Behind the Music of Halo 3: ODST
Though they've collaborated on music Microfiber clothfor well over a decade -- creating scores for games ranging from Myth: The Fallen Lords to Oni -- it was the Halo franchise that finally catapulted composers Martin O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori #xto fame. Since the first game's release, the iconic music from the series has been performed live in concert by some of the world's finest orchestras and choirs, sold untold numbers of soundtrack albums, and become some of the most widely recognized music in games.
With the impending release of Halo 3: ODST, fans can expect to hear O'Donnell and Salvatori work their magic again, along with composers C. Paul Johnson (Halo 3) and Stan LePard (Crimson Skies), to round out the game's more than three hours of music. But despite the Halo name, this latest score is set to make an interesting departure from the previous games' compositions, with a darker, more introspective tone. To find out what went into making the game's music and what players can expect, we spoke with the men behind the music.
As Bungie's audio director, O'Donnell started composing Halo 3: ODST's first themesMicrofiber cloth last year while the company was still creating the game's announcement trailer. As usual, he wrote the main thematic work, which he then shared with the other composers to see if it inspired any different approaches. Chicago-based Salvatori joined the project in early February this year, helping bring the music to completion roughly two months later in a whirlwind of activity.
"Marty had started writing before me, and sent me some of his ideas," Salvatori explains. "I picked a few that I felt I could add some magic to, and worked on those. I also came up with several ideas that I sent to Marty that he put his hands on. Once he felt we had enough material, I flew to Seattle and we spent about two weeks together finishing arrangements and, the last couple days I was there, recording live musicians. It was intense because a lot of work was compacted into a fairly short time, but it was a blast!"
Those live musicians were, of course, from the Northwest Sinfonia, the orchestra that has recorded more video game music than any ensemble outside of Prague -- including the scores for Medal of Honor and World of Warcraft. Halo 3: ODST's soundtrack #xmakes use of a 60-piece orchestra, which the composers configured in various waysMicrofiber cloth during the two days of recording at Seattle's Studio X. Additionally,Buy in Global, Harry Hmura once again performs electric guitar for the franchise.

But a repeat may be tougher in the current global climate, with the dollar strengthening against some key currencies.
The president may also face domestic opposition over a renewed emphasis on free-trade policies that some argue have helped shift U.S. manufacturing jobs overseas -- a sensitive issue at a time when unemployment remains at nearly 10 percent. Predicting such an argument, Obama said Thursday that although he sympathized with communities that have lost factories and livelihoods to overseas labor, the country needs to recommit to free trade in a way thatSafety barrier ensures Americans#x benefit through the opening of new markets for their goods and services.

"When it gets to the point where it would cost less to sequence the genome using these techniques than it does to send off a sample to test for a few genes, then you can start moving medicine from just seeing people who are sick to trying to prevent people from getting sick," said Dr. Jeffery Vance, director of the Center for Genomic Medicine at the Hussman Institute for Human Genomics, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. "You can see where things are going. This is showing that it's practical, it can be done and that medicine will start slowly to move toward using this technique as a diagnostic technique for all these individuals and families who have what looks like an inherited disease but not a big family history."
And, Vance pointed out, #xgenes don't change like cholesterol and blood pressure do. Textile fabricThese tests would only have to be performed once.

The findings, reported this week in the Archives of Internal Medicine, are based on a study of 19,220 United States women aged 39 or older who, at the start of the study, fell into the “normal weight” category based on their body mass index. Researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston tracked the women’s drinking habits over 13 years. About 60 percent of the women were light or regular drinkers, while about 40 percent reported drinking no alcohol.
Over the course of the study, 41 percent of the women became overweight or obese. Although alcohol is packed with calories (about 150 in a six-ounce glass of wine), #xthe nondrinkers in the study actually gained more weight over time: nine pounds, on average, compared with an average gain of about three pounds among regular moderate drinkers. The risk of becoming overweight was almost 30 percent lower for women who consumed one or two alcohol beverages a day,Pearl ring compared with nondrinkers.
The findings are certain to be confusing for women who continue to receive conflicting messages about the health benefits and risks of alcohol. Although moderate drinking is associated with better heart health, regular drinking also increases breast cancer risk.
The trend toward less weight gain among drinkers doesn’t appear to hold true for men. A 2003 study of British men showed that regular drinkers gained more weight than nondrinkers. Studies suggest that drinking alcohol has different effects on eating habits among men and women. #xMen typically add alcohol to their daily caloric intake, whereas women are more likely to substitute alcohol for food. A judge has ordered Mercedes-Benz USA LLC to pay $482,000 in damages and legal fees to a Wisconsin customer who was sold a defective car and not given a refund on time.
Vince Megna,#x a Milwaukee lawyer who represents the customer, High pressure sodium lampsaid he believes the judgment is the largest involving a single car under a state "lemon law," which protect consumers who are sold junk cars.
Mercedes-Benz spokeswoman Donna Boland said the company, a unit of the German car maker Daimler AG, is disappointed the judge overturned an earlier verdict in favor of the company. The spat over the 2005 Mercedes-Benz E 320 has already dragged on more than four years, and the company's lawyer on Friday asked the court to put the judgment on hold pending an appeal.
While states have a variety of lemon laws, Wisconsin's is one of the strongest. It allows customers who buy cars that don't run or can't be repaired to demand a replacement or refund. Manufacturers have 30 days to respond and can be ordered to pay double the purchase price plus legal fees for violating the law.
Bob Silverman, a prominent lemon law attorney in Ambler, Pa. who was not involved in the case, agreed it was one of the largest judgments for a car he's seen and was an important victory for consumers.
"This one result is very important to the entire auto industry," Silverman said. "It teaches them a lesson they ought to comply with the law promptly or they are going to have to pay in the end."
Despite the pending judgment, customer Marco Marquez,#x a 37-year-old businessman from Waukesha, called the case "a complete nightmare" and said he was still waiting for his money back. It all started when Marquez, who owns Mexican restaurants in Waukesha and Janesville,DVD Ripper, purchased the E 320 for $56,000 from a Milwaukee dealership in 2005.
Almost immediately, the car often would not start. The battery was replaced multiple times, but the problem continued. After several repair attempts, the dealership said the problem could not be fixed.
Marquez hired Megna, who sent the company a refund demand in October 2005. After a few weeks, an employee tried to talk Marquez into taking a replacement instead. He declined and again asked for a refund. At one point, the employee said he should fire his lawyer and deal with them on his own.
The company finally agreed to the refund, but failed to provide one within 30 days. On the 31st day, Megna filed the lawsuit on behalf of Marquez seeking double damages and attorneys' fees.
Mercedes-Benz has acknowledged the car was defective, #xbut for years has accused Marquez of acting in bad faith.
The company says an employee asked Marquez for information about his auto loan on the 30th day so the refund could be granted, but Marquez failed to follow through.High pressure sodium lamp Megna said Mercedes-Benz had the information it needed for the refund but was stalling.

That may sound like a joke, but to the members of the Girl Scout Council of the Nation's Capital, it's no laughing matter. So why is something as simple as changing a light bulb a big deal?
For one thing, traditional bulbs use a lot of electricity. In the typical home, lighting accounts for about 20 percent of the total energy use. More-efficient light bulbs, sometimes called compact fluorescent, or CFL, bulbs, use about 75 percent less electricity than standard incandescent bulbs, #xand they last up to 10 times as long. According to the government, if every home in America replaced just one incandescent bulb a year with an energy-saving variety,Energy saving bulb it would cut down on so much pollution that it would be like taking 800,000 cars off the road.
It also saves money: If every local Girl Scout replaced just one light bulb, according to the organization, those homes would save nearly $300,000 a year in energy costs. (That's about $4.76 per house.)
The national Girl Scouts organization has made helping the environment one of its core missions. Troop leaders nationwide have taken on this task in different ways, encouraging girls to work in community gardens or start recycling programs in schools, for example.

Planned Parenthood, which supports abortion coverage, fired off a missive last week from President Cecile Richards, who said that she wasn't happy with either the House bill or the Senate version. "Under the burdensome Nelson provision in the Senate healthcare reform bill," Richards said in an E-mailed statement, "it is anticipated that most private health insurers would no longer offer coverage for abortion. Since most women with private health insurance have coverage for abortion, the Nelson provision would take away coverage that women have now." The Nelson provision does allow plans to offer coverage, but it requires every enrollee who wants it to write a separate check for it. #x

Coming on the heels of the young Spanish designer's disastrous collaboration with Hollywood bad girl Lindsay Lohan last season, Monday's display was felt like a missed opportunity for Archs to shine.
Archs threw last season's collection together in a matter of weeks following the departure of the then-designer, one-time wunderkind Esteban Cortazar, Diamond Grinding Wheelwho reportedly quit in a huff after the label's then-president Mounir Moufarrige informed him of Lohan's appointment as "artistic director."
In the latest chapter of the dramatic saga of the house of Ungaro, #xMoufarrige — a Lebanese businessman who has made a career of resuscitating dusty old labels — stepped down late last year.
Lohan, it was reported, remained under contract with the house, although news reports Monday quoted Ungaro's owner as saying the label has no further ties with the actress.
The "Freaky Friday" star didn't deign to attend Monday's Ungaro show — although she did attend British madcap John Galliano's riotous display on Sunday evening and the Kenzo display later Monday.
Last season, the Ungaro presentation culminated in a near-riot, #xas hundreds of journalists and TV crews descended on the backstage to interview Lohan, who waxed poetic about her taste in clothes and just how much the collaboration meant to her.Diamond Grinding Wheel Without Lohan, Monday's was a very different scene, with just a handful of reporters sticking around to interview Archs.

The packages of bacon base contain as an ingredient the specific Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein (HVP), which was previously recalled, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.
Due to potential Salmonella contamination, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a recall of the HVP product on March 4, 2010. Although the HVP has already been recalled, as announced by FDA, the bacon base product packages bear the USDA mark of inspection on the outside of the case.Fish oil softgel A recall of this product was warranted due to the determination that the HVP ingredient was added after Salmonella prevention steps were applied.The product subject to recall includes: 1-lb. plastic cups of "MINOR'S BACON BASE."
Each package contains code numbers "92815489," "93095489," or "93385489" as well as the case code "00 074826 08606 7-00 G 11003264." Each case contains 6 cups and bears establishment number "1045" inside the USDA mark of inspection. The RTE product was produced on Oct. 8, 2009, Nov. 5, 2009, and Dec. 4,beads, 2009.
The RTE product was distributed nationwide to distributors and restaurants. FSIS has received no reports of illnesses associated with the consumption of these products. Individuals concerned about an illness should contact a physician.#x
According to FDA's March 4, 2010 release, FDA conducted an investigation after a customer of an FDA regulated firm reported finding Salmonella in the HVP ingredient. This resulted in the subsequent recall of the contaminated products.

It doesn’t look like a car, and it doesn’t look like it would fly, but energy saving lampwhat is believed to be the world’s oldest “roadable aircraft” #xis for sale.
The antique was built in 1934 by Frank Skroback and at the very minimum provides proof that people have long dreamed of cars that can be flown like airplanes. Or are they airplanes that can be driven like cars? No matter, because whatever you call it, it’s being auctioned this weekend in Atlanta.
In addition to the wild machine, the winning bidder scores extensive documentation, including the 1921 patent on the design and correspondence demonstrating Skroback’s attempt to sell his vehicle.
This isn’t the first flying carenergy saving lamp to hit the block. A Taylor Aerocar was auctioned more than a year ago. The Taylor is probably the most famous — and successful — example of an aircraft you can drive. Or car you can fly. Unlike the Aerocar,Buy in Global, nobody can seem to find proof of Skroback’s vehicle ever taking flight. It looks like little more than a fuselage with six small wings attached.
Red Baron’s Antiques, which is selling the plane, says it is 21 feet long, and each wing has a 7-foot span. Those wings look like they may come up a bit short in providing enough lift. But even if the wings could lift the stubby fuselage off the ground, a lack of any substantial vertical control surfaces would likely mean controlled flight would be tricky at best. There are some small rudder-like appendages on the rear wings, but they hardly look big enough to provide any sort of directional stability.
No word on what the engine is, but with the the obvious drag and small wings#x, our guess is that it had better be more powerful than it appears if this thing has any hope of even getting the tail wheel off the ground. It’s safe to say the guys at Terrafugia have nothing to worry aboutenergy saving lamp, in terms of somebody putting Skroback’s contraption into production.
