What's Next For Mo'Nique?
At the 79th Annual Academy Awards held in 2007, Diamond toolscomedians Will Ferrell and Jack Black performed a musical number that explored a tragic truth — "A comedian at the Oscars is the saddest man of all/ Your movies may make millions,#x but your name they'll never call." But at this year's Oscars, the hilarious duo's sentiment was proven wrong when stand-up comedian Mo'Nique won Best Supporting Actress for her decidedly dramatic turn as an abusive mother in "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire."
As the highly coveted golden statuette joins the many other trophies earned for Mo'Nique's "Precious" performance, many are wondering what the future holds next for the award-winning actress. While a continued career on the big screen is undoubtedly in the cards, Mo'Nique's next endeavor will take her away from movie theaters and back to her roots in stand-up.
Later this month, Mo'Nique embarks on a comedy tour titled Spread the Love. The cross-country show launches on March 19 at the Kiefer UNO Lakefront Arena in New Orleans and ends on May 22 in Bridgeport,#x Connecticut's Arena at Harbor Yard, hitting a total of 20 cities along the way.
"On this tour people can expect the kind of laughter that makes the bottom of their stomach hurt,"Diamond tools Mo'Nique said in a statement. "And the type of love you'll never forget."
In addition to Spread the Love, Mo'Nique is a participant in "Shaquille O'Neal Presents: All-Star Comedy Jam," a special airing on Showtime later this year.
Some might see Mo'Nique's return to stand-up so quickly after her Oscar victory as a curious career move, but the award winner has repeatedly insisted that comedy is her passion. "Stand-up is my first baby," she said in an interview with The Associated Press. "Like, I'll be doing stand-up, sugar,samurai swords, when I'm like 97 years old. I hope to God I can still make it happen."
As for her cinematic career, Mo'Nique has not officially revealed plans at the moment. Given the Oscar winner's sufficiently busy schedule on the comedy circuit through the end of May, however, Diamond tools#xshe hardly needs to rush her next big-screen endeavor.
