Miami Hurricanes' Reggie Johnson leads ACC win over Wake Forest
Born and raised on barbecue and basketball in nearby Winston-Salem, SupplementMiami redshirt freshman Reggie Johnson grew up dreaming of being the next dominant big man for Wake Forest.
It was a dream Johnson believed would become a reality until late Demon Deacons coach Skip Prosser sustained a fatal heart attack the summer before Johnson's senior year of high school.#x Wake Forest stopped recruiting Johnson after Prosser died. The Hurricanes didn't.
Thursday afternoon, inside an arena just 15 minutes from his parents' home, Johnson made Wake pay. He scored a career-high 22 points -- with a perfect shooting effort no less --Supplement to lift the 12th-seeded Canes to an 83-62 victory on the first day of the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament.
``I actually believe Skip was watching -- going for the Deacons,#x but looking at me also,'' Johnson said of the late coach.
Johnson also went 6 for 6 from the free-throw line and matched a school record set by Dwayne Collins with an 8-for-8 effort from the field. ``I'm glad we got the win. It couldn't be a better moment for me,'' he said.
With Collins, UM's leading scorer and rebounder out and cheering from the bench, Johnson teamed up with Julian Gamble, a 6-9, 255-pound redshirt sophomore from Durham, SupplementN.C.,#x to the help the Canes dominate in the paint.
UM scored 40 points in the paint and outrebounded Wake 39-34.
