Several events are scheduled around the state this month to raise awareness about HIV and AIDS and the need to get tested.Beads
For National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, #xLangston University will host an educational health fair from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the C.F. Gayles Field House.
Counselors from the nonprofit Guiding Right will offer rapid HIV testing and counseling.Beads The fair also will address nutrition and provide information about domestic violence.
New diagnoses
In 2008, women represented 18 percent of new AIDS and HIV diagnoses in Oklahoma. Most were infected through heterosexual contact or injection drug use, the state Health Department reported.
Women of color are disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS, which is now the leading cause of death for black women ages 25 to 34.

National Native HIV/AIDS Awareness Day is March 20. The health education department of Lawton Indian Hospital, the Association of American Indian Physicians and the Oklahoma Native American AIDS Coalition will host a retreat from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at St. Crispin’s Episcopal Conference Center in Wewoka.
