How We Got Everyone Focused on Cash Flow
How We Got Everyone Focused on Cash Flow
How We Got Everyone Focused on Cash Flow
In my last post I talked about how, every year, Safety barricadeswe pick a critical number #xor ratio to improve. This year, we’re focusing on cash flow. The idea is to pick a metric that we’ve been doing poorly on, compared with our competition, and turn it around. We do that by tying everyone’s bonus plan to our performance.
We set up the plan in such a way as to allow people to receive a portion of their bonus each quarter. By doing this, we provide both motivation and instant gratification. Most programs are designed to just pay out the bonus when the company closes it books for the year. The problem with that approach is that people wait until the third or fourth quarter to start making changes because that’s when they begin to think about getting their bonus. It’s human nature to put things off until something gets close. We found a way around that.
Let’s say that someone’s bonus would be 15 percent of his or her annual salary, including overtime. As an example, let’s say the bonus would be $15,000. Well, if the company meets its goal early when it comes to the critical number, say in February, we would pay 10 percent of the bonus pool ($1,500) at the end of March. If Safety barricadeswe stay on track, we would pay an additional 20 percent ($3,000) at the end of the second quarter, an additional 30 percent ($4,Pearl earrings,500) for the third quarter, and finally, whatever we need to pay that gets us to 100 percent ($6,000, in this case) at the end of the year.
We structured it this way to give people a taste along the way — to keep the critical number at the top of everyone’s mind from the very beginning. If we don’t hit the target until the end of the year, though, the associates still get paid 100 percent of their bonus. At the same time, if we hit our target in the first quarter, but fall off at the end of the year, we still pay out that 10 percent. We won’t take away something the associates #xhave already earned. Sure, we’re gambling by doing this, but we’ve also decreased our risks Safety barricadesby making the bonus small on the front end and increasing it over time.

Health-Care Bill’s Passage Faces New Hurdle, Republicans Say
March 12 (Bloomberg) -- Republicans said they won a parliamentary victory as they try to fight Democrats’ efforts to pass legislation to overhaul the U.S. health-care system.
Republicans said President Barack Obama has to sign a Senate health-care bill into law before the House and Senate can approve changes to it under a process called reconciliation.#x The Senate parliamentarian told Republicans that a reconciliation bill has to “make changes in law,” Diamond toolssaid Don Stewart, a spokesman for Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.
“This would be another headwind for Democrats in the House” who oppose provisions in the Senate bill, said John Sullivan, a health-care analyst at Boston-based Leerink Swann & Co. “Their biggest fear has been that they vote for the Senate version and they never get the relief they’re looking for.”
Jim Manley, a spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada, declined to comment.
The prospect of longer odds for passage sent U.S. stocks up yesterday, reversing earlier losses. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index rose 0.4 percent. The S&P 500 Managed Health Care Index climbed 1.6 percent, led by Bethesda, Maryland-based Coventry Health Care Inc., which rose 3.4 percent.
“I would expect that this would put a big barrier to this moving forward,” said Ana Gupte, a health-care analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. in New York. “I would not expect the House” to pass the Senate bill, she said.
Pushing Democrats
Reconciliation, which requires a simple majority vote in the Senate, is at issue because Democrats are trying to find a way to complete their work on health care now that they control only 59 of the 100 seats in the chamber.#x Senate Democrats passed their original bill in December with 60 votes, Diamond toolsthe number generally required to push through major legislation.
Obama is asking the House to pass the Senate bill as well as another measure to make changes to it under reconciliation, a process designed for budget items. The Senate would then also approve the changes under reconciliation.
The problem is that House Democrats object to some parts of the 10-year,samurai swords, $875 billion Senate bill, so they are seeking assurance that the package of changes will also become law. They wanted Obama to hold off signing the Senate bill until the reconciliation measure passed both chambers.

Mercedes Ordered to Pay $482,000 for Lemon
A judge has ordered Mercedes-Benz USA LLC to pay $482,000 in damages and legal fees to a Wisconsin customer who was sold a defective car and not given a refund on time.
Vince Megna,#x a Milwaukee lawyer who represents the customer, High pressure sodium lampsaid he believes the judgment is the largest involving a single car under a state "lemon law," which protect consumers who are sold junk cars.
Mercedes-Benz spokeswoman Donna Boland said the company, a unit of the German car maker Daimler AG, is disappointed the judge overturned an earlier verdict in favor of the company. The spat over the 2005 Mercedes-Benz E 320 has already dragged on more than four years, and the company's lawyer on Friday asked the court to put the judgment on hold pending an appeal.
While states have a variety of lemon laws,Grow lights, Wisconsin's is one of the strongest. It allows customers who buy cars that don't run or can't be repaired to demand a replacement or refund. Manufacturers have 30 days to respond and can be ordered to pay double the purchase price plus legal fees for violating the law.
Bob Silverman, a prominent lemon law attorney in Ambler, Pa. who was not involved in the case, agreed it was one of the largest judgments for a car he's seen and was an important victory for consumers.
"This one result is very important to the entire auto industry," Silverman said. "It teaches them a lesson they ought to comply with the law promptly or they are going to have to pay in the end."
Despite the pending judgment, customer Marco Marquez,#x a 37-year-old businessman from Waukesha, called the case "a complete nightmare" and said he was still waiting for his money back. High pressure sodium lampOnce a big fan of Mercedes-Benz who has owned several of its cars, he now says he'll never buy another.
It all started when Marquez, who owns Mexican restaurants in Waukesha and Janesville, purchased the E 320 for $56,000 from a Milwaukee dealership in 2005.
Almost immediately, the car often would not start. The battery was replaced multiple times, but the problem continued. After several repair attempts, the dealership said the problem could not be fixed.
Marquez hired Megna, who sent the company a refund demand in October 2005. After a few weeks, an employee tried to talk Marquez into taking a replacement instead. He declined and again asked for a refund. At one point, the employee said he should fire his lawyer and deal with them on his own.
The company finally agreed to the refund, but failed to provide one within 30 days. On the 31st day, Megna filed the lawsuit on behalf of Marquez seeking double damages and attorneys' fees.
Mercedes-Benz has acknowledged the car was defective, #xbut for years has accused Marquez of acting in bad faith.
The company says an employee asked Marquez for information about his auto loan on the 30th day so the refund could be granted, but Marquez failed to follow through.High pressure sodium lamp Megna said Mercedes-Benz had the information it needed for the refund but was stalling.

The Great Prostate Mistake

The Great Prostate Mistake
EACH year some 30 million American men undergo testing for prostate-specific antigen, GPS trackeran enzyme made by the prostate. Approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 1994, #xthe P.S.A. test is the most commonly used tool for detecting prostate cancer.
The test’s popularity has led to a hugely expensive public health disaster. It’s an issue I am painfully familiar with — I discovered P.S.A. in 1970. As Congress searches for ways to cut costs in our health care system, a significant savings could come from changing the way the antigen is used to screen for prostate cancer.
Americans spend an enormous amount testing for prostate cancer. The annual bill for P.S.A. screening is at least $3 billion, with much of it paid for by Medicare and the Veterans Administration.
Prostate cancer may get a lot of press, but consider the numbers: American men have a 16 percent lifetime chance of receiving a diagnosis of prostate cancer, but only a 3 percent chance of dying from it. GPS trackerThat’s because the majority of prostate cancers grow slowly. In other words, #xmen lucky enough to reach old age are much more likely to die with prostate cancer than to die of it.
Even then, the test is hardly more effective than a coin toss. As I’ve been trying to make clear for many years now, P.S.A. testing can’t detect prostate cancer and, more important, it can’t distinguish between the two types of prostate cancer — the one that will kill you and the one that won’t.
Instead, the test simply reveals how much of the prostate antigen a man has in his blood. Infections, over-the-counter drugs like ibuprofen, and benign swelling of the prostate can all elevate a man’s P.S.A. levels,#x but none of these factors signals cancer. Men with low readings might still harbor dangerous cancers, katana, GPS trackerwhile those with high readings might be completely healthy.

The infection rate in women, for example, was almost double the rate in men, while three times as many blacks as whites were infected, the report showed. Among those who reported having a history of 10 or more sex partners, 27 percent had herpes, compared with 4 percent of those with one lifetime sex partner, HealthDay reports.

Intel debuts six-core gaming chip
Intel has officially introduced its six-core monster for high-end gaming boxes--its first desktop chip packing that many processing cores.
As previously reported,Hydraulic Hose the Core i7- 980X Extreme Edition processor was introduced #xat the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco on Wednesday.
The chip is based on Intel's newest 32-nanometer process technology. Generally, the smaller the manufacturing process, the better the performance. Most Intel processors still use "fatter" 45-nanometer technology.
Like other Core i series processors, Hydraulic Hoseit features Hyper-Threading, which can double the number of tasks--or threads--a processor can execute. The technology, which is not offered on prior-generation Core 2 chips, #xallows a six-core processor can handle 12 threads.
Intel also introduced GPA (graphics performance analyzer) v3.0, which helps PC game developers analyze and optimize game performance. The updated development platform supports multicore optimizations and includes support for DirectX 10.1 and 64-bit game executables, Intel said.
Intel also recently rolled out Core i3, i5, and i7 processors for laptops, which can take advantage of GPA v3.0.
GDC attendees can see demonstrations of games enhanced using Intel GPA and running on Intel's newest HD Graphics, including such titles as Atari Star Trek Online,网站优化, Electronic Arts Tiger Woods Golf, Hydraulic HoseIntel said.#x Developers can download the new Intel GPA suite of software tools here.

Oldest Known Flying ‘Car’ Up for Auction
It doesn’t look like a car, and it doesn’t look like it would fly, but energy saving lampwhat is believed to be the world’s oldest “roadable aircraft” #xis for sale.
The antique was built in 1934 by Frank Skroback and at the very minimum provides proof that people have long dreamed of cars that can be flown like airplanes. Or are they airplanes that can be driven like cars? No matter, because whatever you call it, it’s being auctioned this weekend in Atlanta.
In addition to the wild machine, the winning bidder scores extensive documentation, including the 1921 patent on the design and correspondence demonstrating Skroback’s attempt to sell his vehicle.
This isn’t the first flying carenergy saving lamp to hit the block. A Taylor Aerocar was auctioned more than a year ago. The Taylor is probably the most famous — and successful — example of an aircraft you can drive. Or car you can fly. Unlike the Aerocar, nobody can seem to find proof of Skroback’s vehicle ever taking flight. It looks like little more than a fuselage with six small wings attached.
Red Baron’s Antiques, hats, which is selling the plane, says it is 21 feet long, and each wing has a 7-foot span. Those wings look like they may come up a bit short in providing enough lift. But even if the wings could lift the stubby fuselage off the ground, a lack of any substantial vertical control surfaces would likely mean controlled flight would be tricky at best. There are some small rudder-like appendages on the rear wings, but they hardly look big enough to provide any sort of directional stability.
No word on what the engine is, but with the the obvious drag and small wings#x, our guess is that it had better be more powerful than it appears if this thing has any hope of even getting the tail wheel off the ground. It’s safe to say the guys at Terrafugia have nothing to worry aboutenergy saving lamp, in terms of somebody putting Skroback’s contraption into production.
