You wouldn't think this was possible, but Glenn Beck had apparently never actually sat down and listened to Bruce Springsteen's "Born In The USA," never heard the lyrics, #xnever formed a familiarity with the song's storied history in American politics, until this week, I guess? Anyway,Vintage jerseys now that he's heard that the song isn't some glorious tongue-bath to American exceptionalism, he's denouncing it on the radio. Per Lindsay Beyerstein:

'Born down in a dead man's town/ the first kick I took is when I hit the ground/ you end up like a dog that's been beat too much/ so you spend half your life just covering up...' It’s My Party, and You Have to Answer
HERE’S an etiquette experiment for you: Replica jerseysE-mail an invitation for a party, one month out, to 45 friends. Request an R.S.V.P. Provide a follow-up e-mail message, #xtwo weeks later, politely reminding them to get back to you.
How many will?
My experiment arose from plans for an evening of food, drink and literature, with readings by myself and two other writers, at a restaurant. Not exactly a drop-in-if-you’re-around kind of thing, so I asked friends to R.S.V.P. My initial message brought in a dozen responses, and the follow-up a few more, but days before the event I had a paltry 23. Not 23 who planned to come, but 23 who had bothered to respond. Half my invitees had blown me off. Why? I wasn’t peddling life insurance, after all.
Asking around, I discovered that the phenomenon is widespread.Replica jerseys One friend of mine e-mailed invitations to a baby shower, and a third of the recipients failed to respond. Another announced a happy hour at her house and received a dozen yeses — only to find her party besieged by 35 people.
What’s preventing us from executing this basic social task?#x Is it the medium? Do Evites somehow not feel like “real” invitations? Is it our busy lives, so overbooked and overwhelmed we’ve drawn up the castle gates? Don’t invite me out this month, I’m ensconced! Or is it simple rudeness? Try as I might to understand, I kept feeling dissed.
What’s clear is how hard the R.S.V.P. rubs against the grain of contemporary life. In requesting people to anchor a plan in the distant future of a month hence, you are demanding a kind of navigation that Americans increasingly do not practice. We prefer to remain flexy, solidifying our plans incrementally as the date approaches. Let’s talk tomorrow. I’ll call you when I’m on the road. Cellphones in hand,Grow lights, we microadjust our schedules as they unfold around us. We’re like the air traffic controllers of our own lives.
It wasn’t always so. A while ago I made a lunch date with an elderly couple. As the day approached with no subsequent corroboration, I felt a strange excitement. Would all three of us just show up? We did, and I realized that what I felt was a small nostalgic thrill over social arrangements that seemed straight out of Jane Austen.
But back to my party. The day before the big event, I sent a final e-mail message, Replica jerseysthanking “the half of you who responded for helping keep the dying art of the R.S.V.P. alive.”#x This irked missive flushed out a final 10 hangdog respondents. But there remained a gang of 12 — the dirty dozen, the truly hardcore, fanatical nonresponders — who couldn’t even be shamed into R.S.V.P.ing.

ObamaCare and the 'Buzzsaw' of Opposition
A little over a year ago, aromatic when President Obama first took up health-care reform, Republicans reached out to him in the hopes of working together on solutions that would lower health-care costs for families and small businesses. A bipartisan bill focused on lower costs could have been sent to the president's desk last year, #xand it would have received the support of the American people.
For instance, this month the president announced his support for additional reforms to crack down on waste, fraud and abuse in Medicare and Medicaid. This is something we can and should be doing already. Do we really need to pass a $2.5 trillion spending bill, raise taxes, and slash Medicare to implement it?
In other areas, Democrats have taken solid Republican reforms—such as putting an end to junk lawsuits and allowing patients to purchase insurance across state lines—and watered them down to a point where they cannot be effectively implemented. Still, we could have used this common ground as a foundation for a bipartisan, step-by-step approach to health-care reform.
Unfortunately, the White House and congressional Democrats are still insisting on their massive, 2,700-page bill that includes higher premiums, $500 billion in higher taxes, aromatic and $500 billion in cuts to seniors' Medicare. That's not reform.
If there's one thing the American people didn't want, #xit was for us to make health care more bureaucratic and expensive. The Obama administration's own scorekeeper at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services says overall health spending will go up by more than $200 billion under the Democrats' bill. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) also says federal health spending will rise.
The CBO also says health insurance premiums for millions of families across the country will go up by as much as 13% as a result of all the new government mandates contained in this bill—and continue to rise at the current unsustainable rate for nearly everyone else. And it's all going add to the mountain of debt we are already piling onto our kids and grandkids.
Democrats in Washington are well aware of the mess they've made. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) recently revealed her party's closing argument for health-care reform by stating, #x"We have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it, away from the fog of the controversy"—as if the steadfast public opposition to this bill is one giant misunderstanding. It's not. The American people have been laser-focused on this bill for a year, aromaticand have only become more opposed to this job-killing monstrosity.

Google ‘99% certain’ to shut China engine
Google has drawn up detailed plans for the closure of its Chinese search engine and is now “99.9 per cent” certain to go ahead as talks over censorship with the Chinese authorities have reached an apparent impasse, Potpourriaccording to a person familiar with the company’s thinking.
In a hardening of positions on both sides,#x the Chinese government also on Friday threw down a direct public challenge to the US search company, with a warning that it was not prepared to compromise on internet censorship to stop Google leaving.
The signs that Google was on the brink of closing Google.cn, its local search service in China, came two months after it promised to stop bowing to censorship there. But while a decision could be made very soon, the company is likely to take some time to follow through with the plan as it seeks an orderly closure and takes steps to protect local employees from retaliation by the authorities, the person familiar with its position said.
Google is also seeking ways to keep its other operations in China going, although some executives fear that a backlash from the Chinese authorities could make it almost impossible to keep a presence in the country.
When the search giant first promised to end censorship in response to what it claimed were a series of cyber-attacks mounted from inside China, many China-watchers warned that its public defiance of Beijing would provoke a stern response.
On Friday, Li Yizhong, minister for industry and information technology,#x said: Potpourri“If [Google] takes steps that violate Chinese laws, that would be unfriendly, that would be irresponsible, and they would have to bear the consequences.”
One person close to the search company, meanwhile, said that its senior executives remained “adamant” about ending the censorship. The company has also ruled out keeping the search service going by handing majority control, or even the entire business, to a local player, this person said.
Google’s executives have made it clear that they still hope to stay in the country, whatever the fate of Google.cn. “It’s very important to know we are not pulling out of China,” Eric Schmidt, Google’s chief executive, told the Financial Times at the time. “We have a good business in China. This is about the censorship rules, not anything else.”
The company’s other operations, which pre-date the launch of Google.cn four years ago, include its research centre in Beijing and a sales force that sells advertising on the Chinese-language Google.com search service, based outside China,网站优化, to advertisers inside the country.
Mr Li encouraged Google to continue its operations in the country. #x“[Google] has taken 30 per cent of the Chinese search market.
“If you don’t leave, China will welcome that, if you don’t leave,Potpourri it will be beneficial for the development of the internet in China.”

THE most striking thing about “The Runaways,” a new film about the trailblazing bad-girl rock band from the 1970s that spawned Joan Jett, is how authentic it feels.artificial apple The clubs are properly scuzzy. The dialogue is properly raunchy. The actors can properly sing. The hair is fried and feathered, #xthe skin spotty from weeks of running on little but potato chips and estrogen. From the adrenaline rush of performing to the monotony of rehearsal, it’s a vivid snapshot of life on the road for ambitious teenagers who are constantly told that rock ’n’ roll “is the sport of men.” (And that’s their own manager talking.)
One reason may be that the movie is partly based on “Neon Angel: A Memoir of a Runaway” (Harper Collins), a newly revamped autobiography by the group’s lead singer Cherie Currie, whose chillingly quick self-destruction is relived through Dakota Fanning. Another may be that Ms. Currie and Ms. Jett (played by Kristen Stewart) put the actors through hard-rock boot camp for several weeks before filming. And Floria Sigismondi, the writer and director, artificial apple has “been around music all my life,” as she said in an interview in a hotel room in Midtown. #xAlong with making videos for artists like David Bowie (Ms. Currie’s musical hero) and the White Stripes, she’s worked in clubs and gone on tour with her husband’s band, the Living Things. “I wanted it all to look real. I wanted bed head. I wanted freckles and pimples,” she said of the film,NCR parts, her first feature. The words she kept repeating on the set were “raw” and “gritty.”
The rock lifestyle has been notoriously difficult to get right on film. The mainstream fantasy — sex, drugs, hard-core partying — usually trumps the more tedious reality of musicians striving for success but often becoming trapped by it. The result has been films that end up either bloated and cartoonish (see the American Indian shaman following Jim Morrison around “The Doors”), sweetly sanitized (see the intercourse-avoiding groupies of “Almost Famous”) or as road-to-ruin predictable as “Behind the Music.” But since 2002, when the hyperactive#x “24 Hour Party People” captured the dance-oriented music scene in ’70s and ’80s Manchester, England, there has been a trickle of rock biopics that get the milieu and the music just right, like “Control,” the story of Joy Division, and “What We Do Is Secret,” artificial applethe story of the Germs.

“Paparazzi,” she said to me with a smile, a shrug and a little laugh — she was clearly tickled by the attention, maybe because she tended to get less of it than the event’s major players, even though she was a repeat performer. “They always hang out here.”
“Here” was a patch of squat dunes between the hotel and a fleet of electric golf carts poised to carry her and other headliners to the tents, so that they didn’t have to struggle through the Miami sand or melt in the Miami sun, which shined down like a spotlight in these last days of February.

Birds in arid regions and forests show less vulnerability to climate change, but the report says many species struggling in arid regions now, including the endangered golden-cheeked warbler and black-capped vireo in Texas, could be further imperiled by shifting climate conditions.

Those rises have raised alarm in Taiwan, the self-ruled island China Rebel Flagsclaims as its own, the rest of the region, and especially in the United States,Mold, the world's only superpower with a military reach that far exceeds China's.
In a report to Congress published last month, the Pentagon said it was concerned by China's missile buildup and increasingly advanced capabilities in the Pacific region.
Yet while China's People's Liberation Army (PLA) looks increasingly fierce on paper, analysts -- and even Chinese army officers -- say it will be a long time before the country has the means to effectively challenge U.S. power, if ever.
"What is their readiness level? How effective are these things they've developed themselves?" said Drew Thompson, of the Nixon Center, a think tank in Washington.
"Is their indigenous technology really working, or does it simply exist like a lot of things in the Chinese system, on paper? I would posit it probably leans more toward the latter."
After a spike in tension #xthat has stoked nationalist Rebel FlagsChinese calls for a hard shove back against U.S. influence, some PLA officers are also trying to discourage chest-thumping.

Anthony Digati, 52, of Chino, California, was arrested and charged with a single felony count of extortion through interstate communications, according to federal prosecutors in Manhattan. NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Until now, a scant number of top notch clinical trials decorative fruithave evaluated whether sodium picosulfate -- the active ingredient in numerous over-the-counter laxatives -- is safe and effective.
Dr. Stefan Mueller-Lissner#x, at Charite-Universitatsmedizin Berlin, in Germany, and colleagues conducted such a trial and found sodium picosulfate both safe and effective for chronic constipation.
Sodium picosulfate,Pearl earrings, found in laxative pills and also in oral drinks that purge intestines and bowels in preparation for a colonoscopy exam, was identified as a laxative long before drugs had to be studied to become licensed, Mueller-Lissner explained in an email to Reuters Health.
Hence, sodium picosulfate lacks decorative fruit"a nice portfolio of controlled clinical trials" for researchers to compare with those of newer laxatives.
Mueller-Lissner's team began to address this oversight by testing sodium picosulfate versus a similar-tasting and looking inactive placebo in adults who had constipation for 13 years on average.
For 4 weeks, 233 participants took 18 sodium picosulfate drops (about 10 milligrams) by mouth each evening while the remaining 134 took 18 drops of the placebo. None knew which liquid they were taking, the researchers note in the American Journal of Gastroenterology.
Anyone with excessive diarrhea or severe abdominal discomfort, which can happen with laxatives, could cut their dose in half after consulting with a study investigator. Half of those taking the sodium picosulfate-containing laxative, but none taking placebo, did cut their dose by the end of the 4 weeks. The researchers provided decorative fruitlaxative suppositories #xfor use by anyone without a bowel movement for more than 72 hours.

It's probably a good sign when a presentation opens by informing attendeesPVC Tarpaulin that it may kill them if they're prone to seizures. Much like his games, Jonatan "Cactus" S?derstr?m's GDC #xtalk was filled with flashing lights, garish colors, clips from David Lynch movies, and the feeling that somebody is having a joke at our expense. It's a good joke, though, even if he didn't follow up his awkward,Mold, adorably nervous foreigner act with a superb Elvis Impersonation. Mostly on account of the fact that he actually is an adorable, awkwardly nervous foreigner, but I was still waiting for it. Anyway, aside from the bizarrity and weird movie summaries ("Dr. Strangelove is actually my favorite comedy of all time... or something. You don't have to laugh at it, though.") he actually namedropped a lot of games that are thematically linked through their incomprehensibility and enjoyable bastardry.
First, and most obviously, I should point out Cactus's own oeuvrePVC Tarpaulin. From today's introduction: "Cactus is kind of like a firehouse, except insead of water he sprays games." He's got a crapload of stuff on his site. It's occasionally brilliant and always just plain weird as hell, but particular attention should be drawn to first-person crazyfest Mondo Medicals, as well as Cactus Arcade, which gathers together all his most notable contributions to the science of making people ask what the fuck is going on.
Messhoff got his props, particularly for Randy Balma: Municipal Abortionist, which clearly follows in the Lynchian tradition. Or, as Cactus said "I think that might not make much sense, but it's good to have a look at it." I think it made me throw up a few times. Not because it's gross or anything, but because it was spinning around and flashing a lot. Also, it was full of babies#x. They have PVC Tarpaulinthat effect on me. Check out Punishment and Flywrench while you're there.
