I Was Am-Bushed On MSNBC Over Iraq
I was invited on MSNBC the other day to discuss Karl Rove’s Custom hockey jerseysbook with anchor Davis Shuster and journalist David Corn of Mother Jones magazine and the author of “The Lies of George W. Bush” only to be am-BUSHED with the worn allegation by the left that President Bush lied his way into war with Iraq.#x
The left is consumed with charges that somehow Bush and his “gang” were able to bamboozle Congress, the U.N., and everyone else on the planet with regard to why it was necessary to remove Saddam Hussein from power and bring him to justice. Both Shuster and Corn ganged up on me charging that Bush lied and would not let me get a word in edge wise. They interrupted and would not let me finish a thought. In a desperate attempt to “prove” he was right, Custom hockey jerseysCorn offered to bet me $1,000.00 that he could “prove” Bush lied. And, who was going to be the judge? Yep, you guessed it, David Shuster. Does that not sound like an impartial and “fair and balanced” wager? I think not.
All this in light of the fact that just last month, Vice President Joe Biden went on Larry King and bragged that “Iraq could be one of the greatest achievements of this administration.” #xThis from a man who as a US Senator was against the war and the surge and sided with many Democrats who declared in 2003 that the “war was lost.”
The left distorts the facts with regard to the lead up to the Iraq war to fit their conspiratorial theories. However here are the facts:
*November 1997: Hussein ordered all American weapons inspectors in Iraq to leave in violation of UN Security Council Resolution.
*December 1998: President Bill Clinton orders “Operation Desert Fox” a robust four day aerial bombing mission by US and UK Air Forces. This operation was in retaliation for Iraq’s failure to obey UN Security Council Resolutions and their obstruction of UN Weapons Inspections.
Clinton’s Secretary of State Madeleine Albright said the following about the attack:
"I don't think we're pretending that we can get everything,托盘, so this is - I think - we are being very honest about what our ability is. We are lessening, degrading his ability to use this. #xThe weapons of mass destruction are the threat of the future. I think the president explained very clearly to the American people that this is the threat of the 21st century. [. . .] [W]hat it means is that we know we can't get everything,Custom hockey jerseys but degrading is the right word."

Ga. court upholds key medical malpractice changes
A sharply divided Georgia Replica NHL jerseysSupreme Court on Monday upheld a key part of a sweeping 2005 law that made it more difficult for patients to win medical malpractice cases involving emergency health care providers.
The court's 4-3 ruling was a blow to plaintiff's attorneys and other critics of the legislation who argued the higher standard of proof required by the law made it almost impossible for patients injured by emergency room workers to win malpractice claims.
Critics of the law took another hit Monday when the court released a separate ruling,#x this one by a 5-2 vote, that upheld a provision that allowed one side in a lawsuit to pay the other side's legal fees in some cases. They had argued the practice could discourage many victims from bringing legitimate claims to court.
The court will likely issue a third ruling this month on a lawsuit that challenges the law's $350,000 limit on jury awards for malpractice victims' pain and suffering damages.
The lawsuit involving the emergency room provision was brought by Carol Gliemmo, who said an emergency room doctor at a Columbus hospital failed to detect a debilitating illness in April 2007 when she came in complaining of sudden pain behind her eyes.
She was released from the hospital when her blood pressure went down. But two days later her family practitioner ordered a CT scan, which revealed a brain hemorrhage that left her paralyzed. #xHer family then filed a lawsuit claiming the doctor was negligent in failing to order a test that would have detected the brain aneurysm.
But the legislation requires the Gliemmos to prove emergency room doctors acted with "gross negligence," a standard that forces attorneys to prove they knowingly mistreated their patients. Replica NHL jerseysThe family claimed the requirement was unconstitutional, saying it's a nearly insurmountable hurdle.
The court's majority opinion,托盘, penned by Justice George Carley, found that it was "entirely logical" for lawmakers to approve the legislation in hopes of stemming the rising cost of medical malpractice insurance. He was joined by Justices P. Harris Hines, Harold Melton and David Nahmias.
A dissent written by Justice Robert Benham criticized the new legislation for leaving patients with a "lower standard of care and a higher burden of proof." He was joined by Chief Justice Carol Hunstein and Justice Hugh P. Thompson.
The second ruling, which centered on a case involving a former Atlanta Falcons player,#x upheld a part of the law designed to discourage frivolous lawsuits with new incentives for patients to settle out of court.
The "offer of settlement" provision required some plaintiffs to pay the otherReplica NHL jerseys side's attorney's fees if they lose their case or if they win only a portion of a settlement offer.

A Camel cigarette ad may have targeted teenage girls, an antismoking group claims.
In a national survey of teens conducted soon after ads for the R.J. Reynolds brand Camel No. 9 appeared in leading women's magazines, 44% of the girls could name a favorite brand, christmas gifts based on advertising.#x Their average age was 15.
In previous surveys, about 10% fewer girls named a favorite cigarette advertisement. The increase in the latest survey was almost exclusively for the Camel brand.
The landmark 1998 Master Settlement Agreement (MSA) between states' attorneys general and the tobacco industry prohibits all tobacco marketing aimed at *****ren and teens.
Since the agreement, the smoking rate among teens has dropped dramatically, from 35% to about 20%.
R.J. Reynolds strongly denies marketing to teens, but longtime tobacco trends researcher John P. Pierce, PhD, who led the survey, disagrees.
His research was funded by the antismoking group American Legacy Foundation and the National Cancer Institute. It appears online today in Pediatrics.
"The MSA has worked. Smoking among kids is way down," he tells WebMD. #x"But the industry, and Reynolds in particular, is out there doing what they can to get people to start smoking, and they are targeting teens."

According to the antismoking group Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids, the brand's launch also included special-event giveaways including berry-flavored lip balm, cell phone jewelry and Rocker Girl wristbands.
Before the marketing campaign, no more than 13% of girls in the survey group who expressed a preference chose Camel as their favorite cigarette advertising. In the months after the Camel No. 9 ads ran, 21% identified Camel as their favorite brand, based on advertising.

Google has drawn up detailed plans for the closure of its Chinese search engine and is now “99.9 per cent” certain to go ahead as talks over censorship with the Chinese authorities have reached an apparent impasse, Potpourriaccording to a person familiar with the company’s thinking.
In a hardening of positions on both sides,#x the Chinese government also on Friday threw down a direct public challenge to the US search company, with a warning that it was not prepared to compromise on internet censorship to stop Google leaving.
The signs that Google was on the brink of closing Google.cn, its local search service in China, came two months after it promised to stop bowing to censorship there. But while a decision could be made very soon, the company is likely to take some time to follow through with the plan as it seeks an orderly closure and takes steps to protect local employees from retaliation by the authorities, the person familiar with its position said.
Google is also seeking ways to keep its other operations in China going, although some executives fear that a backlash from the Chinese authorities could make it almost impossible to keep a presence in the country.
When the search giant first promised to end censorship in response to what it claimed were a series of cyber-attacks mounted from inside China, many China-watchers warned that its public defiance of Beijing would provoke a stern response.
On Friday, Li Yizhong, minister for industry and information technology,#x said: Potpourri“If [Google] takes steps that violate Chinese laws, that would be unfriendly, that would be irresponsible, and they would have to bear the consequences.”
One person close to the search company, meanwhile, said that its senior executives remained “adamant” about ending the censorship. The company has also ruled out keeping the search service going by handing majority control, or even the entire business,Compact fluorescent lamp, to a local player, this person said.
Google’s executives have made it clear that they still hope to stay in the country, whatever the fate of Google.cn. “It’s very important to know we are not pulling out of China,” Eric Schmidt, Google’s chief executive, told the Financial Times at the time. “We have a good business in China. This is about the censorship rules, not anything else.”
The company’s other operations, which pre-date the launch of Google.cn four years ago, include its research centre in Beijing and a sales force that sells advertising on the Chinese-language Google.com search service, based outside China, to advertisers inside the country.
Mr Li encouraged Google to continue its operations in the country. #x“[Google] has taken 30 per cent of the Chinese search market.
“If you don’t leave, China will welcome that, if you don’t leave,Potpourri it will be beneficial for the development of the internet in China.”

A Google spokeswoman would neither confirm nor deny the report to Wired.com, saying only, “We can’t confirm that story.” Google also declined to elaborate on any aspect of the conflict or talks with the Chinese government.
The Financial Times said in a report on its website Google had drawn up detailed plans for closing its Chinese search engine.
The newspaper cited a person familiar with the company’s thinking as saying that, while a decision could be made very soon, Google was likely to take some time to follow through with its plans.

Google shocked business and political circles in January when it threatened to pull out of China if it could not offer an unfiltered Chinese search engine. artificial pumpkinsThe threat came after cyber attacks originating from China on it and about 30 other firms.
“If you don’t respect Chinese laws, you are unfriendly and irresponsible, and the consequences will be on you,” China’s Minister of Industry and Information Technology, Li Yizhong, told reporters on Friday in answer to a question on what China would do if Google.cn simply stopped filtering search results.
That came after the chief executive of Google, Eric Schmidt, said on Wednesday he hoped to announce soon a result to talks with Chinese authorities on offering an uncensored search engine in China.#x

Prison Mobile Phone Debate Jammed Up in the System
On paper, Casual productit’s a no-brainer: Prisoners have mobile phones they are using to run gangs, call friends, and intimidate witnesses. Tech companies have the equipment to jam the phones by flooding the airwaves,#x and prisons want to use them. But the 1930s law setting up the nation’s telecommunications bureaucracy makes such jamming illegal.
That drives Howard Melamed, the CEO of CellAntenna, crazy. Witnesses are dying and gangs are flourishing because Congress has yet to put the Safe Prison’s Act bill on President Obama’s desk, Melamed argues. His company, which mostly sells tech to expand cell coverage inside buildings, also does some business in jammers. And over the last seven years, he’s become one of the most public faces of the campaign to rid prisons of rogue cell phones.
“Criminals behind bars are doing what they do best which is break the law,” Melamed said. “People are being killed by criminals using cell phones in prisons to arrange hits on witnesses.”
It’s not an insignificant problem. Mobile phones make their way into prisons by visitors smuggling them in — in whole or in part — or from prison employees who can make thousands of dollars per cell phone. Casual productSince cell phones aren’t explicitly considered contraband under federal law,NCR parts, there’s not much punishment for employees who sneak them in. California found more than 4,000 phones in 2009, while the feds found close to 2,000 in their prisons and work camps.#x In a recent case in Maryland, a number of employees were indicted after the DEA wiretapped a jailed gang leader, catching him complaining about having to settle for salmon and shrimp, instead of lobster, to go with his champagne.
There seems to be some agreement by parties on polar ends of the spectrum that something should be done, but none on what that should be. Activists like Melamed argue that creating a sort of dampening field that prevents all cell phone calls isn’t the blunt force approach it is portrayed as being, and that granular approaches like increasing the criminal penalties of bringing a cell phone into a prison, and targeting rogue cell signals, is too expensive for prisons and the state budgets that fund them.
Then there is the matter of legislative priorities: Casual productEven if health care reform is voted out of the Congress soon, #xafter a year of sucking all the air out of the room, jobs and the economy (or a prolonged period of partisan gridlock) are on the horizon.

US unveils new broadband plan
The US government has unveiled a new plan for high-speed internet access that will give the US “the fastest and most extensive wireless network in the world,” #xaccording to an executive summary of the proposal released on Monday by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Security barriers
The plan formulated by the FCC heralds a revolution in US communications by recognizing broadband internet as the country’s major telecommunications platform, after decades in which the telephone and television broadcast networks held the top spots.
The new plan sets a goal of assuring that by 2020 at least 100 million homes have affordable access to so-called broadband networks that allow them to download data from the Internet at speeds of at least 100 megabits per second - 20 times or more faster than most people get today.
The proposal, which will be sent Tuesday to Congress, Security barriersseeks to put super-fast Internet access of 1 gigabit per second in public facilities such as schools, hospitals and government buildings in every community.
The FCC wants to reallocate a large slice of radio-frequency spectrum currently controlled by TV and radio networks to use for high-speed Internet service,#x regarded as a much cheaper and quicker way of spreading broadband service than laying wire of fiber cables - particularly in rural areas.
“The National Broadband Plan is a 21st-century road map to spur economic growth and investment, create jobs, educate our *****ren, protect our citizens and engage in our democracy,” said FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski, a Democrat and former technology executive appointed by President Obama last year.
“It’s an action plan, and action is necessary to meet the challenges of global competitiveness and harness the power of broadband to help address so many vital national issues.” Projected to cost 12 billion-16 billion dollars, the plan would be paid for with 7.2 billion dollars allocated for that purpose in the 787-billion-dollar economic stimulus plan passed last year, and by money collected from wireless spectrum auctions.
Several technology groups praised the plan.
The FCC has “produced a balanced, hats, comprehensive and forward- looking plan that should serve the country well,” Gigi Sohn, president of Public Knowledge, a digital rights group,#x told PC World.
“The US has long needed such a plan to keep pace with other countries, Security barriersand this plan, if implemented, will accomplish that objective.” Gigi Sohn added.

Chris Dodd will introduce the Senate Banking Committee’s #xfinancial reform billPearl ring today. The New York Times walks us through the provisions, which include attempts to limit the influence of Wall Street on the New York Federal Reserve (including banning bank presidents from the board), and a consumer-protection agency will set rules for financial products like credit cards and mortgages. The bill also extends the Fed’s reach to interconnected, nonbank financial companies. The legislation attempts to appeal to both sides of the aisle. For example, the bill gives state attorney generals authority to sue those who violate the consumer agency’s rules, but a council of regulators could reject proposed regulations by a two-thirds majority vote. Nevertheless, expect a contentious fight. Republicans are carefully pushing back on the legislation, and Democrats expect to push it through on their own. Senators from both parties cite the rancorous atmosphere created by the health care debate. “Never did I realize that health care would affect financial regulation," says Bob Corker.

Google Inc, the world's biggest search engine, has been in a two-month standoff with Beijing over restrictions on the Internet and Google's claims that it and other companies were hit by hacking from within China.
The company's chief executive, Eric Schmidt, said last week he hoped to announce soon an outcome from talks with Chinese officials on offering an uncensored search engine in that country of 384 million Internet users.
Many experts have doubted China's ruling Communist Party would compromise on censorship, and on the weekend the Financial Times reported the talks had reached an impasse and Google was "99.9 percent" certain to shut its Chinese search engine, Google.cn.
