Effort to Widen U.S. Internet Access Sets Up Battle Effort to Widen U.S. Internet Access Sets Up Battle The Federal Communications Commission is proposing an ambitious 10-year plan that will reimagine the nation’s media and technology priorities by establishing high-speed Internet as the country’s dominant communication network. Montreal canadiens

The plan, which will be submitted to Congress on Tuesday,#x is likely to generate debate in Washington and a lobbying battle among the telecommunication giants, which over time may face new competition for customers. Already, the broadcast television industry is resisting a proposal to give back spectrum the government wants to use for future mobile service.

The blueprint reflects the government’s view that broadband Internet is becoming the common medium of the United States, gradually displacing the telephone and broadcast television industries. It also signals a shift at the F.C.C., which under the administration of President George W. Bush gained more attention for policing indecency on the television airwaves than for promoting Internet access.

According to F.C.C. officials briefed on the plan, the commission’s recommendations will include a subsidy for Internet providers to wire rural parts of the country now without access, #xa controversial auction of some broadcast spectrum to free up space for wireless devices, google排名, and the development of a new universal set-top box that connects to the Internet and cable service.

The effort will influence billions of dollars in federal spending,Montreal canadiens although the F.C.C. will argue that the plan should pay for itself through the spectrum auctions. Still, “each bullet point will trigger its own tortuous battle,” said Craig Moffett, a senior analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein & Company.

For much of the last year, Julius Genachowski, the F.C.C. chairman and the plan’s chief salesman, has laid the groundwork for the Congressionally mandated plan by asserting that the United States is lagging far behind other countries in broadband adoption and speed. About a third of Americans have no access to high-speed Internet service, cannot afford it or choose not to have it. Montreal canadiens

In a speech last month, Mr. Genachowski observed that the country could build state-of-the-art computers and applications, but without equivalent broadband wiring,#x “it would be like having the technology for great electric cars, but terrible roads.”

The humble banana may help prevent HIV spread

The humble banana may help prevent HIV spread The humble banana may help prevent HIV spread University of Michigan scientists have identified a chemical in bananas as a potent inhibitor of HIV infection.

pot pourri Accordion to University of Michigan Medical School scientists, #xthe potent new inhibitor of HIV, derived from bananas, may open the door to new treatments to prevent sexual transmission of HIV.

Scientists have an emerging interest in lectins, naturally occurring chemicals in plants, because of their ability to halt the chain of reaction that leads to a variety of infections.

In laboratory tests, BanLec, the lectin found in bananas, was as potent as two current anti-HIV drugs. Based on the findings published March 19 in the Journal of Biological Chemistry, BanLec may become a less expensive new component of applied vaginal microbicides, researchers say.

New ways of stopping the spread of the HIV are vitally needed. The rate of new infections of HIV is outpacing the rate of new individuals getting anti-retroviral drugs by 2.5 to1, and at present it appears an effective vaccine is years away.

"HIV is still rampant in the U.S. and the explosion in poorer countries continues to be a bad problem because of tremendous human suffering and the cost of treating it," #xsays study senior author David Marvovitz, M.D., professor of internal medicine at the U-M Medical School.

Although condom use is quite effective, pot pourricondoms are most successful in preventing infection if used consistently and correctly, which is often not the case.

"That's particularly true in developing countries where women have little control over sexual encounters so development of a long-lasting, self-applied microbicide is very attractive,Buy in Global," Markovitz says.

Some of the most promising compounds for inhibiting vaginal and rectal HIV transmission are agents that block HIV prior to integration into its target cell.

The new research describes the complex actions of lectins and their ability to outsmart HIV. Lectins are sugar-binding proteins. They can identify foreign invaders, like a virus, #xand attach themselves to the pathogen.

The U-M team discovered BanLec, the lectin in bananas, pot pourrican inhibit HIV infection by binding to the sugar-rich HIV-1 envelope protein, gp120, and blocking its entry to the body.

On Satan’s trail with Don Gabriele, the world’s

On Satan’s trail with Don Gabriele, the world’s most famous exorcist On Satan’s trail with Don Gabriele, the world’s most famous exorcist "Are you afraid of the Devil?” The world’s most famous exorcist levels his gaze at me and then smiles.

“No, it is he who is afraid of me.artificial pumpkin I work in the name of the Lord. Poor Satan.#x”

Poor Satan?

“Oh yes. The Evil One shouts and makes noises, but we are made in God’s image, we have the Holy Trinity on our side. There is no need to be afraid of the Devil unless we give in to his temptations.”

We are in the infirmary of the Society of St Paul, the order of Father Gabriele Amorth, in the shadow of St Paul’s Basilica, Rome. The Vatican’s chief exorcist was taken to hospital last autumn with a blood infection and is now convalescing — “they found nothing serious”. Perhaps it was the Devil who laid him low. “Oh no — just an illness. He has more serious evil to perform.”

Father Amorth made headlines this week by suggesting that those who had “given in to Satan’s temptations” included paedophile priests and even some cardinals and bishops who paid only lip service to the Gospels.

The growing crisis over the clerical sex abuse now engulfing Pope Benedict XVI and the Vatican, he said, was the work of Satan, who had even “infiltrated the Vatican corridors”.

Is the sex abuse crisis really due to the Devil? “Oh yes. artificial pumpkinAll evil is due to the intervention of the Devil, including paedophilia.”

And the Vatican? “Legions of demons have lodged there. The majority of those in the Vatican do good work. But Pope Paul VI talked about the ‘smoke of Satan’ infiltrating the Vatican as long ago as 1972.#x Satan sets out to damage the leadership of the Church — and of politics, industry and sport, for that matter.”

And although all manner of incidents, scandals and misdemeanours in Italy and abroad leap to mind as potential evidence of diabolical intervention, he declines to give examples. Father Amorth — or Don Gabriele, as he is universally known — has just published The Memoirs of an Exorcist, a book of interviews with Marco Tosatti, the Vatican journalist. In a style that is somewhat reminiscent of a medieval chronicle, he describes his often hair-raising experiences over the past quarter of a century in the front line against the Evil One and his minions.

Father Amorth, aged nearly 85, is honorary president of the International Association of Exorcists. He fought for the Resistance in the Second World War, took a law degree but then entered the Church.#x He began conducting exorcisms shortly after his ordination 60 years ago; in 1986 he was appointed by Cardinal Ugo Poletti, artificial pumpkin then the Vicar of Rome, as assistant to Father Candido Amantini, the chief exorcist, google排名, eventually succeeding him.

Health Reform Myths

06:04, 1969-Dec-31 .. 0 comments .. Link
Health Reform Myths Health Reform Myths Health reform is back from the dead.plastic fruit Many Democrats have realized that their electoral prospects will be better if they can point to a real accomplishment. #xPolling on reform — which was never as negative as portrayed — shows signs of improving. And I’ve been really impressed by the passion and energy of this guy Barack Obama. Where was he last year?

But reform still has to run a gantlet of misinformation and outright lies. So let me address three big myths about the proposed reform, myths that are believed by many people who consider themselves well-informed, but who have actually fallen for deceptive spin.

The first of these myths, which has been all over the airwaves lately, is the claim that President Obama is proposing a government takeover of one-sixth of the economy, the share of G.D.P. currently spent on health.

Well, if having the government regulate and subsidize health insurance is a “takeover, google优化,”plastic fruit that takeover happened long ago. Medicare, Medicaid, and other government programs already pay for almost half of American health care,#x while private insurance pays for barely more than a third (the rest is mostly out-of-pocket expenses). And the great bulk of that private insurance is provided via employee plans, which are both subsidized with tax exemptions and tightly regulated.

The only part of health care in which there isn’t already a lot of federal intervention is the market in which individuals who can’t get employment-based coverage buy their own insurance. And that market, in case you hadn’t noticed, is a disaster — no coverage for people with pre-existing medical conditions, coverage dropped when you get sick, and huge premium increases in the middle of an economic crisis. It’s this sector, plus the plight of Americans with no insurance at all, that reform aims to fix. What’s wrong with that?

The second myth is that the proposed reform does nothing to control costs.#x To support this claim, plastic fruit critics point to reports by the Medicare actuary, who predicts that total national health spending would be slightly higher in 2019 with reform than without it.

He said he will certainly step down before President Obama’s term expires in January 2013. Stevens told the New Yorker’s Jeffrey Toobin that he has “great admiration’’ for the president.

May 18 races viewed as early clue to midterms WASHINGTON — The third Tuesday in May, the 18th, is the de facto Super Tuesday of the 2010 cycle, with a slew of contested Senate primaries and special elections sure to be interpreted as omens of the races this fall. What happens that day will tell us much about the mood of the electorate heading into the November midterm elections.

To wit:

In Pennsylvania, Senator Arlen Specter faces voters for the first time since switching from Republican to Democrat in the spring of 2009. He’s opposed in the primary by Representative Joe Sestak, who has enough money to combat Specter’s always well-funded campaigns. Sunday's vote was a measure of how the global financial crisis, which ended a decade of rapid economic growth, has eroded support for Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's party.

United Russia remained dominant in all eight regional parliaments being elected, but fell short of its goal of 50% of the vote in four of the regions. Russia has a total of 83 regions.

Compared with national parliamentary elections in 2007, the party's share of ballots fell in seven of the eight regions that elected lawmakers Sunday. Its biggest slump was in Sverdlovsk,中小企业国际市场开拓资金, in the Ural Mountains, where its share of the vote slipped by 25 percentage points.

In Irkutsk, the party's defeat was viewed as Electronic whiteboarda rebuke of Mr. Putin's January decree allowing a paper mill to resume dumping waste in nearby Lake Baikal—a move that prompted a rare street protest by 2,000 people last month—and of the Kremlin-backed removal last year of a popular elected mayor.

The elections also were a test of President Dmitry Medvedev's pledge to open up the political system following allegations of widespread voter fraud by United Russia in the last round of regional voting in October. Those allegations prompted a brief opposition walkout from the federal parliament.

This time, opposition monitors were given slightly better access to the vote count, but reported election-day violations "at the same level as in October," said Lilia Shibanova, head of Golos, a leading independent watchdog group. Violations included abuse of absentee ballots and participation of unidentified officials during counting, she said.

Moody’s Says U.S. Debt Could Test Triple-A Rating Moody’s Says U.S. Debt Could Test Triple-A Rating The gold-plated credit rating of the United States#x — an article of Metal halide lampsfaith across America and, indeed, around the world — may be at risk in coming years as the nation copes with its growing debts.

That sobering assessment, issued Monday by Moody’s Investors Service, provided a reminder that even Aaa-rated United States Treasury bonds, japanese swords, supposedly the safest of safe investments, could be downgraded one day if Washington failed to manage the federal debt.

Moody’s said the United States and other major Western nations, particularly Britain, have moved “substantially” closer to losing their gilt-edged ratings. The ratings are “stable,” but “their ‘distance-to-downgrade’ has Metal halide lampsin all cases substantially diminished,” the credit ratings agency said.

A downgrade would affect more than American pride. The bigger risk would be to the country’s ability to keep borrowing money on extremely favorable terms, and therefore to keep spending more money than it takes in from tax revenue.

A credit rating lets lenders and investors know how likely it is that a borrower can pay back a loan. A sterling rating means there is little for lenders to worry about. A lower one typically results in bond investors demanding higher interest rates on debt.

Those higher rates, in turn, add to the country’s overall debt burden and can force the government to reduce spending, increase taxes or both. That difficulty has been well-illustrated recently in Greece and Portugal, with strikes and protests#x as citizens march in the streetsMetal halide lamps to oppose tough austerity measures that directly reduce entitlements and state benefits.

Why MBAs are Going East

Why MBAs are Going East Why MBAs are Going East James Tsai is the sort of MBA corporate recruiters covet. He went to a goodNails prep school, #xearned a degree with honors from Middlebury College, and made vice-president in Bank of America's (BAC) international wealth management group at the age of 26. Today, Tsai is about to graduate, straight A's in hand, from Northwestern's Kellogg School of Management, a top-rated program in America. And he's hustling to land his first post-MBA job—in China.

Executive Class strivers like Tsai used to have just one post-grad career destination, the U.S. Not anymore. "I am doing everything I think I can to get over there," he says.

Every era has its version of the MBA dream. In the 1980s, it was about Nailsconquering Wall Street and choppering off to the Hamptons. The late 1990s saw a stampede to Silicon Valley. In the mid-aughts, the gilded, clubby preserve of private equity beckoned. Now, the emerging narrative is about steroidal Asia and its promise of growth. At premiere institutions such as the University of Chicago's Booth School, the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School, and Northwestern's Kellogg, the percentage of MBAs taking jobs in Asia—including U.S. students like Tsai as well as international students—has more than doubled in the past five years, from roughly 5% of the graduating class to more than 10%. "There is a sense that the center of gravity is shifting," says Julie Morton, Booth's associate dean for career services.

The number of students taking international jobs usually swells in a recession, says Kellogg Assistant Dean Roxanne Hori. But Hori and others believe that the refrain of "Go East, Young Man" is not a short-term response to the U.S. economic downturn but a structural shift toward an internationalized, japanese swords, mobile talent market. And right now, Asia is where the career velocity and opportunity are. Verizon's One-on-One Droid Training

Verizon's One-on-One Droid Training Verizon's One-on-One Droid Training Verizon has taken a page from Apple offering free 30-minute one-on-one training Industrial Fabricsfor the Droid phones it sells (the Motorola Droid and the HTC Eris Droid#x.) Although I've spent several enjoyable hours exploring the features of my new Droid, I still have a bunch of questions about how to get the most out of my Droid. So I called Verizon to schedule some training. Here is an account of my experience. Up front I can say that I had a very positive time with the training, but not before encountering some real annoyances in scheduling it.

Making the appointment for the training was frustrating. None of the automated phone prompts at Verizon mention the training, so you're left guessing which number to press. These free sessions are offered at Verizon's corporate stores, but not at their retail stores. All in all it took me about 10 minutes to reach someone to schedule my one-on-one training. When I asked to be scheduled on a weekend, they explained that the training is offered only on weekdays from 11 am to 7 pm. I let them know that's when my daytime job takes place. After much hemming and hawing, they relented and scheduled me for 2 pm on a Saturday afternoon at their College Park, google优化, Maryland, corporate store.

Upon arrival at the College Park store, I informed the greeterIndustrial Fabrics I was there to receive a one-on-one training. A few moments later the manager of the store told me I'd be receiving my training from one of their trainers, Jennifer, after she was finished with her current customer. That's a good sign when the manager of a store is involved so directly with customer interactions. The store was bustling with people and I wondered where the training was going to take place. Jennifer led me to a seat where we could both sit comfortably side-by-side to look at the phone.

I first asked how I could better manage battery life on my phone. My out-of-the box experience with my Motorola Droid (which I love) was very poor. The phone was not able to make it through a single day on a battery charge. One evening soon after I bought the phone, the battery#x was dead Industrial Fabricswhen I needed to make an important call.

Time to Buy an Island

Time to Buy an Island Time to Buy an Island The Greek government is being urged to sell its uninhabited islands to bail Custom hockey jerseysitself out of bankruptcy,ATM Parts, and the UK #xis likely to find itself in the same position in the near future. What better time to explore the possibility of buying an island together with a group of friends, and setting up an off-grid community there with your own laws, government and even currency?

Interested parties should advertise themselves on LandBuddy, indicating roughly where they want to go on the Google Map app that is part of the free service.

Island buying is sensitive to world events. After 9/11, reports TheTimes of London, there was a rush of Hollywood A-listers snapping up remote islands globally as bug-out locations. Johnny Depp bought the 45-acre Little Hall's Pond Cay in the Bahamas, Leonardo DiCaprio became owner of a 104-acre island with an airstrip in Belize and Mel Gibson took over Mago in the Fijis.

They are not alone - the lure of a private island has Custom hockey jerseysheld a powerful sway over our imaginations in the 150 years since Robert Louis Stevenson wrote Treasure Island. Sharon Stone, Steven Spielberg and Clint Eastwood all own islands.

And for anybody wanting to be among those who need a rowing boat to get to the nearest shop, there are plenty of islands to choose from along Scotland's coastline.

Sanda, off the tip of the Mull of Kintyre, is once again on the market (for offers over 2.75 million euros). And Little Cumbrae, in the Firth of Clyde, could be yours for offers over 2.5 million euros.

Islands off New Zealand #xwere highly prized because, in the worst terror scenario Custom hockey jerseys- bombing of nuclear power stations - the winds come from the South Pole.

Smartphone app botnet experiment blows up a storm

Smartphone app botnet experiment blows up a storm Smartphone app botnet experiment blows up a storm Security researchers fooled nearly 8,000 iPhone and Android userschristmas decoration into joining a mobile smartphone "botnet" #xunder the guise of installing an apparently innocuous weather app.

Derek Brown and Daniel Tijerina of TippingPoint's Digital Vaccine Group carried out the exercise in the run-up to a presentation at last week's RSA Conference as an illustration of how easily social engineering tricks developed on the web and with PCs might be applied to internet-enabled smartphones. The duo's WeatherFist app obtained users' GPS coordinates and telephone numbers before providing local weather forecasts.

The application was not published on either the official iPhone or Android application storeschristmas decoration, but still attracted hundreds of takers of (presumably jailbroken) iPhones and other smartphones via third party app marketplaces, such as Cydia and SlideME (app T&Cs via Google cache here).

The researchers said they have created - but not distributed - a malicious version of the app capable of harvesting data, posting fake updates on social networking sites and sending spam.

The experiment received positive write-ups by New Scientist and Dark Reading. However other security firms have questioned the value of the exercise. Sophos,Pearl earrings, for example, argues that the faux malware created by the ethical hackers does nothing not already attempted by the real-life cybercrooks behind the Duh worm#x, which christmas decorationspread on jailbroken iPhones in the Netherlands last November. ?

"Personal" study shows gene maps can spot disease

"Personal" study shows gene maps can spot disease "Personal" study shows gene maps can spot disease (Reuters) - Two studies published on Wednesday show Potpourriit is possible to sequence the entire gene maps of families with inherited diseases and pinpoint the offending bit of DNA#x.

The studies, which would not have been possible a year or two ago,Carbon fiber hood, are the first real delivery of the promised transformation of medical science from the Human Genome Project's mapping of the human genetic code.

One was also made possible by some of the $5 billion that U.S. President Barack Obama directed to the National Institutes of Health in September from the $787 billion economic stimulus package.

And in that study, the genetic researcher was himself one of the patients.

Dr. James Lupski of the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston Potpourrihas a recessive genetic disease called Charcot-Marie-Tooth syndrome. It affects the nerves stretching from the spinal cord to the arms, legs and feet.

Lupski has been experimenting on himself and his own family for years.

"We tried every other method for 25 years to find out which mutation was important," he said in a telephone interview.

"With this methodology we were able to do it. This is the first time whole genome sequencing has applied to actually find the cause of a disease."

Lupski had been taking blood samples from his grandparents, parents and siblings for years. He got close but the research was considered too risky for funding by the National Institutes of Health.

"He was only able to complete this study because of the stimulus money that we got," said Dr. Story Landis#x, director of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.

Her institute designated Lupski's project for Potpourriabout half a million dollars of the money that Obama directed to the NIH.

GDC: Abusing Your Players For Fun (And Profit?)

GDC: Abusing Your Players For Fun (And Profit?) GDC: Abusing Your Players For Fun (And Profit?) It's probably a good sign when a presentation opens by informing attendeesPVC Tarpaulin that it may kill them if they're prone to seizures. Much like his games, Jonatan "Cactus" S?derstr?m's GDC #xtalk was filled with flashing lights, garish colors, clips from David Lynch movies, and the feeling that somebody is having a joke at our expense. It's a good joke, though, even if he didn't follow up his awkward, adorably nervous foreigner act with a superb Elvis Impersonation. Mostly on account of the fact that he actually is an adorable, awkwardly nervous foreigner, but I was still waiting for it. Anyway, aside from the bizarrity and weird movie summaries ("Dr. Strangelove is actually my favorite comedy of all time... or something. You don't have to laugh at it, though.") he actually namedropped a lot of games that are thematically linked through their incomprehensibility and enjoyable bastardry.

First, and most obviously, I should point out Cactus's own oeuvrePVC Tarpaulin. From today's introduction: "Cactus is kind of like a firehouse, except insead of water he sprays games." He's got a crapload of stuff on his site. It's occasionally brilliant and always just plain weird as hell, but particular attention should be drawn to first-person crazyfest Mondo Medicals, as well as Cactus Arcade, which gathers together all his most notable contributions to the science of making people ask what the fuck is going on.

Messhoff got his props, particularly for Randy Balma: Municipal Abortionist, which clearly follows in the Lynchian tradition. Or, as Cactus said "I think that might not make much sense, but it's good to have a look at it." I think it made me throw up a few times. Not because it's gross or anything, but because it was spinning around and flashing a lot. Also, google优化, it was full of babies#x. They have PVC Tarpaulinthat effect on me. Check out Punishment and Flywrench while you're there.
