Probe widens in hunt for killers of 3 tied to U.S. consulate
In the deadly city of Juarez,Safety barrier people are slaughtered daily — in their homes and in the street, #xat drug clinics and youth parties, at funeral homes and outside neighborhood schools.
But the killing of Lesley Enriquez, who worked at the U.S. Consulate and was four months pregnant, her husband, Arthur Redelfs, a corrections officer in El Paso, and Jorge Alberto Salcido Ceniceros, whose wife worked at the consulate, brought the murderous mayhem even closer to home in United States than perhaps it's ever been.
Two of the victims were U.S. citizens, one of them a U.S. government employee. The apparently coordinated attacks took place in broad daylight as the three were leaving a consulate *****ren's party. Three *****ren were with them when the two separate assaults took place.
Now, the international investigation has expanded to both sides of the border in the search for clues about the killers as well as their motives.
“There are leads to follow up on this side, Safety barrierwitnesses to be interviewed,”#xsaid Andrea Simmons, spokeswoman for the FBI in El Paso across from Juarez. “We are going through intelligence now.”
Mexican state and federal authorities are in charge of the investigation, as blood was spilled on Mexican soil, but an array of U.S. agencies are backing them up.
The killings Saturday came just days before President Felipe Calderon's visit to the city today,Grow lights, his third trip in two months. Both President Barack Obama and Calderon spoke out strongly against the assaults, which have triggered a rash of theories, but scant information so far.
State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley downplayed any suggestion the cartels or hitmen are targeting U.S. diplomats: “I'd be leery about jumping to any conclusions at this point.”
He did say the department will be reviewing security procedures at facilities all along the border, “and if additional resources are needed, whether they be American resources or Mexican resources, then we'll have that conversation.”
Among the possibilities being examined are that the victims were attacked in a case of mistaken identity, FBI spokeswoman Simmons said.
“Obviously, we are looking at all levels of intelligence that might be of assistance in the investigation,” she said.
People who attended the party are being questioned in the U.S.,#x but Simmons, would not say whether agents are talking to members of the Barrio Azteca gang, Safety barrierwhich Mexican authorities have said may have had a hand in the killing.
