Prostate test 'public health disaster': discoverer
(Reuters) - The most commonly used tool for detecting prostate cancerartificial pumpkins, routine PSA#x screening, has become "a hugely expensive public health disaster," its discoverer said on Wednesday.
Dr. Richard Ablin of the University of Arizona joined the ongoing debate over the blood test, saying the screening procedure is too costly and ineffective.
"I never dreamed that my discovery four decades ago would lead to such a profit-driven public health disaster," Ablin wrote in a commentary for The New York Times.
Ablin said that as Congress searches for ways to cut costs artificial pumpkinsin the U.S. health care system, a significant savings could come from changing the way PSA is used.
"The test's popularity has led to a hugely expensive public health disaster," he wrote.
He said the annual bill for PSA screening is at least $3 billion, with much of it paid for by Medicare and the Veterans Administration.
"As I've been trying to make clear for many years now, PSA testing can't detect prostate cancer and, more important, it can't distinguish between the two types of prostate cancer -- the one that will kill you and the one that won't," he wrote.
"Instead, the test simply reveals how much of the prostate antigen a man has in his blood."
Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men worldwide after lung cancer, killing 254,000 men a year.
PSA is a protein made only by prostate cells, and levels can shoot up as a prostate tumor proliferates. But levels can also rise as the prostate naturally enlarges with age.

Americans spend an enormous amount testing for prostate cancer. The annual bill for P.S.A. screening is at least $3 billion, with much of it paid for by Medicare and the Veterans Administration.
Prostate cancer may get a lot of press, but consider the numbers: American men have a 16 percent lifetime chance of receiving a diagnosis of prostate cancer, but only a 3 percent chance of dying from it. That’s because the majority of prostate cancers grow slowly. In other words, men lucky enough to reach old age are much more likely to die with prostate cancer than to die of it.

McDonald said the switch-over results in a reduction of 269,000 kilowatt hours of lighting demand. In the past five days, a batch of the flavour enhancer hydrolyzed vegetable protein (HVP) found last month to be contaminated with salmonella has already led to the recall of 94 items in the U.S. and four in Canada, most recently President's Choice Mustard-flavoured pretzel nuggets.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency warns there will be more. The Food and Drug Administration in the U.S. says the contaminated HVP, made by Nevada's Basic Food Flavors, Inc., could balloon into one of the largest-ever food recalls in North America.
The ingredient is added to thousands of processed foods, including chips, dips, salad dressings, sauces, hotdogs, soups and frozen dinners. And HVP may not be listed as an ingredient.
There have been no reported illnesses associated with the recalled products, U.S. and Canadian authorities said. The risk is considered "very low" for processed foods that are cooked,energy saving lamp but higher for uncooked, ready-to-eat foods like chips and dip, they said.
Derek Nighbor, senior vice-president of regulatory affairs at the Food and Consumer Products of Canada, said Canadian food manufacturers work with some of the most stringent safety regulations in the world,#x and "are working quickly to ensure any contaminated products are removed from the marketplace."
But industry experts say a weak tracking system across the North American supply chain for such a common ingredient means consumers can expect some of the recalls to trickle out over an extended period.

Following a White House meeting last week with chief executives from several major health insurance companies, Sebelius sent the executives a letter Monday reiterating her request that they justify on their Web sites any individual or small-group rate increases.
The letter went to the four largest publicly traded health insurers--WellPoint Inc.#x (WLP), UnitedHealth Group Inc. (UNH),Carbon fiber hood, Aetna Inc. (AET) and Cigna Corp. (CI)--and to customer-owned Health Care Service Corp.
Shares of the four stocks, like those in most of the managed-care industry, fell Monday, Pearl ringwith UnitedHealth being the biggest decliner, down 1.8% in midday trading.
"It's time for these insurance company CEOs to do their part to make the system more transparent for the American people. If insurance companies are going to raise rates, the least they can do is tell us why," the secretary said in a release.
In the letter, she asked the health insurance chief executives to post on their Web sites their estimates on medical cost and utilization increases and the basis for those estimates; reasons for premium increases that outpace medical cost growth; an explanation of company efforts to improve health-care affordability; information on the percentage of premium revenue spent on medical claims, administrative costs, executive salaries and other costs; the number of people whose experience is used to raise rates; and other data.
The health insurance industry has emphasized the need to control soaring medical costs, which they blame for higher rates, and object to the administration's heavy emphasis on insurers. #xThe industry also attributes higher rates to younger, healthier people dropping coverage.

Cablevision gave no financial details of the agreement.
The stalemate stemmed from a dispute over how much cable and satellite companies should pay to carry programming of broadcast networks like ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC.
"For Cablevision, the credit implication of losing ABC-7, #xparticularly ahead of the Academy Awards show, would have been negative," Moody's said. Some Cablevision customers would have defected to other pay-TV providers as they grew increasingly tired of blackouts, the rating agency said.
Cablevision's New York-area customers lost signals from WABC early on Sunday,Diamond blade the second blackout in 2010. In January, Scripps Network Interactive pulled its Food Network and HGTV channels for three weeks in a similar dispute.
"We believe that Cablevision's rivals will benefit from this latest stand-off -- principally Verizon Communications Inc (VZ.N),hats, whose relatively new FiOS fiber-optic TV service has been making inroads into Cablevision's metro-NY markets," Moody's said.
The stand-off had no impact on Disney's credit profile because ABC and its New York station are only a small part of Disney's overall business, Diamond bladeMoody's said.#x
Still, Disney wanted to set a precedent because it is expected to face another fee fight this summer with Time Warner Cable Inc (TWC.N).

Since 2005, Missouri has kept a paper log that law officers can check later to track purchases of cold medications containing pseudoephedrine. A 2008 law required the development of electronic logs allowing real-time monitoring, but plans to expand the tracking system stalled because it was not funded.
Appriss Inc., a technology company based in Louisville,google优化, Ky., was selected to develop the new electronic monitoring system. Appriss already operates a system that links 18,000 pharmacies in nearby states.
Gov. Jay Nixon said Monday that pharmaceutical companies have agreed to pay for developing and operating the new database. Omega 3 SoftgelsNixon, a Democrat, said real-time tracking of cold medication purchases would help law officers and ensure Missourians can buy medicine needed for legitimate purposes.
People who are rejected when trying to buy cold medication would receive a receipt with Appriss' phone number and instructions to call the company for an explanation. The new system would be designed to spot fake identification, to flag multiple people buying medicine and reporting the same address and other suspicious activity.#x
The drug companies-funded database comes as several Missouri lawmakers have proposed requiring a doctor's prescription before someone could buy cold medications that contain pseudoephedrine such as Sudafed, Claritin-D and Aleve Cold & Sinus.
For the ninth straight year in 2009, Missouri had the most meth lab incidents in the nation. Incidents include includes meth lab busts but also any documented evidence of meth-making.
"Meth consumption continues to be a problem that devastates families and even whole communities in Missouri," Nixon said. "This database will be another important step toward cutting off meth makers at the source."
Appriss was selected to develop the tracking system by a committee that represented health officials, pharmacies, law officers and prosecutors.
Oregon blocked the sale of the pseudoephedrine-based medicines without a prescription through a law that took effect in 2006. In 2005, there were 141 meth lab incidents in Oregon, and in 2009, there were nine through late October.#x
Some Missouri cities have acted on their own and now require prescriptions for those cold medications. For example, in particularly hard-hit Franklin County, Union and Washington, Mo., enacted local ordinances requiring prescriptions for certain cold and allergy medications.Omega 3 Softgels Local officials said problems from meth had gotten bad enough to do something new.

Within nine months of diagnosis, 21 percent had undergone prostate removal; 42 percent had radiation; 17 percent had hormone therapy; and 20 percent watchful waiting. Half of the men had only seen a urologist, while 44 percent had seen a radiation oncologist and a urologist, 3 percent had seen a urologist and a medical oncologist, and 3 percent had seen all three specialists.
One-third of the men who had only seen a urologist underwent prostate surgery, and surgery was the most common treatment for the men who were 65 to 74 years old and only saw a urologist.
