It’s My Party, and You Have to Answer
HERE’S an etiquette experiment for you: Replica jerseysE-mail an invitation for a party, one month out, to 45 friends. Request an R.S.V.P. Provide a follow-up e-mail message, #xtwo weeks later, politely reminding them to get back to you.
How many will?
My experiment arose from plans for an evening of food, drink and literature, with readings by myself and two other writers, at a restaurant. Not exactly a drop-in-if-you’re-around kind of thing, so I asked friends to R.S.V.P. My initial message brought in a dozen responses, and the follow-up a few more, but days before the event I had a paltry 23. Not 23 who planned to come, but 23 who had bothered to respond. Half my invitees had blown me off. Why? I wasn’t peddling life insurance, after all.
Asking around,NCR parts, I discovered that the phenomenon is widespread.Replica jerseys One friend of mine e-mailed invitations to a baby shower, and a third of the recipients failed to respond. Another announced a happy hour at her house and received a dozen yeses — only to find her party besieged by 35 people.
What’s preventing us from executing this basic social task?#x Is it the medium? Do Evites somehow not feel like “real” invitations? Is it our busy lives, so overbooked and overwhelmed we’ve drawn up the castle gates? Don’t invite me out this month, I’m ensconced! Or is it simple rudeness? Try as I might to understand, I kept feeling dissed.
What’s clear is how hard the R.S.V.P. rubs against the grain of contemporary life. In requesting people to anchor a plan in the distant future of a month hence, you are demanding a kind of navigation that Americans increasingly do not practice. We prefer to remain flexy, solidifying our plans incrementally as the date approaches. Let’s talk tomorrow. I’ll call you when I’m on the road. Cellphones in hand, we microadjust our schedules as they unfold around us. We’re like the air traffic controllers of our own lives.
It wasn’t always so. A while ago I made a lunch date with an elderly couple. As the day approached with no subsequent corroboration, I felt a strange excitement. Would all three of us just show up? We did, and I realized that what I felt was a small nostalgic thrill over social arrangements that seemed straight out of Jane Austen.
But back to my party. The day before the big event, I sent a final e-mail message, Replica jerseysthanking “the half of you who responded for helping keep the dying art of the R.S.V.P. alive.”#x This irked missive flushed out a final 10 hangdog respondents. But there remained a gang of 12 — the dirty dozen, the truly hardcore, fanatical nonresponders — who couldn’t even be shamed into R.S.V.P.ing.

Ga. court upholds key medical malpractice changes
A sharply divided Georgia Replica NHL jerseysSupreme Court on Monday upheld a key part of a sweeping 2005 law that made it more difficult for patients to win medical malpractice cases involving emergency health care providers.
The court's 4-3 ruling was a blow to plaintiff's attorneys and other critics of the legislation who argued the higher standard of proof required by the law made it almost impossible for patients injured by emergency room workers to win malpractice claims.
Critics of the law took another hit Monday when the court released a separate ruling,#x this one by a 5-2 vote, that upheld a provision that allowed one side in a lawsuit to pay the other side's legal fees in some cases. They had argued the practice could discourage many victims from bringing legitimate claims to court.
The court will likely issue a third ruling this month on a lawsuit that challenges the law's $350,000 limit on jury awards for malpractice victims' pain and suffering damages.
The lawsuit involving the emergency room provision was brought by Carol Gliemmo, who said an emergency room doctor at a Columbus hospital failed to detect a debilitating illness in April 2007 when she came in complaining of sudden pain behind her eyes.
She was released from the hospital when her blood pressure went down. But two days later her family practitioner ordered a CT scan,Buy in Global, which revealed a brain hemorrhage that left her paralyzed. #xHer family then filed a lawsuit claiming the doctor was negligent in failing to order a test that would have detected the brain aneurysm.
But the legislation requires the Gliemmos to prove emergency room doctors acted with "gross negligence," a standard that forces attorneys to prove they knowingly mistreated their patients. Replica NHL jerseysThe family claimed the requirement was unconstitutional, saying it's a nearly insurmountable hurdle.
The court's majority opinion, penned by Justice George Carley, found that it was "entirely logical" for lawmakers to approve the legislation in hopes of stemming the rising cost of medical malpractice insurance. He was joined by Justices P. Harris Hines, Harold Melton and David Nahmias.
A dissent written by Justice Robert Benham criticized the new legislation for leaving patients with a "lower standard of care and a higher burden of proof." He was joined by Chief Justice Carol Hunstein and Justice Hugh P. Thompson.
The second ruling, which centered on a case involving a former Atlanta Falcons player,#x upheld a part of the law designed to discourage frivolous lawsuits with new incentives for patients to settle out of court.
The "offer of settlement" provision required some plaintiffs to pay the otherReplica NHL jerseys side's attorney's fees if they lose their case or if they win only a portion of a settlement offer.

I was invited on MSNBC the other day to discuss Karl Rove’s Custom hockey jerseysbook with anchor Davis Shuster and journalist David Corn of Mother Jones magazine and the author of “The Lies of George W. Bush” only to be am-BUSHED with the worn allegation by the left that President Bush lied his way into war with Iraq.#x
The left is consumed with charges that somehow Bush and his “gang” were able to bamboozle Congress, the U.N., and everyone else on the planet with regard to why it was necessary to remove Saddam Hussein from power and bring him to justice. Both Shuster and Corn ganged up on me charging that Bush lied and would not let me get a word in edge wise. They interrupted and would not let me finish a thought. In a desperate attempt to “prove” he was right, Custom hockey jerseysCorn offered to bet me $1,000.00 that he could “prove” Bush lied. And, who was going to be the judge? Yep, you guessed it, David Shuster. Does that not sound like an impartial and “fair and balanced” wager? I think not.
All this in light of the fact that just last month, Vice President Joe Biden went on Larry King and bragged that “Iraq could be one of the greatest achievements of this administration.” #xThis from a man who as a US Senator was against the war and the surge and sided with many Democrats who declared in 2003 that the “war was lost.”
The left distorts the facts with regard to the lead up to the Iraq war to fit their conspiratorial theories. However here are the facts:
*November 1997: Hussein ordered all American weapons inspectors in Iraq to leave in violation of UN Security Council Resolution.
*December 1998: President Bill Clinton orders “Operation Desert Fox” a robust four day aerial bombing mission by US and UK Air Forces. This operation was in retaliation for Iraq’s failure to obey UN Security Council Resolutions and their obstruction of UN Weapons Inspections.
Clinton’s Secretary of State Madeleine Albright said the following about the attack:
"I don't think we're pretending that we can get everything, so this is - I think - we are being very honest about what our ability is. We are lessening,登车桥, degrading his ability to use this. #xThe weapons of mass destruction are the threat of the future. I think the president explained very clearly to the American people that this is the threat of the 21st century. Non-Melanoma Skin Cancers in the Millions and Rising
The incidence of non-melanoma skin cancer has steadily increased since the 1990s, pot-pourrimaking it by far the most common form of cancer, affecting more people than all other cancers combined,#x two new studies find.
More than 2 million Americans on Medicare were treated for non-melanoma skin cancer in 2006, up from 1.6 million in 1992, according to one study. The other found that one in five 70-year-olds has been treated for non-melanoma skin cancer.
Researchers called non-melanoma skin cancer an "epidemic" that is only going to get worse as all those bathing beauties and sun worshippers from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s get older, and their cumulative sun exposure racks up.
"We are dealing with a problem that is not going away," said Dr. Howard Rogers, a dermatologist in Norwich, Conn., and lead author of one of the studies. "The number has kept going up and up at a rate of 4.2 percent every year, on average, from 1992 to 2006," he said.
The studies are published in the March issue of the Archives of Dermatology.
The two types of non-melanoma skin cancer are basal cell and squamous cell. While basal cell carcinoma is slow-growing and rarely fatal, it can damage the surrounding tissue and bone if it's not caught early, pot-pourricausing disfigurement when the cancer is removed.
Squamous cell carcinoma is also rarely fatal, though it can metastasize and spread to the lymph nodes and other organs, Rogers said. When caught early, squamous cell carcinomas are also highly treatable.
In the study by Rogers and colleagues, the researchers analyzed data from two Medicare databases and national surveys. They found the total number of procedures to treat skin cancer in the Medicare population increased by nearly 77 percent between 1992 and 2006. Between 2002 and 2006 alone,#x skin cancer procedures increased by 16 percent.
In the second study, Dr. Robert Stern of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School in Boston, developed a mathematical model to estimate the prevalence of non-melanoma skin cancer in the United States.
With about 13 million white non-Hispanic U.S. residents having been treated for at least one non-melanoma skin cancer at the beginning of 2007, that means non-melanoma skin cancers have struck five times as many people as breast or prostate cancer. More people have had non-melanoma skin cancer than all other cancers combined over the last 31 years, google优化, according to the study.
Most of those who had a non-melanoma skin cancer had more than one, with the average being 1.6, he noted.
"This is only going to get worse," said Dr. Suephy Chen, an associate professor of dermatology at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta. "Our population is aging. Those people who grew up in the 1970s and 1980s when there was not a big sun-protection message out there are now coming into their 50s and 60s and are starting to develop skin cancers."
While non-melanoma skin cancers are the most common, melanoma is a serious worry. pot-pourriThough melanoma accounts for less than 5 percent of all skin cancers, #xit was expected to lead to an estimated 8,650 deaths in 2009, according to the American Cancer Society.

"Are you afraid of the Devil?” The world’s most famous exorcist levels his gaze at me and then smiles.
“No, it is he who is afraid of me.artificial pumpkin I work in the name of the Lord. Poor Satan.#x”
Poor Satan?
“Oh yes. The Evil One shouts and makes noises, but we are made in God’s image, we have the Holy Trinity on our side. There is no need to be afraid of the Devil unless we give in to his temptations.”
We are in the infirmary of the Society of St Paul, the order of Father Gabriele Amorth, in the shadow of St Paul’s Basilica, Rome. The Vatican’s chief exorcist was taken to hospital last autumn with a blood infection and is now convalescing — “they found nothing serious”. Perhaps it was the Devil who laid him low. “Oh no — just an illness. He has more serious evil to perform.”
Father Amorth made headlines this week by suggesting that those who had “given in to Satan’s temptations” included paedophile priests and even some cardinals and bishops who paid only lip service to the Gospels.
The growing crisis over the clerical sex abuse now engulfing Pope Benedict XVI and the Vatican, he said, was the work of Satan, who had even “infiltrated the Vatican corridors”.
Is the sex abuse crisis really due to the Devil? “Oh yes. artificial pumpkinAll evil is due to the intervention of the Devil,托盘, including paedophilia.”
And the Vatican? “Legions of demons have lodged there. The majority of those in the Vatican do good work. But Pope Paul VI talked about the ‘smoke of Satan’ infiltrating the Vatican as long ago as 1972.#x Satan sets out to damage the leadership of the Church — and of politics, industry and sport, for that matter.”
And although all manner of incidents, scandals and misdemeanours in Italy and abroad leap to mind as potential evidence of diabolical intervention, he declines to give examples. Father Amorth — or Don Gabriele, as he is universally known — has just published The Memoirs of an Exorcist, a book of interviews with Marco Tosatti, the Vatican journalist. In a style that is somewhat reminiscent of a medieval chronicle, he describes his often hair-raising experiences over the past quarter of a century in the front line against the Evil One and his minions.
Father Amorth, aged nearly 85, is honorary president of the International Association of Exorcists. He fought for the Resistance in the Second World War, took a law degree but then entered the Church.#x He began conducting exorcisms shortly after his ordination 60 years ago; in 1986 he was appointed by Cardinal Ugo Poletti, artificial pumpkin then the Vicar of Rome, as assistant to Father Candido Amantini, the chief exorcist, eventually succeeding him.

A High Protein Diet Won't Make You Lose Weight Long Term: In Fact, It May Make You Fatter
In this serieschristmas wreath of interviews I've conducted with extraordinary nutritional researchers and medical doctors, I've sought to understand the link between diet and health. #xThe common refrain is resoundingly clear in that a plant-based diet is both preventive and healing, whereas a diet high in animal protein is destructive to our health. And now it's become abundantly evident that a high protein diet is not only making us sick, but it also makes us fat.
There is no one who has more peer reviewed research on the subject of weight loss and overall health than Dean Ornish, M.D. He has sparked a revolution in cardiology with his studies which show that heart disease can be reversed through comprehensive lifestyle changes. His current research is showing that those very changes also affect gene expression -- that you can turn on or turn off genes that affect cancer, heart disease and longevity. He is the founder and President of the non-profit Preventive Medicine Research Institute and is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. Here's what he says about losing weight the healthy way, christmas wreath and keeping it off.
KF: It's widely believed that people lose weight fastest on a high protein diet. True?
DO: Initially, they may lose more weight because they are losing water weight. #xBut by the end the year, the weight usually returns. In general, google优化, slower weight loss by eating more healthfully is more sustainable. Slow but steady wins the race.
KF: Why do some people have such a hard time losing weight and keeping it off?
DO: It's not enough to focus only on what we eat and other behaviors; we need to work at a deeper level. The real epidemic in our country is not only obesity but also depression, isolation, and loneliness. As one patient told me, "When I feel lonely and depressed, I eat a lot of fat. It fills the void. Fat coats my nerves and numbs the pain." People often overeat when they're feeling stressed, lonely, and depressed --"comfort foods." christmas wreath
Everyone knows that diet and exercise play a role in how much we weigh,#x but many are surprised to learn what a powerful role emotional stress has in causing us to gain weight and how stress management techniques can help us to lose it and keep it off.

Talks with China over censorship have reached an apparent impasse and Google, artificial pumpkinsthe world’s largest search engine, is now “99.9 percent” certain to shut its Chinese search engine, #xthe Financial Times said on Saturday.
A Google spokeswoman would neither confirm nor deny the report to Wired.com, saying only, “We can’t confirm that story.” Google also declined to elaborate on any aspect of the conflict or talks with the Chinese government.
The Financial Times said in a report on its website Google had drawn up detailed plans for closing its Chinese search engine.
The newspaper cited a person familiar with the company’s thinking as saying that, while a decision could be made very soon, Google was likely to take some time to follow through with its plans.
That would be in order to bring about an orderly closure as the company takes steps to protect local employees from retaliation by authorities, it said.
China warned Google on Friday against flouting the country’s laws, #xas expectations grow for a resolution to a public battle over censorship and cyber-security.
Google shocked business and political circles in January when it threatened to pull out of China if it could not offer an unfiltered Chinese search engine. artificial pumpkinsThe threat came after cyber attacks originating from China on it and about 30 other firms.
“If you don’t respect Chinese laws, you are unfriendly and irresponsible, and the consequences will be on you,” China’s Minister of Industry and Information Technology, Li Yizhong, told reporters on Friday in answer to a question on what China would do if Google.cn simply stopped filtering search results.
That came after the chief executive of Google, Eric Schmidt,Fire hose, said on Wednesday he hoped to announce soon a result to talks with Chinese authorities on offering an uncensored search engine in China.#x

Kathleen Boyer suspects the mailman.
She said she could not think of anyone else in her neighborhood who would have complained about the two beehives she kept under a pine tree in her front yard in Flatbush, #xBrooklyn, Heavy duty tarpsleading the city’s health department to fine her $2,000 last fall.
“I was kind of surprised,” said Mrs. Boyer, an art director with a media company. “People see us in our bee suit and they’d bring their kids to watch us and ask us questions.”
New York City is among the few jurisdictions in the country that deem beekeeping illegal, lumping the honeybee together with hyenas, tarantulas, cobras, dingoes and other ******* considered too dangerous or venomous for city life. But the honeybee’s bad rap — and the days of urban beekeepers being outlaws — may soon be over.
On Tuesday, the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene’s board will take up the issue of amending the health code to allow residents to keep hives of Apis mellifera, the common, Heavy duty tarpsnonaggressive honeybee. Health department officials said the change was being considered after research showed that the reports of bee stings in the city were minimal and that honeybees did not pose a public health threat.
The officials were also prodded by beekeepers who, in a petition and at a public hearing last month,#x argued that their hives promoted sustainable agriculture in the city.
A ban, of course,Grow lights, has not deterred many New Yorkers from setting up hives on rooftops and in yards and community gardens, doing it as a hobby, to pollinate their plants or to earn extra income from honey. Although the exact number of beekeepers in the city is unknown, many openly flout the law. They have their own association, hold beekeeping workshops, sell their honey at farmers’ markets and tend to their hives as unapologetically as others might jaywalk, blaming their legal predicament on people’s ignorance of bees.
“People fear that if there’s a beehive on their rooftop,Heavy duty tarps they’ll be stung,” said Andrew Coté, president of the New York City Beekeepers Association, which was formed two years ago and has 220 members. #x
“Honeybees are interested in water, pollen and nectar,” he said. “The real danger is the skewed public perception of the danger of honeybees.”

Not so fast.
The last time they were a top seed was 1998, when they also were a first-round host. A most gracious host, in fact. They were shocked by Harvard 71-67, the only time a top seed has lost to a 16 seed in the tournament's history.
When the tournament seedings were announced Monday, coach Tara VanDerveer said she'll mention that upset to her players today when they begin preparations for Saturday's game against 16th-seed UC Riverside (17-15). Iowa plays Rutgers in a 5 p.m. game, and the winners play at 6:30 p.m. Monday.
Stanford could play four tournament games without Cord embroidery fabricleaving Northern California because Sacramento's Arco Arena is the site of the regional.
"There's nothing guaranteed because you're a one seed," VanDerveer said. "We all know what happened the last time we were a one seed, and obviously we don't want that repeated."
The Cardinal (31-1) are ranked second in the nation. The only team that has beaten them in their last 53 games has been Connecticut. The Huskies whipped them 83-64 in last year's national semifinals and beat them again 80-68 this season.
Stanford would get its chance at a rematch only if both teams reach the final April 6 in San Antonio. The top-ranked Huskies have won 72 straight games.
UCLA coach Nikki Caldwell isn't counting out Stanford if that matchup materializes. What happens if a renter wants solar power?
Most of the time,托盘, it’s tough luck, unless the home’s owner agrees to addMetal halide bulbs panels. But #xa new solution is springing up in pockets of the country: community solar arrays.
Sometimes called solar gardens or farms, the idea is that utilities build the arrays, and customers — renters, people with shady roofs and even condo owners — can buy a share.
The Sacramento Municipal Utility District runs such a program, called “Solar Shares.” It serves up to 1,000 customers and is currently sold out. The concept has also appeared in St. George, Utah and Falmouth, Mass., (the Falmouth array was privately financed up-front, as was a similar project in Brewster, Mass.).
The utility in Tucson, Ariz., is also seeking regulatory approval to build Metal halide bulbsa community array near the airport, on land that would be difficult to develop otherwise.
“This program was developed in response to customers who have told us they would like to invest in solar energy for their own home but for one reason or another are not candidates for a rooftop solar array,” said Joe Salkowski, a spokesman for Tucson Electric Power.
As with all solar energy, buying into community solar isn’t cheap. The Sacramento program adds about 9 percent on average to customers’ bills. Under the Tucson proposal, customers would be able to buy 150 kilowatt-hour shares for $3 extra #x(though they can subtract the fossil fuel surcharge Metal halide bulbsthat would otherwise appear on their bill).

March 16 (Bloomberg) -- Google Inc.’s possible withdrawal Bee Propolis Softgelfrom China,ATM Parts, the world’s biggest Internet market #xby users, must meet Chinese regulations, according to the nation’s Ministry of Commerce.
Google should properly deal with any withdrawal, Yao Jian, spokesman for the ministry, said today at a press conference. The company should continue to abide by Chinese laws as it agreed to do when it initially entered the country, he said.
The owner of the world’s most-popular search engine said Jan. 12 it may exit China pending talks with the government on plan to stop censoring search results on its Google.cn site, after claiming it was targeted by cyber attacks. China’s Minister of Industry and Information Technology Li Yizhong last week said the government believes the dispute can be resolved.
The U.S. company is required to file a notice if it ends its operations in the country, and such a document hasn’t been received by the government, Yao said.
Google’s advertisers in China are being advised to Bee Propolis Softgelswitch to rivals such as Baidu Inc. and business partners are exploring alternatives as speculation grows the Mountain View, California- based company will shut its main operations in the country. Oil traders place spring bets on "widowmaker"
(Reuters) - Some of the boldest speculative oil traders at banks Montreal canadiensand hedge funds are betting on a return of gasoline's strength ahead of peak summer demand, bringing an early shift to summer from winter to the oil market#x.
Many traders use a popular spread play between gasoline and heating oil to try to make money from seasonal shifts in demand in the Northern Hemisphere.
But the spread is one of the most volatile and unpredictable in the oil market and is often called "the widowmaker" after the plight of those who have made the wrong bet.
Unusually cold winter weather and a belief in resurgent gasoline demand this summerMontreal canadiens has lured traders back onto the seasonal play after 2009's relatively flat demand picture, analysts and traders said.
"We have seen massive speculative inflows this year and this has helped boost the gasoline premium over distillates,State Flags," said Olivier Jakob of Petromatrix. "It is trying to price in the gasoline season a bit early."
Traders said historically low refinery utilisation rates of around 80 percent in the United States and Europe triggered by a sharp drop in industry demand for middle distillates, such as diesel, should constrain gasoline supply in the world's top oil consumer.
"The hot money is on gasoline this season and a lot of hedge funds have bet on it," said an oil products trader at a bank and a regular widowmaker trader.
"Seasonality#x is back because of run cuts and because it's been such a cold winter. There is a belief that demand for gasoline will be very good this year Montreal canadiensbecause it is not as connected to the recession as distillates," the trader said.

Smartphone app botnet experiment blows up a storm
Security researchers fooled nearly 8,000 iPhone and Android userschristmas decoration into joining a mobile smartphone "botnet" #xunder the guise of installing an apparently innocuous weather app.
Derek Brown and Daniel Tijerina of TippingPoint's Digital Vaccine Group carried out the exercise in the run-up to a presentation at last week's RSA Conference as an illustration of how easily social engineering tricks developed on the web and with PCs might be applied to internet-enabled smartphones. The duo's WeatherFist app obtained users' GPS coordinates and telephone numbers before providing local weather forecasts.
The application was not published on either the official iPhone or Android application storeschristmas decoration, samurai swords, but still attracted hundreds of takers of (presumably jailbroken) iPhones and other smartphones via third party app marketplaces, such as Cydia and SlideME (app T&Cs via Google cache here).
The researchers said they have created - but not distributed - a malicious version of the app capable of harvesting data, posting fake updates on social networking sites and sending spam.
The experiment received positive write-ups by New Scientist and Dark Reading. However other security firms have questioned the value of the exercise. Sophos, for example, argues that the faux malware created by the ethical hackers does nothing not already attempted by the real-life cybercrooks behind the Duh worm#x, which christmas decorationspread on jailbroken iPhones in the Netherlands last November. ?
