Ga. court upholds key medical malpractice changes

The lawsuit involving the emergency room provision was brought by Carol Gliemmo, who said an emergency room doctor at a Columbus hospital failed to detect a debilitating illness in April 2007 when she came in complaining of sudden pain behind her eyes.
She was released from the hospital when her blood pressure went down. But two days later her family practitioner ordered a CT scan, which revealed a brain hemorrhage that left her paralyzed. #xHer family then filed a lawsuit claiming the doctor was negligent in failing to order a test that would have detected the brain aneurysm.
But the legislation requires the Gliemmos to prove emergency room doctors acted with "gross negligence," a standard that forces attorneys to prove they knowingly mistreated their patients. Researchers have been learning that people are colonized with billions of microbes, both inside and on the body. And studies have shown that these colonies are unique to the individual and even to the place on the body.
Fierer's team wanted to see how much of a trail might be left by these mostly benign bacteria. So they swabbed the computer keyboards of volunteers to show that indeed, each person left not only a trail of unique bacteria, but one that lasted.

The technique was about 70 to 90 percent accurate, Fierer's team reported the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"The obvious question then was whether we could identify objects that have been touched by particular individuals," Fierer said.
They also left the bacteria out in the open for two weeks to see if they would break down, but they did not#x. "That finding was a real surprise to us," said Fierer. "Wewicker basket China didn't know just how hardy these creatures were."

Beijing and Washington appear to be locked in a dialogue of the deaf in the run-up to a U.S. Treasury Department report due on April 15 that will determine whether China is manipulating its exchange rate for trade advantage.
"If the exchange rate issue is politicized, then in coping with the global financial crisis this will be of no help in coordination between the parties involved," Chinese Commerce Ministry spokesman Yao Jian told a regular news conference.
Yao rejected the argument that China's hefty trade surpluswicker basket with the United States was due to the yuan, also called the renminbi,Compact fluorescent lamp, which some U.S. economists judge to be 25 percent or more undervalued.
"The trade surplus is not caused by the renminbi exchange rate. The trade surplus is an outcome and phenomenon of globalization. It will exist for a time," he said.
Yao's comments echoed recent ones by Premier Wen Jiabao and other Chinese officials, who have stressed that whatever adjustments may come to the nation's exchange rate, Beijing does not want to be seen as bowing to foreign pressure.

According to prosecutors, LaRose began a series on online correspondences with unindicted co-conspirators after posting a comment on YouTube under the alias JihadJane that stated she was "desperate to do something somehow to help" Muslim people who were suffering. She said her blond hair and blue eyes were assets that would allow her to "blend in with many people".
One conspirator directed LaRose to travel to Sweden, hunt down christmas giftsa resident there and to kill him, the indictment claims. Her answer: "I will make this my goal till i achieve it or die trying."
The identity of the Swedish resident was not revealed in court documents, but numerous published reports, citing people familiar with the investigation, said it was Lars Vilks, a cartoonist who ignited outrage in the Muslim world after depicting Muhammed with the body of a dog.

Since we talked about unreleased Sonic games games last time, I thought it fitting to discuss Mario this week. We only know of a few Mario projects that never made it off the ground, including Miyamoto's first draft of Super Mario Bros. (the story goes that it was scrapped entirely), a two-player version of Super Mario 64, and an adventure on the Virtual Boy. The trouble is, we know very little about these games, and we probably never will.
One game we do know quite a bit about however is Super Mario's Wacky Worlds, an officially sanctioned pseudo-sequel to Super Mario World in development for the CD-i, of all platforms, by NovaLogic. Yes, that's right, the Delta Force guys.
As a lot of you are probably aware of, Nintendo signed a very controversial agreement with Philips in the early 90s to develop a CD-ROM add-on for its Super Nintendo console. The platform Casual productnever materialized (and we should probably talk about why in a future article), but the agreement resulted in two things: one,hats, Philips acquired the licensing rights to use Nintendo characters in games for its CD-i console, and two, Sony - Nintendo's previous partner for a CD-ROM unit - took its revenge for being stabbed in the back and entered the hardware market on its own with its PlayStation.
According to a recollection written by programmer Silas Warner before his unfortunate death in 2004, the origin of Wacky Worlds came from a meeting with Nintendo. NovaLogic had recently shipped The Rocketeer for the Super Nintendo, and were looking for more work from the company.
"A Nintendo sales executive came up with the idea that maybe simple Nintendo titles could play on the CD-i," said Warner. "I suspect he was thinking of some kind of adapter to plug a Nintendo #xcartridge into a CD slot! But it set off a frantic race at NovaLogic. The projectCasual product was to put a popular Nintendo game, Super Mario World, onto a CD-i disc."
