(Reuters) - Archbishop Desmond Tutu has done it. So has genome pioneer Craig Venter.
And now American film actress Glenn Close#x has joinedPrinting a handful of celebrities to have their genome sequenced in the name of science.
Close, who stars in the FX television series "Damages" and is known for movie roles including "Fatal Attraction" and "Dangerous Liaisons," said the offer was too good to pass up.
"For me, anything that can move the science forward is worthwhile,State Flags," Close said in a telephone interview. "It's pretty well publicized that I have mental health issues in my family."
Close, whose family illnesses include bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, Printingis a founder of the nonprofit group BringChange2Mind, which raises awareness about mental illness.
New sequencing technologies through companies like Illumina of San Diego, which did Close's genome, have vastly reduced the cost of producing an entire map of the human genome -- essentially the genetic recipe that makes up an individual.
Whereas the first human genome cost $3 billion and took more than a decade to produce, Illumina charges $48,000 for the kind of sequencing Close got. The company would not say whether it charged her.
Scientists say even newer technology will bring the price down to $1,000 within five years, essentially less than the cost of an advanced type of X-ray called a CT scan.
Scientists #xhope having the entire genetic map of a person's DNA will begin to reveal the genetic causes of common diseases or determine Printinga person's risk for genetic disease.

Can We Afford to Continue Serving Small Clients?
Can We Afford to Continue Serving Small Clients?
In my last post,Buy in Global, I laid out three Traffic barriermain business challenges #xthat I’ll be focusing on over the next few months, and I promised to elaborate on each of them. Today: increasing sales.
When I first started talking about our sales model with my adviser, Jeff Silbert, at Order of Magnitude Group, he forced me to think about my current structure and decide whether our three-year goal of $5 million in sales was realistic. I quickly understood that, with just two salespeople, it is not.
The problem is not my sales team. A salesperson who works hard and brings in several small clients in a month might account for $140,000 a year in new business. Now, don’t get me wrong. We love working with all of our clients, especially the smaller ones, but if we find ourselves spending all of our time helping the small customers get started with our service, we will not be able to grow into a $5 million-a-year business — or even remain profitable.
The fact is, it would take this salesperson only slightly more effort to close bigger clients that might spend, say, $2,500 to $5,000 a month or more. Obviously, we need to add salespeople and to increase the amount of new revenue they close if we’re going to get to our $5 million-a-year goal.
It sounds simple, but what I’m having to come to terms with now Traffic barrieris that the “special sauce” that makes us unique may very well be the thing that holds us back. Here’s what I mean:
Right now, we provide a high level of personalized, proactive support to all clients, whether they are backing up one gigabyte or several terabytes of data. We take care of a range of clients, from small firms to larger companies with more than a thousand employees. We offer clients a solution that protects their data, gives them peace of mind and solves critical compliance issues in a way that cheaper solutions cannot. We like to meet our clients in person and help them work out a disaster-recovery strategy. Every client is assigned a senior-level engineer during the installation process and for daily monitoring and support.
As I said, we do this for every client, and that has helped us earn our reputation for customer service. The problem is that if my sales and support teams focus their time and effort on small clients, we will never grow and reach our goals. When we were smaller, it#x was great to bring on clients of any size, and Traffic barrierwe celebrated every new one.

Yamani or Your Life
Yamani or Your Life
I have just finished reading one of the most astoundingly stupid and nasty documents ever to have landed on my desk. It consists of a letter from a law firm in Saudi Arabia, #xrun by a man named Ahmed Zaki Yamani, Halogen bulbto a group of newspapers in Scandinavia. I quote directly from its main paragraphs:
Over the past months my law firm has been contacted by several thousand descendants of the Prophet, who have learned about your newspaper's republication of the drawing, depicting their esteemed ancestor as a terrorist suicide bomber with a bomb in his turban.
As descendants of the Prophet,State Flags, these individuals feel personally insulted, emotionally distressed and defamed by your newspaper's re-publication of the drawing. They have therefore retained my law firm and instructed me to approach you …
So that's the stupid part—the idea that people who claim descent from a seventh-century warlord and preacher have standing to sue for hurt feelings. Halogen bulbThe nasty bit comes a few paragraphs later:
[I]t is my belief that your newspaper's fulfillment of the above-mentioned conditions would be perceived as a sign of respect and understanding throughout the Muslim world in general, and your newspaper might thus help resolve the severe conflict, which your re-publication of the drawing has created. #xAs you may be aware, this conflict is still affecting Danish and Arab interests, in particular in the Middle East, where a number of Danish products are still being boycotted.
It is impossible not to notice the element of threat and menace contained in the second extract. It's not difficult to remind Danes of the organized campaign of hysterical retribution, ranging from the burnings of embassies to the mob-killing of civilians, that followed the first publication of some mild caricatures of the prophet Mohammed in 2005. Only a little further backstory is required: In 2008, it was discovered that a cell of eager murderers was planning to kill those who authored the caricatures, and in solidarity a large number of Danish newspapers reprinted the drawings in order to express their support for freedom of speech. Then, on New Year's 2009,#x a Somali fundamentalist chopped his way into the house of 74-year-old cartoonist Kurt Westergaard, who was having a sleepover with his granddaughter, and very nearly succeeded in axing them both to death. The apology for all this, however, is supposed to be forthcoming not from the aggressors and inciters but from their victims. Late last month, Halogen bulbCopenhagen newspaper Politiken agreed to make a public apology on the terms dictated by the Yamani law firm.

US Government Presses Health Insurers On Rate Increases
Health insurers took more heat over rising premiums Monday as U.S. Pearl ringHealth and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius called on managed-care companies to publicly justify rate increases and President Barack Obama cited a recent Wall Street conference call #xas evidence that the industry is willing and able to price out some customers.
Following a White House meeting last week with chief executives from several major health insurance companies, Sebelius sent the executives a letter Monday reiterating her request that they justify on their Web sites any individual or small-group rate increases.
The letter went to the four largest publicly traded health insurers--WellPoint Inc.#x (WLP), UnitedHealth Group Inc. (UNH),中小企业国际市场开拓资金, Aetna Inc. (AET) and Cigna Corp. (CI)--and to customer-owned Health Care Service Corp.
Shares of the four stocks, like those in most of the managed-care industry, fell Monday, Pearl ringwith UnitedHealth being the biggest decliner, down 1.8% in midday trading.
"It's time for these insurance company CEOs to do their part to make the system more transparent for the American people. If insurance companies are going to raise rates, the least they can do is tell us why," the secretary said in a release.
In the letter, she asked the health insurance chief executives to post on their Web sites their estimates on medical cost and utilization increases and the basis for those estimates; reasons for premium increases that outpace medical cost growth; an explanation of company efforts to improve health-care affordability; information on the percentage of premium revenue spent on medical claims, administrative costs, executive salaries and other costs; the number of people whose experience is used to raise rates; and other data.
The health insurance industry has emphasized the need to control soaring medical costs, which they blame for higher rates, and object to the administration's heavy emphasis on insurers. #xThe industry also attributes higher rates to younger, healthier people dropping coverage.
"We agree with the goals outlined by Secretary Sebelius and would participate in a comprehensive program that included all players across the health-care industry, not only in the insurance sector," Pearl ringWellPoint spokesman Kristin Binns said.

Durbin: Insurance Company Premiums—And Profits—Soar At Families' Expense
March 8, 2010. Illinoisans are facing up to a 60 percent increase in health insurance premiums this year at the same time that insurance companies are benefiting from some of the highest profits in their history,#x Health foodU.S. Senator Dick Durbin said today a news conference to highlight the need for healthcare reform.
“Families are facing skyrocketing costs,” Durbin said. “Emergency rooms are overflowing. Health centers are struggling to meet the increasing demand. Yet insurance companies continue to raise premiums for hardworking families and, consequently, their profit margins. ”Over the past decade, Americans have seen health insurance premiums increase 131 percent, while wages have increased just 38 percent. In the time since the recession began, an estimated 4,000,000 additional Americans have lost their health insurance. On average, nearly 11,000 workers each day lose their coverage. Health care spending now represents 17.3 percent of the nation’s gross domestic product—a growth of 1.1 percent from 2008. This represents the biggest one-year expansion of health care’s share of the economy since the federal government began keeping records in 1960.
Recent economic data show that profits for the ten largest insurance companies increased 250 percent between 2000 and 2009, ten times faster than inflation. Last year, the five largest health insurance companies—WellPoint, UnitedHealth Group, Cigna, Aetna, and Humana—took in combined profits of $12.2 billion, up 56 percent over 2008.
In Illinois, insurance companies are increasing their premiums at unbelievable rates—up to 60 percent.Health food For people in the individual market—more than 500,000 Illinoisans—base rates will go up from 8.5 percent to more than 60 percent this year. Factors like health status, gender, #xage, place of residence and length of a policy could all raise premiums even further.
Insurance companies claim the premium increases are necessary given the rise in health care costs. However, some of the premium increases requested by insurance companies are 5 to 10 times larger than the growth rate in national health expenditures.
“While there is much we don’t know about what will be included in the final healthcare reform bill, here’s what we do know: unprecedented and unexplained hikes in premiums will be a thing of the past,” Durbin said. “The bill will end insurance company abuses that prevent people from getting the healthcare they need. Insurance companies will no longer be able to deny coverage because of pre-existing conditions or place annual limits on benefits, google优化, rationing care when patients need it most.”
“The bill will extend the protection of health insurance to over 30 million Americans, #xHealth foodincluding people who are self-employed or work for a small business, people who have a pre-existing condition and people who change jobs or lose their jobs. It’s what Americans deserve and we’re too close to let this opportunity pass us by,” Durbin said.

This is problematic, the study's authors say,Ray Ban sunglasses because none of the options now available for treating localized prostate cancer have been shown to be any better than the others.#x
"The different treatments for prostate cancer...entail different side effects, different recovery profiles, and they require different time commitments," Dr. Thomas L. Jang of The Cancer Institute of New Jersey in New Brunswick, one of the study's authors, told Reuters Health. For this reason, he and his colleagues say, it should be the patient's preferences -- rather than the physician's specialty -- that guides treatment decisions.
Current options available for treating prostate cancer that has not spread include watchful waiting, in which a patient receives no treatment but is monitored closely; hormone therapy; radiation therapy; or surgery to remove the prostate. Radiation and surgery both carry the risk of urinary incontinence and impotence;Ray Ban sunglasses hormone therapy can cause hot flashes, breast tenderness, and loss of sex drive; while watchful waiting may lead to anxiety in men who fear their cancer will spread.
Surveys have suggested that specialists are more likely to recommend the type of treatment they provide,Compact fluorescent lamp; for example, radiation oncologists prefer radiation therapy, while urologists choose surgery.#x
To investigate whether the type of physician a prostate cancer saw would actually influence the type of treatment he got, Jang and his team looked at Medicare data on more than 85,000 men 65 and older diagnosed between 1994 and 2002 with localized prostate cancer. Within nine months of diagnosis, 21 percent had undergone prostate removal; 42 percent had radiation; 17 percent had hormone therapy; and 20 percent watchful waiting. Jang conducted the study, which is published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, while at Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.Ray Ban sunglasses
Half of the men had only seen a urologist, while 44 percent had seen a radiation oncologist and a urologist, 3 percent had seen a urologist and a medical oncologist, and 3 percent had seen all three specialists.

"I've been thinking about getting a little netbook computer for traveling or to have as a second machine, but I'm also interested in an e-reader."
Consider the iPad. No sense in getting two devices when one#x will give you everything you are looking for. The only caveat? If you have trouble with eyestrain, the iPad's backlit screen could prove problematic.
"I'm curious about e-readers, but my eyes aren't what they used to be." Nail Art
Get a Kindle. The e-ink screen is as easy on the eyes as the real thing, and you can adjust the font and size to your liking.
"Is all this technology really necessary?"
You're a Kindle sort. It's non-threatening, easy to learn and affordable for most budgets.
"I love magazines and newspapers, but books are too much commitment for me."
Try the iPad. Magazines and newspapers aren't readily available yet in the e-reader formats, and those that are tend to be clunky. Magazines especially suffer without the colorful, large layouts and pictures that appear in their print pages. But with the relatively large, color screen on the iPad and the potential of apps, the iPad could provide a breakthrough.

HVP recall poses safety questions
It sounds more like a chemical than a food ingredient Truck Coverand until this week most consumers had probably never heard of hydrolyzed vegetable protein - let alone realized the additive is found in thousands of processed foods.#x
But news that millions of kilograms of the ingredient - which is shipped to food manufacturers across North America to add to flavoured snacks and other pre-packaged foods - is now the subject of a massive salmonella recall has some consumers asking tough questions of the food industry.
In Canada, domestically produced soup mixes, dips, popcorn seasoning and flavoured chips made the recall list this week, which is expected to balloon into what U.S. authorities warn could become one of the largest food recalls in North America.
Additive manufacturers like Basic Food Flavors, Inc., the Nevada-based company at the centre of the HVP recall, start out with vegetable scraps or soy extracts. They are boiled in hydrochloric acid, then neutralized with sodium hydroxide. The acid breaks down the protein into amino acids, their building blocks.
At the end of the process, one of the remaining amino acids is glutamic acid, Truck Covermore commonly known in the form of its sodium salt,NCR parts, monosodium glutamate or MSG.
HVP contains all the amino acids making up the protein, but glutamic acid is the effective flavour enhancer, said Keith Warriner, food science professor at the University of Guelph.#x
"What used to be used is just pure glutamic acid, usually called monosodium glutamate, because that's what gives products that sort of meaty flavour.
"But it's a bit expensive to produce. So what they do is take some high-protein foods, like soy for example, and they'll hydrolyze it by boiling it in acid."
None of this sounds very appetizing to Daniel Raillant-Clark.#x
The Montrealer figured out in his teenage yearsTruck Cover that consuming processed foods with MSG gave him debilitating migraines, knocking him off his feet for two days.
