(Reuters) - Archbishop Desmond Tutu has done it. So has genome pioneer Craig Venter.
And now American film actress Glenn Close#x has joinedPrinting a handful of celebrities to have their genome sequenced in the name of science.
Close, who stars in the FX television series "Damages" and is known for movie roles including "Fatal Attraction" and "Dangerous Liaisons," said the offer was too good to pass up.
"For me, anything that can move the science forward is worthwhile," Close said in a telephone interview. "It's pretty well publicized that I have mental health issues in my family."
Close, whose family illnesses include bipolar disorder and schizophrenia,Construction Equipment, Printingis a founder of the nonprofit group BringChange2Mind, which raises awareness about mental illness.
New sequencing technologies through companies like Illumina of San Diego, which did Close's genome, have vastly reduced the cost of producing an entire map of the human genome -- essentially the genetic recipe that makes up an individual.
Whereas the first human genome cost $3 billion and took more than a decade to produce, Illumina charges $48,000 for the kind of sequencing Close got. The company would not say whether it charged her.
Scientists say even newer technology will bring the price down to $1,000 within five years, essentially less than the cost of an advanced type of X-ray called a CT scan.

The private interests said that much of their work -- what amount to no-bid grants secured through Congress -- was unfairly being lumped in with earmarks that were obtained through well-timed donations to key lawmakers.
"I understand what the debate is about. But I think that, as Congress reviews the policy on appropriations, there's an opportunity to differentiate those like ours,samurai swords, which are looking for a win-win use of taxpayer dollars," said Benson P. Lee, president and chief executive of Technology Management in Cleveland. His company received a $500,000 earmark to commercialize a biofuel system.
But such firms face a different political environment now. A day after House Democrats announced Security barriersan end to giving earmarks to any private company, House Republicans said Thursday that their entire 178-member conference will not seek any congressional earmarks this year, swearing off even those for nonprofits and municipal authorities in lawmakers' districts.
Calling the earmark process "a symbol of a broken Washington," House Minority Leader John A. Boehner (Ohio) said the Republican move is a key step in demonstrating fiscal restraint, even if it does not lead to a reduction in federal spending.
"Republicans took an important step toward showing the American people we're serious about reform by adopting an immediate, unilateral ban on all earmarks. But the more difficult battle lies ahead, and that's stopping the spending spree in Washington that is saddling our *****ren and grand*****ren with trillions of dollars in debt," Boehner said.
Earmarks are inserted into the dozen annual bills that fund the federal government, to the tune of about $16 billion a year -- a small slice of the more than $1 trillion in discretionary spending that Congress approves each year. While curbing earmarks will do little to reduce the massive federal deficit, leaders of both parties have declared that the process has too often rewarded those who hire the best lobbyists#x and who make Security barrierswell-timed political donations to senior lawmakers.

And the cost to perform such feats has come way down, with experts at one company predicting that genomes could one day be sequenced for as low as $5,000. Right now, the cost hovers closer to $50,000.
"When it gets to the point where it would cost less to sequence the genome using these techniques than it does to send off a sample to test for a few genes, then you can start moving medicine from just seeing people who are sick to trying to prevent people from getting sick," said Dr. Jeffery Vance, director of the Center for Genomic Medicine at the Hussman Institute for Human Genomics, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. "You can see where things are going. This is showing that it's practical, it can be done and that medicine will start slowly to move toward using this technique as a diagnostic technique for all these individuals and families who have what looks like an inherited disease but not a big family history."
And, Vance pointed out, #xgenes don't change like cholesterol and blood pressure do. Textile fabricThese tests would only have to be performed once.

“All the films are by, for and about women,” said Claire Snyder, graduate assistant in the Marshall’s Women’s Center. “The festival will showcase women and the arts and their creativity.”

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Omega 3 SoftgelsMissouri selected a company Monday to develop a database for tracking purchases of cold medicine #xthat can be used to make methamphetamine.
Since 2005, Missouri has kept a paper log that law officers can check later to track purchases of cold medications containing pseudoephedrine. A 2008 law required the development of electronic logs allowing real-time monitoring, but plans to expand the tracking system stalled because it was not funded.
Appriss Inc., a technology company based in Louisville, Ky., was selected to develop the new electronic monitoring system. Appriss already operates a system that links 18,000 pharmacies in nearby states.
Gov. Jay Nixon said Monday that pharmaceutical companies have agreed to pay for developing and operating the new database. Omega 3 SoftgelsNixon, a Democrat, said real-time tracking of cold medication purchases would help law officers and ensure Missourians can buy medicine needed for legitimate purposes.
People who are rejected when trying to buy cold medication would receive a receipt with Appriss' phone number and instructions to call the company for an explanation. The new system would be designed to spot fake identification, to flag multiple people buying medicine and reporting the same address and other suspicious activity.#x
The drug companies-funded database comes as several Missouri lawmakers have proposed requiring a doctor's prescription before someone could buy cold medications that contain pseudoephedrine such as Sudafed, Claritin-D and Aleve Cold & Sinus.
For the ninth straight year in 2009, Missouri had the most meth lab incidents in the nation. Incidents include includes meth lab busts but also any documented evidence of meth-making.
"Meth consumption continues to be a problem that devastates families and even whole communities in Missouri," Nixon said. "This database will be another important step toward cutting off meth makers at the source."
Appriss was selected to develop the tracking system by a committee that represented health officials, pharmacies, law officers and prosecutors.
Oregon blocked the sale of the pseudoephedrine-based medicines without a prescription through a law that took effect in 2006. In 2005,Buy in Global, there were 141 meth lab incidents in Oregon, and in 2009, there were nine through late October.#x
Some Missouri cities have acted on their own and now require prescriptions for those cold medications.
