What's at Stake For Eric Berry
Tennessee safety Eric Berry has been the most talked about defensive back entering this year's 2010 NFL and a bad outing at the NFL network could lose him millions of dollars.
There has not been a defensive back, let alone a safety, talked about this much since 1998 when the Raiders picked Charles Woodson at No. 4 or when the Redskins picked Champ Bailey at No. 7 in 1999.
That's not saying that there haven't been other highly touted defensive backs since then, but the amount of hype this year has exceeded many defensive backs of the recent past.
Berry has the makings of an impact defender the moment he steps onto the football field when the 2010 regular season begins.
Many have compared Berry to Ed Reed, but let's be honest here in saying that those comparisons are always silly. Berry could become the best safety in the NFL, then the next young safety who comes into the NFL shop will be the next Eric Berry.
Berry's abilities are not to be questioned, and his strengths include: high productivity, very athletic, great speed with a quick initial boost, smooth running with fluid hips, rarely misses tackles, violent hitter, plays through pain and he is a very intelligent football player to name a few of his attributes.
His current stock has never been higher and in some mock drafts he is projected as high as the No. 2 overall pick to the Lions.
That may be ridiculously too high, but there is no way that Berry escapes the top 10 since there are teams who could use a playermaker at safety including the Seahawks (No. 6) and the Browns (No. 7).
Berry will be going into Indianapolis for the NFL scores Combine riding high, but a bad performance could drop Berry from a top 10 pick to the middle of the first round.
A drop like that could lose Berry close to $20 million in guaranteed money on his contract.
Berry needs a good outing in Indy, otherwise his wallet will be much lighter, and he should already be feeling the presure because he stands in a postion to lose more money than almost any other player in this draft class right now.

So get the visions of Julius Peppers terrorizing quarterbacks in the pewter and red out of your noggin. Forget Karlos Dansby providing the much needed leadership in the Buccaneers linebacking core. Don't even think about Vince Wilfork plugging that big ole hole in the middle of the Buccaneers defensive line.
It's not going to happen, folks.
Unless the Buccaneers are putting up the mother of all smokescreens, Tampa Bay is not going to be a big time player in free agency.
Will they sign some guys? Certainly, but you're talking Jimmy Wilkerson types. Guys like Stylz White who come in on "prove it" contracts that require little to no signing bonus or guaranteed money.
This economic reality won't prevent the Bucs from trying to find some answers in the veteran meat market.
We know the Bucs need a veteran backup quarterback, and Chad Pennington would be a perfect fit. Yet, his price tag is likely way too high, even coming off a major injury. A more likely guy the Bucs might have their eye on is someone like Mark Bulger, who, if released by the Rams, could be reunited with his old QB coach Greg Olsen, the Bucs' offensive coordinator.
Rex Grossman—yes, that one—could be another option to provide a veteran backup behind Josh Freeman.
With guard Aaron Sears a question mark, Jeremy Zuttah not strong enough in the running game, and Jeremy Trueblood a walking false start and personal foul, the Bucs could use some help along the offensive line.
Again, thanks to the new rules in the uncapped year, there's not much to choose from. Older veterans Tra Thomas and Orlando Pace aren't quite what they once were. Guys like Tony Pashos and Rex Hadnot could be bargain buys but are they really that much of an upgrade over current Buccaneers personnel?
The pickings are pretty slim at wide receiver, another need position on offense for Tampa Bay. One guy who has some good production and may not command a huge contract on the open market is Houston's wide out Kevin Walter. According to Pewter Report, the Bucs have had their eye on Kampman for some time and if the price is right he could be one player they target. Gator alum Ian Scott has been a backup with the Bears for a couple seasons but is still relatively young and can play in the Tampa Two hybrid head coach Raheem Morris will be employing.
The Bucs would love competition for their starters at linebacker, and Dansby certainly fits that bill but he will likely be way out the Bucs' price range. If Gary Brackett hits the free agency scene, he'd definitely be a target for the Buccaneers. Angelo Crowell can play all three positions and wants to return to Tampa Bay. Pisa Tinoisamoa has starting experience and is still young enough to make an impact.
Warren Sapp pulled from NFL
Former football star Warren Sapp was arrested Saturday following an alleged domestic violence incident at a Miami Beach hotel, police said.
Sapp was charged with one count of misdemeanor domestic battery and is expected to appear before a Miami-Dade County judge Sunday, Miami Beach police spokesman Juan Sanchez said.
Shortly after police officials confirmed the charge NFL spokesman Dennis Johnson said in an e-mail to The Associated Press that Sapp — who is an analyst — wouldn't be part of the Super Bowl coverage for Sunday's game between the Indianapolis Colts and New Orleans Saints.
"We have been made aware of the arrest of Warren Sapp by the Miami Beach Police Department," a network statement said. "In light of these circumstances, Warren Sapp will not appear on NFL news while we review the matter."
The domestic violence allegation was reported around noon Saturday and detectives interviewed Sapp later that day, Sanchez said. The incident occurred early Saturday morning at the Shore Club hotel, according to a police news release.
The victim had a swollen knee and bruises on her neck, according to an arrest affidavit. She told detectives that she was partying with Sapp and her friends at the hotel and asked for his room key when she grew tired. Sapp reportedly woke up the victim a few hours later and they started to argue. She told investigators that Sapp started to choke her and pushed her down on a couch.
As the argument escalated, Sapp grabbed the woman by her shirt and neck and threw her down again, the affidavit states.
Sapp told investigators that he let the woman stay in his room but asked her to leave a few hours later. He told police that the woman fell on her leg when he tried to help her get off a couch.
A telephone message left for Sapp's attorney was not immediately returned, nor was an e-mail.
Sanchez said Sapp was expected to be transferred to NFL Miami-Dade County jail Saturday.
Sapp, a former defensive tackle, played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Oakland Raiders during his NFL scores career. He was also once a contestant on ABC's "Dancing with the Stars."

"You just do as what the Lord leads you to do," Cobb said. "There's a time to hand out tracts and a time to talk with people."
Earlier in the day, Cobb said he had spoken with a young man, Juan, who was curious about the difference between highly organized religion and a relationship with Jesus Christ.
Cobb said he gave the young man a clear introduction to salvation through Jesus Christ alone and that he was very receptive and open. At a point in the conversation, however, Cobb left the man with his email for more questions and ended the conversation.
"It came time, you could tell, it was enough," Cobb said.
Cobb's team of three spent several days at various venues where Super Bowl crowds would be gathering, including Sun Life Stadium, to interact with people as they were entering the stadium or waiting in line for the NFL shop game between the Indianapolis Colts and New Orleans Saints.
There is no one strategy for any of the events the team targets, Cobb said, explaining, "I just try and see what the Lord says and see what works. Sometimes He speaks through other people as I see how they react."
Big-event evangelism may not be "for everybody to do every day," Cobb said. "But it would be beneficial for everybody to do it at least once." A lot more than a ballgame is at stake, he reminded. "If they get out here and lead someone to Christ, then they are caught for all time."
