Prostate test 'public health disaster': discoverer Prostate test 'public health disaster': discoverer (Reuters) - The most commonly used tool for detecting prostate cancerartificial pumpkins, routine PSA#x screening, has become "a hugely expensive public health disaster," its discoverer said on Wednesday.

Dr. Richard Ablin of the University of Arizona joined the ongoing debate over the blood test, saying the screening procedure is too costly and ineffective.

"I never dreamed that my discovery four decades ago would lead to such a profit-driven public health disaster," Ablin wrote in a commentary for The New York Times.

Ablin said that as Congress searches for ways to cut costs artificial pumpkinsin the U.S. health care system, a significant savings could come from changing the way PSA is used.

"The test's popularity has led to a hugely expensive public health disaster," he wrote.

He said the annual bill for PSA screening is at least $3 billion, with much of it paid for by Medicare and the Veterans Administration.

"As I've been trying to make clear for many years now, PSA testing can't detect prostate cancer and, more important, it can't distinguish between the two types of prostate cancer -- the one that will kill you and the one that won't," he wrote.

"Instead, the test simply reveals how much of the prostate antigen a man has in his blood."

Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men worldwide after lung cancer, killing 254,000 men a year.

PSA is a protein made only by prostate cells, and levels can shoot up as a prostate tumor proliferates. But levels can also rise as the prostate naturally enlarges with age.

Micro-Retro 4: Milton Bradley Microvision

Micro-Retro 4: Milton Bradley Microvision Micro-Retro 4: Milton Bradley Microvision Let’s turn back the clock all the way to the first Waterproof tarphandheld game system with interchangeable cartridges. Nope, that one’s too recent!#x Rewind ten years before the GameBoy and you’ll come to Milton Bradley’s Microvision, an ambitious, nearly pocked-sized console which first debuted in 1979. This machine laid the groundwork for future portable game systems, relying on a battery as its power source and featuring its own LCD display. The Microvision also had a dynamic control scheme, with a dial and up to twelve buttons on the face of the unit. Each game doubled as a system overlay that determined the number of buttons the player could access, along with the function of each.

The Microvision was ahead of its time… perhaps too far ahead of its time, if its construction and the quality of its games are any indication. The technology was bulkier than dedicated handhelds like Nintendo’s Game & Watch series, so kids who wanted to sneak in a few games during class were going to have a heck of a time trying to hide it behind their books. The liquid crystal display was also manufactured in less than ideal conditions, giving the system a short shelf life. While most handhelds from the early 1980s still have sharp, clear images thirty years later, it’s nearly impossible Waterproof tarpto find a Microvision with a screen that hasn’t turned into an inky black mess.

Also, the games were lackluster, to put it kindly. Remember how when the GameBoy first debuted, most of the titles that launched with it were pale imitations of popular franchises on the Nintendo Entertainment System? The same thing happened with the Microvision ten years earlier. Since home video games were already barebones experiences in 1979, they were stripped to the bone marrow when ported to the GameBoy’s prehistoric ancestor.

Take the Microvision pack-in Block Buster,Metal halide lamps, for instance. This Breakout clone gave the player scant few options and just one wall to break in comparison to the more robust Super Breakout, released one year earlier for the Atari 2600. Pinball actually was the same game with just four onscreen targets… the ball would madly bounce between a quartet of bumpers until finally returning to your paddle, making even Video Pinball for the 2600 seem like a faithful simulation by comparison. Star Trek: Phaser Strike was a shooting galley with a crudely drawn cannon firing at shapeless targets. So vague was its design that Milton Bradley#x stripped the game of its license Waterproof tarpwhile changing absolutely nothing else.

The Great Prostate Mistake

The Great Prostate Mistake The Great Prostate Mistake EACH year some 30 million American men undergo testing for prostate-specific antigen, an enzyme made by the prostate. Approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 1994, compact fluorescent lampthe P.S.A. test is the most commonly used tool for detecting prostate cancer.

The test’s popularity has led to a hugely expensive public health disaster. #xIt’s an issue I am painfully familiar with — I discovered P.S.A. in 1970. As Congress searches for ways to cut costs in our health care system, a significant savings could come from changing the way the antigen is used to screen for prostate cancer.

Americans spend an enormous amount testing for prostate cancer. The annual bill for P.S.A. screening is at least $3 billion, with much of it paid for by Medicare and the Veterans Administration.

Prostate cancer may get a lot of press, but consider the numbers: American men have a 16 percent lifetime chance of receiving a diagnosis of prostate cancer, but only a 3 percent chance of dying from it. That’s because the majority of prostate cancers grow slowly. In other words, men lucky enough to reach old age are much more likely to die with prostate cancer than to die of it.

Even then, the test is hardly more effective than a coin toss. compact fluorescent lampAs I’ve been trying to make clear for many years now, P.S.A. testing can’t detect prostate cancer and, more important,#x it can’t distinguish between the two types of prostate cancer — the one that will kill you and the one that won’t.

Instead, the test simply reveals how much of the prostate antigen a man has in his blood. Infections, over-the-counter drugs like ibuprofen,Metal halide lamps, and benign swelling of the prostate can all elevate a man’s P.S.A. levels, but none of these factors signals cancer. Men with low readings might still harbor dangerous cancers, while those with high readings might be completely healthy.

In approving the procedure, the Food and Drug Administration relied heavily on a study that showed testing could detect 3.8 percent of prostate cancers, compact fluorescent lamp which was a better rate than the standard method,#x a digital rectal exam.

What’s the Moral Price for Playing Politics? What’s the Moral Price for Playing Politics? His votes, explained Ashburn, reflected his "duty to represent my constituents," the vast majority of whom,Compact fluorescent lamp, in his opinion, Metal halide bulbwere against various rights for gays. #xLeft unasked and unanswered was the natural follow-up: at what point does catering to a presumably bigoted constituency (particularly by one who belongs to a group that is the object of that bigotry) become not just hypocritical but downright immoral? The question, of course, is not just one for Ashburn, but for politicians everywhere who seek political gain from advocating discrimination.

For most human-rights advocates, the answer is obvious (at that point where bias trumps both logic and compassion), which is one reason a measure before the Ugandan Parliament has been condemned around the world. The proposed law, supposedly designed to protect Ugandan culture, its vulnerable *****ren, and "traditional family values," would harden the country's already tough laws against homosexuality. It sanctions life imprisonment for those who engage in same-sex marriage or for anyone who touches another person with the intention of "committing the act of homosexuality."Metal halide bulb It allows executing those who engage in homosexual acts with certain classes of victims. And it would jail those who encourage or counsel others who engage in homosexuality.

The Ugandan proposal (which few expect to pass in anything like its present form and which, interestingly enough, was undergirded by arguments from certain American evangelicals) is so over the top that no serious thinker believes it to be remotely enforceable.#x Also—according to a brief filed by the London-based Equal Rights Trust—it violates both the Ugandan Constitution and the country's obligations under various international agreements.

Dimitrina Petrova, executive director and founder of Equal Rights Trust, believes the timing of the proposed legislation is suspect. "Homosexuality has been around in African cultures for centuries, as well as in non-African cultures," she told me. "Why now, given that homosexuality is already prohibited?" The answer, she says, is politics. "At this time when Uganda has a number of political problems and insecurities … poverty is horrible,#x security is horrible, Metal halide bulbsexual crime in unaddressed … the focus on the issue of homosexuality is a way of distracting attention from the real problems of the country."

Salmonella recall over tainted additive growing Salmonella recall over tainted additive growing It could take months for food companies to figure out whether a popular flavouring ingredient contaminated with salmonella found its way into their products, energy saving lampindustry experts say.#x

In the past five days, a batch of the flavour enhancer hydrolyzed vegetable protein (HVP) found last month to be contaminated with salmonella has already led to the recall of 94 items in the U.S. and four in Canada, most recently President's Choice Mustard-flavoured pretzel nuggets.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency warns there will be more. The Food and Drug Administration in the U.S. says the contaminated HVP, made by Nevada's Basic Food Flavors, Inc., could balloon into one of the largest-ever food recalls in North America.

The ingredient is added to thousands of processed foods, including chips, dips, salad dressings, sauces, hotdogs, soups and frozen dinners. And HVP may not be listed as an ingredient.

There have been no reported illnesses associated with the recalled products, U.S. and Canadian authorities said. The risk is considered "very low" for processed foods that are cooked, energy saving lamp but higher for uncooked, ready-to-eat foods like chips and dip, they said.

Derek Nighbor, senior vice-president of regulatory affairs at the Food and Consumer Products of Canada, said Canadian food manufacturers work with some of the most stringent safety regulations in the world,#x and "are working quickly to ensure any contaminated products are removed from the marketplace."

But industry experts say a weak tracking system across the North American supply chain for such a common ingredient means consumers can expect some of the recalls to trickle out over an extended period.

US Government Presses Health Insurers On Rate Increases US Government Presses Health Insurers On Rate Increases Health insurers took more heat over rising premiums Monday as U.S. Pearl ringHealth and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius called on managed-care companies to publicly justify rate increases and President Barack Obama cited a recent Wall Street conference call #xas evidence that the industry is willing and able to price out some customers.

Following a White House meeting last week with chief executives from several major health insurance companies, Sebelius sent the executives a letter Monday reiterating her request that they justify on their Web sites any individual or small-group rate increases.

The letter went to the four largest publicly traded health insurers--WellPoint Inc.#x (WLP), UnitedHealth Group Inc. (UNH),Carbon fiber hood, Aetna Inc. (AET) and Cigna Corp. (CI)--and to customer-owned Health Care Service Corp.

Shares of the four stocks, like those in most of the managed-care industry, fell Monday, Pearl ringwith UnitedHealth being the biggest decliner, down 1.8% in midday trading.

"It's time for these insurance company CEOs to do their part to make the system more transparent for the American people. If insurance companies are going to raise rates, the least they can do is tell us why," the secretary said in a release.

In the letter, she asked the health insurance chief executives to post on their Web sites their estimates on medical cost and utilization increases and the basis for those estimates; reasons for premium increases that outpace medical cost growth; an explanation of company efforts to improve health-care affordability; information on the percentage of premium revenue spent on medical claims, administrative costs, executive salaries and other costs; the number of people whose experience is used to raise rates; and other data.

The health insurance industry has emphasized the need to control soaring medical costs, which they blame for higher rates, and object to the administration's heavy emphasis on insurers. #xThe industry also attributes higher rates to younger, healthier people dropping coverage.

"We agree with the goals outlined by Secretary Sebelius and would participate in a comprehensive program that included all players across the health-care industry, not only in the insurance sector," Pearl ringWellPoint spokesman Kristin Binns said.

Appriss Inc., a technology company based in Louisville, google优化, Ky., was selected to develop the new electronic monitoring system. Appriss already operates a system that links 18,000 pharmacies in nearby states. Gov. Jay Nixon said Monday that pharmaceutical companies have agreed to pay for developing and operating the new database. Omega 3 SoftgelsNixon, a Democrat, said real-time tracking of cold medication purchases would help law officers and ensure Missourians can buy medicine needed for legitimate purposes. People who are rejected when trying to buy cold medication would receive a receipt with Appriss' phone number and instructions to call the company for an explanation. The new system would be designed to spot fake identification, to flag multiple people buying medicine and reporting the same address and other suspicious activity.#x The drug companies-funded database comes as several Missouri lawmakers have proposed requiring a doctor's prescription before someone could buy cold medications that contain pseudoephedrine such as Sudafed, Claritin-D and Aleve Cold & Sinus.

For the ninth straight year in 2009, Missouri had the most meth lab incidents in the nation. Incidents include includes meth lab busts but also any documented evidence of meth-making. "Meth consumption continues to be a problem that devastates families and even whole communities in Missouri," Nixon said. "This database will be another important step toward cutting off meth makers at the source." Appriss was selected to develop the tracking system by a committee that represented health officials, pharmacies, law officers and prosecutors. Oregon blocked the sale of the pseudoephedrine-based medicines without a prescription through a law that took effect in 2006. In 2005, there were 141 meth lab incidents in Oregon, and in 2009, there were nine through late October.#x Some Missouri cities have acted on their own and now require prescriptions for those cold medications.

For example, in particularly hard-hit Franklin County, Union and Washington, Mo., enacted local ordinances requiring prescriptions for certain cold and allergy medications.Omega 3 Softgels Local officials said problems from meth had gotten bad enough to do something new.

Specialty may bias doctors' prostate cancer advice Specialty may bias doctors' prostate cancer advice This is problematic, the study's authors say,Ray Ban sunglasses because none of the options now available for treating localized prostate cancer have been shown to be any better than the others.#x

"The different treatments for prostate cancer...entail different side effects, different recovery profiles, and they require different time commitments," Dr. Thomas L. Jang of The Cancer Institute of New Jersey in New Brunswick, one of the study's authors, told Reuters Health. For this reason, he and his colleagues say, it should be the patient's preferences -- rather than the physician's specialty -- that guides treatment decisions.

Current options available for treating prostate cancer that has not spread include watchful waiting, in which a patient receives no treatment but is monitored closely,Compact fluorescent lamp; hormone therapy; radiation therapy; or surgery to remove the prostate. Radiation and surgery both carry the risk of urinary incontinence and impotence;Ray Ban sunglasses hormone therapy can cause hot flashes, breast tenderness, and loss of sex drive; while watchful waiting may lead to anxiety in men who fear their cancer will spread.

Surveys have suggested that specialists are more likely to recommend the type of treatment they provide; for example, radiation oncologists prefer radiation therapy, while urologists choose surgery.#x

To investigate whether the type of physician a prostate cancer saw would actually influence the type of treatment he got, Jang and his team looked at Medicare data on more than 85,000 men 65 and older diagnosed between 1994 and 2002 with localized prostate cancer. Within nine months of diagnosis, 21 percent had undergone prostate removal; 42 percent had radiation; 17 percent had hormone therapy; and 20 percent watchful waiting. Jang conducted the study, which is published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, while at Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.Ray Ban sunglasses

Half of the men had only seen a urologist, while 44 percent had seen a radiation oncologist and a urologist, 3 percent had seen a urologist and a medical oncologist, and 3 percent had seen all three specialists.

One-third of the men who had only seen a urologist underwent prostate surgery, and surgery was the most common treatment for the men who were 65 to 74 years old and only saw a urologist. However, among men of any age who saw a radiation oncologist as well as a urologist, Ray Ban sunglassesradiation therapy was the most common treatment;#x 83 percent of these men received radiation therapy.
