Democratic leaders said Thursday that they were increasingly inclined to Fire hosesrelease a final health-care bill that could accomplish two of President Obama's top domestic priorities#x: guaranteeing coverage to 30 million uninsured Americans and vastly expanding federal aid for college students.
Both proposals, stuck in Congress for nearly a year, are gaining new momentum as Democrats contemplate facing voters in November without having delivered on any of Obama's major policy objectives.
Key Senate Democrats initially balked at combining the health-reform bill with a measure that overhauls the nation's student-loan program, but on Thursday they had warmed to the idea.
Senate Budget Committee Chairman Kent Conrad (D-N.D.) had been one of the chief opponents becauseFire hoses he feared the education proposal -- which would free up billions in federal subsidies to private lenders as it increases funds for Pell Grants -- would provoke procedural challenges from Republicans. But Conrad said the Senate parliamentarian suggested in a preliminary ruling that combining the bills could work, provided that the right balance on cost was found. "I'd say yes, we're leaning toward it,katana," Conrad said.
White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, who supports pairing the measures, said Thursday night that lawmakers had made "a lot of decisions" but were still addressing several concerns related to the education bill. "We're getting close," Emanuel said after meeting at the Capitol with Democratic leaders.
House and Senate leaders were making final adjustments late Thursday to a package of fixes on the Senate health-care bill that would clear the way for its final passage. The education proposal would be included among the fixes and, under special budget reconciliation rules, protected from a GOP filibuster in the Senate.
Under the emerging plan#x, the House would accept the version of health-care reform that the Senate approved on Christmas Eve, along with adjustments to key provisions sought by House Democrats, mostly aimed at reducing the bill's financial burden on middle-class families. Haim had suffered from flulike symptoms for two days, the deputy coroner said.
"We found no illicit drugs. However, we did recover four of his prescription meds at the location," Winter said, adding he does not know what those drugs were.

To illustrate, #xI'd like to describe one such bug we encountered at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory while developing the flight software for NASA's Mars Pathfinder spacecraft.
Because of Pathfinder's high reliability requirements and the probability of unpredictable hardware errors due to the increased radiation effects in space, we adopted a highly "defensive" programming style. This included performing extensive error checks in the software to detect the possible side effects of radiation-induced hardware glitches and certain software bugs.
One member of our team, Steve Stolper, had a simple arithmetic computation in his software that was guaranteed to produce an even result (2, 4, 6 and so on) if the computer was working correctly. Many programmers would not bother to check the result of such a simple computation. Stolper, however, put in an explicit test to see if the result was even. We referred to this test as his "two-plus-two-equals-five check." We never expected to see it fail.

That lingering shot, and dozens of equally adoring ones like it, could fill a young Hollywood hunks calendar in no time.
But this is a movie, not a magazine spread,samurai swords, and therein lies the rub. What the actor hasn't yet found is a way past those soulful eyes into the soul itself. If he does, Pattinson could have the makings of a brilliant career, something more than the hot streak he's got going as the "it" guy of the moment.ATM Parts The same problems plague the film, which is beautifully shot but its emotional potential unrealized.
The story itself is set in a not too distant NYC past, with Tyler still reeling from the death of his brother some years ago. What begins as a revenge date with Ally in that big-city, small-world, minor-skirmish,#x major-grudge way, soon turns into something more.
Ally's another victim of tragedy, and that mutual society of unprocessed pain becomes their central bond, and the central plot device driving the movie. Both have family issues. Tyler is pulled between poles -- a remote father, Pierce Brosnan as a New York attorney by way of Brooklyn, or at least that's what the accent sounds like, and an emotionally wounded artistic younger sister, played by the delightful Ruby Jerins. Ally, meanwhile, has an over-protective father, a cop ( Chris Cooper) who's having trouble with his daughter growing up.
There is a lot of working through relationship and life issues undertaken in "Remember Me,"#x and screenwriter Will Fetters, in his first feature, shows a nice facility with dialogue, which helps offset some of the weaknesses in the plot. Fetters has a particularly good ear for those circling seductions of slacker twentysomethings, ATM Partsas they waver between arrogance and uncertainty, half-finished metaphors hanging like smoke in the air.

In the past five days,DVD Ripper, a batch of the flavour enhancer hydrolyzed vegetable protein (HVP) found last month to be contaminated with salmonella has already led to the recall of 94 items in the U.S. and four in Canada, most recently President's Choice Mustard-flavoured pretzel nuggets.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency warns there will be more. The Food and Drug Administration in the U.S. says the contaminated HVP, made by Nevada's Basic Food Flavors, Inc., could balloon into one of the largest-ever food recalls in North America.
The ingredient is added to thousands of processed foods, including chips, dips, salad dressings, sauces, hotdogs, soups and frozen dinners. And HVP may not be listed as an ingredient.
There have been no reported illnesses associated with the recalled products, U.S. and Canadian authorities said. The risk is considered "very low" for processed foods that are cooked,energy saving lamp but higher for uncooked, ready-to-eat foods like chips and dip, they said.
Derek Nighbor, senior vice-president of regulatory affairs at the Food and Consumer Products of Canada, said Canadian food manufacturers work with some of the most stringent safety regulations in the world,#x and "are working quickly to ensure any contaminated products are removed from the marketplace."
But industry experts say a weak tracking system across the North American supply chain for such a common ingredient means consumers can expect some of the recalls to trickle out over an extended period.
"You're dealing with a by-product, so if companies are not recalling their product, it's because they probably don't have an answer and they don't know. Why? Because most companies do have a food traceability system, #xbut it's not transversal, energy saving lampmeaning that their system doesn't necessarily communicate efficiently with the systems of suppliers or customers or clients," said Sylvain Charlebois, University of Regina business professor and author of the new book Not On My Plate: managing risk and fear.

It's an exam more than half of the people who should be screened for colon cancer put off, according to the American Cancer Society. Some area residents who have reached 50 put off having a screening colonoscopy because they are unemployed and have no health insurance, say physicians associated with North Florida Regional Medical Center.
Gastroenterologists at Digestive Disease Associates and North Florida Endoscopy Center are offering their help during the month of March, which is national colorectal cancer awareness month.
They are offering free screening colonoscopies to 50 people who are 50, have lost their jobs,Compact fluorescent lamp, are uninsured and have never had a colonoscopy.
"We will help 50 people but want to reach thousands with a message," #xSupplementDr. Thomas Beers said. "The message is that many colon cancers can be prevented. Colonoscopies save lives."
Those who are interested in the program can call the toll-free line for Consult-a-Nurse at 800-611-6913 to answer a few brief screening questions. Eligible callers will be transferred to have a consultation and colonoscopy scheduled during the month of March.

Started in 2003, Valve is now arguably the biggest online distributor of games. By last month, Valve revealed that it had more than 25 million active Steam user accounts and, at any given time, about 2 million gamers are using the service. There are more than 1,000 games available on Steam. Not all of them will be immediately available on the Mac platform as this will depend on developers.
According to Valve, Steamworks for the Mac supports all of the Steamworks APIs, and a new feature, called Steam Play, allows customers who purchase the product for the Mac or Windows to play on the other platform free of charge. Hydraulic cylinderThis means a gamer can play the PC version of a game via Steam Play, then continue on the Mac version without having to pay extra.
Valve's library includes titles it developed: Left 4 Dead 2,DVD Ripper, Team Fortress 2, Counter-Strike, Portal, and the Half-Life series, which will be available in April. As these games belong to Valve, #xthey will likely be the first games ported to the Mac platform.
John Cook, director of Steam development at Valve, revealed that games will be ported to Mac as native versions, as opposed to via an emulation, and in the future Valve will release games simultaneously for Windows, Mac, and the Xbox 360. Mac and Windows players will be part of the same multiplayer universe, sharing servers, lobbies, and so forth. Cook said the first Mac Steam client is currently in beta testing.#x

But in recent weeks, both have begun to express doubts about whether cars, factories and power plants have anything to do with global warming.
The shift by Rubio and Pawlenty -- as well as other prominent Republicans -- reflects the rising power of climate change skeptics in the GOP, where global warming is becoming a litmus test for conservatives.
Rubio, former speaker of the Florida House of Representatives, is running for the U.S. Senate. Pawlenty, Minnesota's governor, is eyeing a 2012 presidential bid.
For Republicans, "the new political expediency is to be a global warming skeptic," said Marc Morano, executive editor of the skeptic clearinghouse website ClimateDepot.com and compact fluorescent lampa former aide to outspoken skeptic Sen. James M. Inhofe (R-Okla.).
