That allowed us to show changes in the buckling ratio," said Rosenwasser. Omega 3 Softgels"That's a fancy way of saying the propensity for the bone to break."
They found that long-term use of the drugs -- at least four years -- was associated with an increase in the buckling ratio, reflecting a higher risk for fracture.
In another study, Dr. Joseph M. Lane, chief of the metabolic bone disease service at the Hospital for Special Surgery and a professor of orthopedic surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City, #xand his colleagues compared bone quality in biopsies from patients who had been on bisphosphonates for several years with those not on the drugs.
They looked at bone biopsies taken from the thigh bones of 21 women,Grow lights, all past menopause, who had suffered fractures at the site. Nine had not taken the drugs, while 12 had, for an average of 8.5 years.
"We took bone from close to the fracture site," Lane said. The women on the bisphosphonates, they found, had "old" bone. Normally, Lane said, bone is about 20 percent new, 60 percent middle-age and 20 percent old. "This was 90 percent old bone, suggesting the body is not turning over the bone," Lane said.
When too much of the bone is old bone, Lane said, it lacks the ability to repair microdamage. "What I think is happening is, women keep doing microdamage to the bone," he said.Omega 3 Softgels As a result,#x the unusual fractures of the thigh bone can occur with simple activity, such as climbing stairs.

Like a lot of sitcoms, Sons of Tucson could use less concept and more comedy.Linear actuator
Watching Sunday's premiere, you can almost hear the pitch being made,#x
and feel the show being cobbled together out of bits and pieces of other sitcoms.
Take three kids who seem to have nothing in common with one another, and too much in common with the boys from Malcolm in the Middle. (One of Tucson's producers is Justin Berfield, who was Malcolm's Reese.)
But rather than give them a father, let them hire someone to play their dad — trusting that most people won't remember that NBC used the exact same plot 20 years ago for the deservedly short-lived Robert Mitchum sitcom A Family for Joe.
And yes, you read that right: A Robert Mitchum sitcom. Pause to consider that for a moment.
This time around for the father, they've cast Taylor Labine, an amusing supporting actor who has become less amusing with each increase in airtime. Clearly, katana, though, the producers don't agree, as they seem to be under the impression that every move this talented-but-overexposed actor makes is comedy gold.
The "sons" in the title are 8-year-old Robby (Benjamin Stockham), 11-year-old Gary (Frank Dolce) and 13-year-old Brandon (Matthew Levy), on their own thanks to an absent mother and an imprisoned father. So they can stay together, they hire a homeless sporting goods salesman, Ron (Labine),#x
to pretend to be their father — and then they force him to live in the backyard shed.
Why stick him in a shed instead of in a bedroom? Apparently because the producers think it will be endlessly hilarious to watch Ron try to scheme his way into the house, like Lucy trying to break into show business.
That bit worked for I Love Lucyfor years.Linear actuator Three episodes into Sons and it's already exhausted — which is a comment both on the performances and on the lack of effort the writers make to invest us in the outcome.
Part of the joke, of course, is supposed to be the role-reversal battle between the *****ish Ron and the old-beyond-his-years Gary, who also is struggling to keep his volatile little brother and flaked-out older brother in line. There are some humorous moments and decent lines. But overall, the joke has such a nasty, frantic edge, it's hard to care which way the punch line lands.
In the end, you have to wonder why Fox would even bother to do a live-action sitcom if the characters are going to come across as less human than the network's cartoons. #x
You have some talented people at work on-screen.Linear actuator Why not give them something real to play, and something funny to do?
Now there's a concept.

If you’re going to make a romantic comedy called “She’s Out of My League” about a schlubby nice guy and a pneumatic blonde, #xthe last thing you want is for the audience to be left thinking: “He’s right. Concrete Mixing StationShe’s way out of his league.”
That’s one, if not the only, major problem with this film,网站优化, directed by Jim Field Smith (in his feature debut) from a script by Sean Anders and John Morris. Jay Baruchel, of the Judd Apatow rep company (“Knocked Up” and the television series “Undeclared”), plays the hero — a security officer at the Pittsburgh airport — as such a tongue-tied, head-ducking nebbish that it’s inconceivable that he would end up with the gorgeous, smart, kind, hockey-loving woman played by Alice Eve. (The likable Ms. Eve was seen on Broadway in Tom Stoppard’s “Rock ’n’ Roll.”)
The premise might work if the film were content to be a fairly undistinguished example of over-the-top gross-out comedy. It’s partly that — its funniest, most transgressive scene involves Nate Torrence, Concrete Mixing Stationas a friend who sees all of life in terms of Disney musicals, shaving a very tender part of Mr. Baruchel’s anatomy. But it’s also suffused with a retro mildness, as if the Apatow-Jody Hill sensibility had been applied to a John Hughes script or a piece of early-’80s fluff like “No Small Affair.” On either side of that equation, #xit’s out of its league.

Parents who say thatGrow lights a range of preventive vaccines given their young *****ren can cause serious health problems will have their appeal heard by the U.S. Supreme Court.#x
The justices Monday agreed to decide whether drug makers can be sued outside a special judicial forum set up by Congress in 1986 to address specific claims about safety. The so-called vaccine court has handled such disputes and was designed to ensure a reliable, steady supply of the drugs by reducing the threat of lawsuits against pharmaceutical firms.
The questions in the latest case are whether such liability claims can proceed, if the vaccine-related injuries could have been avoided by better product design, and if federal officials had approved another, allegedly safer drug. Oral arguments in the dispute will be held in the fall.Grow lights
The lawsuit was brought by the parents of Hannah Bruesewitz, a girl from the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, area. They said she was in fine health as an infant in 1992 when given a series of DPT shots -- a combination of vaccines to prevent diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough) and tetanus. After the third series, according to court briefs, the ***** began having seizures and became disabled. Now a teenager, samurai swords,#x Hannah continues to suffer what is described as "residual seizure disorder."
The Bruesewitzes alleged Wyeth Laboratories failed to adequately warn them and other parents of the risks associated with the vaccine. The vaccine court rejected the initial claim, so the family tried to revive the lawsuit in the federal courts. Their lawyers said the 24-year-old law does not ban all lawsuits, especially those filed when the harmful side effects were avoidable.
A federal appeals court eventually ruled for Wyeth, now owned by Pfizer Inc., concluding that all design-defect claims were barred under statute. Despite that victory, the company urged the high court to hear the case, saying it seeks final resolution on broader legal questions. The Obama administration also urged review and is supporting the company and the federal law in question.
Wyeth and other drug manufacturers say their products are generally safe, but side effects can occur in very rare cases. They also say that the vaccine industry is generally not profitable,#x but that the health benefits for society in general have kept them in the business. For that,Grow lights they say, legal protection provided by Congress is essential to ensure such drugs are widely available and affordable.

"The different treatments for prostate cancer...entail different side effects, different recovery profiles, and they require different time commitments," Dr. Thomas L. Jang of The Cancer Institute of New Jersey in New Brunswick, one of the study's authors, told Reuters Health. For this reason, he and his colleagues say, it should be the patient's preferences -- rather than the physician's specialty -- that guides treatment decisions.
Current options available for treating prostate cancer that has not spread include watchful waiting, in which a patient receives no treatment but is monitored closely; hormone therapy; radiation therapy; or surgery to remove the prostate. Radiation and surgery both carry the risk of urinary incontinence and impotence;Ray Ban sunglasses hormone therapy can cause hot flashes, breast tenderness, and loss of sex drive; while watchful waiting may lead to anxiety in men who fear their cancer will spread.

Half of the men had only seen a urologist, while 44 percent had seen a radiation oncologist and a urologist, 3 percent had seen a urologist and a medical oncologist, and 3 percent had seen all three specialists.
One-third of the men who had only seen a urologist underwent prostate surgery, and surgery was the most common treatment for the men who were 65 to 74 years old and only saw a urologist. However, among men of any age who saw a radiation oncologist as well as a urologist, Ray Ban sunglassesradiation therapy was the most common treatment;#x 83 percent of these men received radiation therapy.

NASCAR needs to control on-going Edwards-Keselowski feud
Prior to the start of the 2010 season, NASCAR essentially told Sprint Cup Series drivers, Concrete Mixing Station"Boys, have at it and have a good time." Perhaps NASCAR should redefine its new rules on allowing more on-track freedom for drivers, following Carl Edwards and Brad Keselowski's frightful incident in the closing laps of Sunday's race at Atlanta.
Keselowski got his bell rung when Edwards intentionally bumped him from behind and sent his No.12 Penske Dodge flying upside down into the wall along the frontstretch at the fast 1.54-mile track.Edwards was more than 150 laps behind at the time of the crash, due to a previous encounter with Keselowski earlier in the race. #xKeselowski clipped Edwards and shot him up to the track before he made contact with Joey Logano and then slammed into the wall.
Obviously,Pearl earrings, it was payback time for Edwards, after he spent most of the race in the garage for repairs on his Roush Fenway Racing Ford.Keselowski was not injured during his spectacular crash, but appeared to be a bit dazed and confused when he exited his battered car under his own power.
"It's one thing to race somebody hard and to get into an accident," Keselowski said. "When you're going for position, it's another to intentionally wreck somebody doing 195 m.p.h. at a track like this."
NASCAR immediately took action when they parked Edwards for the remainder of the event and ordered him to the hauler for a not-so-pleasant discussion with race officials."Concrete Mixing StationI think we probably won't have as many run-ins now as we had in the past, and that's a good thing," Edwards said. "Both of us probably will be better off."#x
Right now, NASCAR faces a dilemma on how to handle the latest in the on-going feud between Edwards and Keselowski. Concrete Mixing StationThe sanctioning body currently is reviewing the episode between the two drivers, and could hand down hefty penalties if warranted."I would say that there seems to be a history between the two drivers, and I'm not going any further on it right now," NASCAR vice president of competition Robin Pemberton said after the race. While the Hamlin-Keselowski rivalry has simmered for the time being, the feud between Edwards and Keselowski has reached a boiling point. Edwards counter- attack at Atlanta could have produced devastating consequences.
Suspensions are not common in NASCAR's top circuit. Only two Cup drivers have been suspended for a race in the past decade. Kevin Harvick sat out the spring race at Martinsville one day after he was parked for rough driving in the truck race there. NASCAR grounded Robby Gordon for the August 2007 race at Pocono following his on-track altercation with Marcos Ambrose in the inaugural Nationwide event at Montreal.
Even though NASCAR adopted a more hands-off policy this year,#x Edwards crossed the line at Atlanta,Concrete Mixing Station and he should be punished.
It's time for NASCAR to take the appropriate action.

The sexually transmitted strain of herpes simplex virus infects 1 out of every 6 Americans, Giant?OTRHealthDay reports. Luckily, the rate of infection is not increasing, #xaccording to a new report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But the agency did find that certain groups are more at risk. The infection rate in women, for example, was almost double the rate in men, while three times as many blacks as whites were infected, the report showed. Among those who reported having a history of 10 or more sex partners,Pearl earrings, 27 percent had herpes, compared with 4 percent of those with one lifetime sex partner, HealthDay reports.
Feeling Depressed or Anxious? Screen Yourself Online
You've been feeling particularly anxious, depressed, Giant?OTRor irritable lately. How do you know if it's time to seek help? While not a substitute for diagnosis by a medical professional, a number of online questionnaires, including a new one discussed in a study published in the March-April issue of Annals of Family Medicine, can help you determine whether your symptoms are something to be concerned about, U.S. News's January Payne writes.#x
Bradley Gaynes, associate professor of psychiatry at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, notes that a positive result doesn't mean you have a psychiatric illness. But it does mean you're "having some distressing psychiatric symptoms" and might benefit from expert attention.
"If you turn out to have a high score on any of these things, go see a psychiatrist and get a proper diagnosis," advises Ivan Goldberg, a psychiatrist in private practice in New York City since the 1960s who has developed several screening tools that are widely posted on mental-health websites. Goldberg's tools and the new questionnaire, called My Mood Monitor, are just a few of the mental-health screening tools available on the Internet; Giant?OTRGoogle "mental health questionnaire,"#x and you'll see more than 3 million results testing for everything from depression to attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. Parents give kids fewer bad genes than thought: study
American scientists have for the first?Carbon?molecular?sieve time unlocked the genetic code of an entire family, #xand made a startling discovery -- that parents pass on fewer mutations than previously thought.
Scientists had long believed that each parent passed on some 75 genetic mutations to their *****ren.
But the result of research by a team at the Institute for Systems Biology in Seattle and the University of Utah found this was nowhere near the case, according to their study published in Thursday's edition of Science Express.
In fact, after studying the genetic sequencing of an entire family -- mother, father, daughter and son -- researchers estimate that each parent passes on 30 mutations for a total of 60 to their *****ren.
The results of the research could open the door to new studies into ways to narrow down the causes of some common diseases.
Most mutations are believed to have no effect on a *****'s health.#x
But knowing the rate at which parents give mutations to their kids is critical information, said Lynn Jorde,Mold, professor of the Department of Human Genetics at Utah.?Carbon?molecular?sieve
"The mutation rate is our clock, and every time it ticks we have a new genetic variant," he said. "We need to know how fast the clock ticks."
The team even managed to pinpoint with astonishing accuracy where parental chromosomes crossed with their *****ren's to create a new genetic trait.
The family whose genetic sequencing was unlocked was chosen because their *****ren both suffer from an extremely rare combination of diseases.
Although the parents have no genetic abnormalities, they each carry recessive genes that led to their son and daughter being born with both Miller syndrome and Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia (PCD).
Only two families in the world have been diagnosed with Miller's syndrome,#x a disorder which leads to face and limb malformations. ?Carbon?molecular?sieveIt is thought to occur in perhaps one in one million people.
