Washington, Cal finish on high note
The Pac-10 tournament final Saturday between Washington and Cal saw 22 lead changes and 12 ties, and mirrored the constantly fluctuating season the downtrodden conference had. #xThe way both teams played, however, Rebel Flagsbelied the national perception the league was only sending one team to the NCAA tournament.
While Washington (24-9) earned the conference’s automatic bid with a 79-75 win, there is no question Cal (23-10) is just as deserving. After splitting the season series, both seemed to split baskets from the opening tip in what was easily the best game of an otherwise forgettable tournament played in front of a mostly empty arena the past four days.
As maligned as the Pac-10 has been this season, it at least saved its best performance for a national television audience. It would be hard to find a better tournament final from start to finish than the one Washington and Cal put on at the Staples Center.
Elston Turner's five straight points, including a 3-pointer, put Washington ahead for good, 71-68, with 3:22 remaining.
After depending on the play of leading scorers Jerome Randle and Patrick Christopher all season, the Bears were forced to look elsewhere as their talented senior duo had combined for just 10 points with 9:30 left in the game. Fellow seniors Jamal Boykin, who finished with 20 points and 14 rebounds, and Theo Robertson, who had 25 points, were the only reasons Cal was in the game.
“He got two fouls early which is a little unusual,” said Cal coach Mike Montgomery of Randle. “We had him [Randle] out of the game for a fair portion trying to get him back and forth and not get a third foul.#x He’s small so they can post him with a variety of different people. It caused a problem, no question.”
Washington guard Isaiah Thomas, who was named the tournament’s most valuable player, scored 16 points and smiled when asked about guarding Randle. The Huskies made it known they believed Washington forward Quincy Pondexter, who scored 18 points, should have been named the conference’s player of the year over Randle.Rebel Flags
“I feel [Pondexter] should have won player of the year and I feel like we should have won the Pac-10 championship,” said Thomas. “We brought all the motivation we could to get this win.”
This was the marquee final the Pac-10 had hoped for in the preseason when Cal and Washington were ranked in the top 15 in the country in both polls. As the season progressed it became impossible to predict which teams would play in the Pac-10 tournament final.
“Some of the losses we got early on in the league hurt the perception,” Montgomery said. “Washington just really lost Brockman from last year. They’re pretty good. I don’t know how there could have been any question about Washington getting in. But if there was, it’s obviously erased. Now we just have to wait and see if they give Arizona State a tumble.”
As much as the Huskies felt they deserved to be in the NCAA tournament, #xif they had not beaten Cal on Saturday, there was a fairly good chance they would be sitting home next week.
After the game, Pondexter smiled as he hugged the Pac-10 tournament trophy.Rebel Flags
“I’m going to be able to sleep tonight finally,” said Pondexter. “I’ve been going to sleep watching 'SportsCenter' every night hearing if we’re in or out, google优化, or on the bubble or off the bubble. ... We told each other if we handle business we don’t need a committee to decide if we’re good enough.”

Reporting from Mexico City and Washington — Three people connected to the U.S. Consulate in Mexico's deadliest city, Team Canada jerseysCiudad Juarez, were shot to death by men who intercepted their cars as they returned from a *****'s birthday party,#x officials said Sunday. Two of the dead, an American couple, were discovered slain in their vehicle, their uninjured baby crying in the back seat. President Obama on Sunday expressed outrage at the drive-by slayings. The three victims were killed in broad daylight Saturday near the city's border with El Paso.
Ciudad Juarez, a key entry point for drugs into the U.S., has seen a staggering increase in bloodshed as narcotics gangs battle for control of smuggling routes, turf and market share. Mexico's raging drug war has claimed thousands of lives, including those of some Americans. But this appears to be the first time in recent years that Mexican drug traffickers have attacked U.S. diplomatic personnel and their families.
FOR THE RECORD:
A subheadline on an earlier version of this article said a U.S. Consulate worker and his wife had been killed. It should have said a U.S. Consulate worker and her husband had been killed.
In response to the escalating violence, the State Department on Sunday told employees they could send family members and other dependents home to the U.S. from six northern Mexican cities where Washington maintains consulates.#x It also updated its existing travel warnings, cautioning Americans about traveling to or within northern Mexican states and strongly cautioning American youth about spending their spring break in Mexico.
The dead couple were identified by Mexican authorities as Lesley A. Enriquez,Buy in Global, 35,Team Canada jerseysan employee of the consulate, and her husband, Arthur H. Redelfs, 34. Redelfs was a detention officer with the El Paso County Jail, a relative told the Associated Press. Neither the relative nor U.S. officials in Washington were able to specify Enriquez's job at the consulate.
The third person killed was identified as the husband of a Mexican employee of the consulate. He was traveling with two *****ren, both of whom were injured, according to the state prosecutor's office in Ciudad Juarez.
A security official in Ciudad Juarez said the victims were obviously targeted but that the motive was still under investigation.
"The information we have indicates they were specific targets, #xbut the motives behind the attack are not yet known," said the official, who was not authorized to be quoted by name.

Non-Melanoma Skin Cancers in the Millions and Rising
The incidence of non-melanoma skin cancer has steadily increased since the 1990s, pot-pourrimaking it by far the most common form of cancer, affecting more people than all other cancers combined,#x two new studies find.
More than 2 million Americans on Medicare were treated for non-melanoma skin cancer in 2006,托盘, up from 1.6 million in 1992, according to one study. The other found that one in five 70-year-olds has been treated for non-melanoma skin cancer.
Researchers called non-melanoma skin cancer an "epidemic" that is only going to get worse as all those bathing beauties and sun worshippers from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s get older, and their cumulative sun exposure racks up.
"We are dealing with a problem that is not going away," said Dr. Howard Rogers, a dermatologist in Norwich, Conn., and lead author of one of the studies. "The number has kept going up and up at a rate of 4.2 percent every year, on average, from 1992 to 2006," he said.
The studies are published in the March issue of the Archives of Dermatology.
The two types of non-melanoma skin cancer are basal cell and squamous cell. While basal cell carcinoma is slow-growing and rarely fatal, it can damage the surrounding tissue and bone if it's not caught early, pot-pourricausing disfigurement when the cancer is removed.
Squamous cell carcinoma is also rarely fatal, though it can metastasize and spread to the lymph nodes and other organs, Rogers said. When caught early, squamous cell carcinomas are also highly treatable.
In the study by Rogers and colleagues, the researchers analyzed data from two Medicare databases and national surveys. They found the total number of procedures to treat skin cancer in the Medicare population increased by nearly 77 percent between 1992 and 2006. Between 2002 and 2006 alone,#x skin cancer procedures increased by 16 percent.
In the second study, Dr. Robert Stern of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School in Boston, developed a mathematical model to estimate the prevalence of non-melanoma skin cancer in the United States.
With about 13 million white non-Hispanic U.S. residents having been treated for at least one non-melanoma skin cancer at the beginning of 2007, that means non-melanoma skin cancers have struck five times as many people as breast or prostate cancer. More people have had non-melanoma skin cancer than all other cancers combined over the last 31 years, according to the study.
Most of those who had a non-melanoma skin cancer had more than one, with the average being 1.6, he noted.
"This is only going to get worse," said Dr. Suephy Chen, an associate professor of dermatology at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta. "Our population is aging. Those people who grew up in the 1970s and 1980s when there was not a big sun-protection message out there are now coming into their 50s and 60s and are starting to develop skin cancers."
While non-melanoma skin cancers are the most common, melanoma is a serious worry. pot-pourriThough melanoma accounts for less than 5 percent of all skin cancers, #xit was expected to lead to an estimated 8,650 deaths in 2009, according to the American Cancer Society.

A Guide to This Week's Health Care Final Sprint
Ladies and gentlemen, start your engines. decorative fruitHere's a brief guide to the health care final sprint (at least the schedule that we can predict) in the House over the next week:
Monday#x
3pm
This afternoon the fun will begin with an anticipated Congressional Budget Office score followed by* a House Budget Committee markup of the reconciliation amendments that will become the shell that the Senate bill will be added to as an amendment. Presumably, as soon as they're done Chairman Spratt will go to the floor. As a privileged piece of legislation, he must deliver it directly to the floor where it'll be numbered and reported out. Under House rules, the report takes two calendar days before it can be referred to the Rules Committee.
7pm
The House Democratic caucus meets as Dems whip for votes.
Tuesday
*Pelosi's office said the CBO score is now expected Tuesday instead of Monday.
Once they have a bill, Dems need to post it online for at least 72 hours for members to review before a vote. They could post this Monday, but more likely it'll be Tuesday. And it'll probably be continuously tweaked as the bill is examined for potential Byrd Rule challenges, CBO scoring conflicts and other rules hiccups.#x This is not a House rule, but rather a Democratic caucus pledge, one that has been broken in the rush to vote in the past, decorative fruit so it's up to the discretion of the leaders if they want to observe it. But,网站优化, given that they need as much time as possible to whip votes it seems likely that the full 72 hours will be observed.
Wednesday
Michael Scherer tells me that Obama aides expect that the president will meet with Senate and House Dems at some point this week. Not sure where or when -- I just put it in here as there was nothing else going on Wednesday and it seemed the most likely date.
Thursday
12:01am
The two-calendar-day reporting time expires and the Rules Committee can take up the bill. Traditionally, a rule takes one calendar day to ripen but past leaders both Republican and Democrat have gotten around that by including in the rule a provision that essentially declares that same day a whole new day (yes, #xthis is White Rabbit time they'd be observing). If Speaker Pelosi chooses to she can bring up the vote Thursday, decorative fruit but again, she'll need time to whip members so a vote on Friday or Saturday is more likely.

The Girls Who Kicked in Rock’s Door
THE most striking thing about “The Runaways,” a new film about the trailblazing bad-girl rock band from the 1970s that spawned Joan Jett, is how authentic it feels.artificial apple The clubs are properly scuzzy. The dialogue is properly raunchy. The actors can properly sing. The hair is fried and feathered, #xthe skin spotty from weeks of running on little but potato chips and estrogen. From the adrenaline rush of performing to the monotony of rehearsal, it’s a vivid snapshot of life on the road for ambitious teenagers who are constantly told that rock ’n’ roll “is the sport of men.” (And that’s their own manager talking.)
One reason may be that the movie is partly based on “Neon Angel: A Memoir of a Runaway” (Harper Collins), a newly revamped autobiography by the group’s lead singer Cherie Currie, whose chillingly quick self-destruction is relived through Dakota Fanning. Another may be that Ms. Currie and Ms. Jett (played by Kristen Stewart) put the actors through hard-rock boot camp for several weeks before filming. And Floria Sigismondi, the writer and director, artificial apple has “been around music all my life,” as she said in an interview in a hotel room in Midtown. #xAlong with making videos for artists like David Bowie (Ms. Currie’s musical hero) and the White Stripes, she’s worked in clubs and gone on tour with her husband’s band, the Living Things. “I wanted it all to look real. I wanted bed head. I wanted freckles and pimples,” she said of the film, hats, her first feature. The words she kept repeating on the set were “raw” and “gritty.”
The rock lifestyle has been notoriously difficult to get right on film. The mainstream fantasy — sex, drugs, hard-core partying — usually trumps the more tedious reality of musicians striving for success but often becoming trapped by it. The result has been films that end up either bloated and cartoonish (see the American Indian shaman following Jim Morrison around “The Doors”), sweetly sanitized (see the intercourse-avoiding groupies of “Almost Famous”) or as road-to-ruin predictable as “Behind the Music.” But since 2002, when the hyperactive#x “24 Hour Party People” captured the dance-oriented music scene in ’70s and ’80s Manchester, England, there has been a trickle of rock biopics that get the milieu and the music just right, like “Control,” the story of Joy Division, and “What We Do Is Secret,” artificial applethe story of the Germs.

Is the Chinese Yuan Too Cheap?
So here we are, once again, in a nasty round of political bickering over China's currency,Grow lights, Microfiber cloththe yuan (also known as the renminbi). There is a widespread belief around the world that Beijing has been setting the value of the yuan at an artificially cheap level, which gives Chinese exports an unfair advantage in international markets. #xJust a few days ago, President Obama called on China to move towards a more “market-oriented” exchange rate, for the good of the global economy. Chinese officials have never looked kindly upon criticism of its currency regime, and this weekend, none other than Premier Wen Jiabao himself made some of China's strongest protests yet. In a defiant press conference, Wen insisted that the yuan is not undervalued, then went on to blast:
What I don't understand is the practice of depreciating one's own currency and attempting to press other countries to appreciate their own currencies solely for the purpose of increasing one's own exports. This kind of practice I think is a kind of trade protectionism.Microfiber cloth
I have to give Wen special kudos for having the sheer chutzpah to make such a comment, #xsince it's exactly what the world accuses China of doing. That stones-and-glass-houses irony was lost on no one. Yet to be fair to Wen, determining the proper value of China's yuan is no easy task.
The conventional view is that China, with its giant trade surpluses, should have a much more expensive yuan, and the only reason it doesn't appreciate is because the Chinese government won't allow it to. However,#x economists have come up with wildly disparate estimates of where the yuan should be.Microfiber cloth I won't bore you with the details behind these conflicting opinions (because they're boring), but a quick trot through the basics will give you an idea of how complicated a currency the yuan has become.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony: Eyewitness report
“The class of 2010 represents diversity!” #xSo said Rock and Roll Hall of Fame head honcho Jann Wenner at the start of this year’s induction shindig, which was held Monday evening in New York’s Waldorf Astoria Hotel.Traffic barriers
Whether that was the sound of a man relishing rock’s rich pageant, or making lemonade out of some collectively strange-tasting lemons is a debatable point. But there’s no doubt this year’s crop of inductees—Genesis, the Hollies,Buy in Global, the Stooges, Jimmy Cliff, and ABBA—had very little in common, save a willingness to turn up and be feted by their musical peers at the annual celebration of rockitude.
The performances were as varied as the terpsichoreal stylings. Genesis, for example, didn’t play at all, leaving Phish to competently tackle chunks of the prog-rockers’ back catalog. Meanwhile reggae legend Jimmy Cliff tore the place up with renditions of his classic tracks “You Can Get It If You Really Want,” #x“Many Rivers To Cross,” and a Wyclef Jean-assisted “The Harder The Come.” Cliff and his fabulous silver jacket even topped Iggy Pop who, it is perhaps needless to note, went shirtless fronting the Stooges as they stormed through Traffic barriers“Search and Destroy” and “I Wanna Be Your Dog.” ABBA were represented musically by Benny Andersson, who accompanied Faith Hill on piano for a version of “The Winner Takes It All,” and the Hollies sounded merely like an agreeable-ish wedding band, despite boasting the vocal talents of both Graham Nash and Adam Levine from Maroon 5.
Actually, attending the chicken dinner-featuring event was much like going to someone’s nuptials except that, instead of the best man making a speech about the time the groom got an unfortunate rash in Amsterdam, Phish’s Trey Anastasio illuminated us on the excellence of Genesis’ complex time signatures. And that was by no means the end of the speechifying. #x Steven Van Zandt took time out to note the current “spiritual bankruptcy” of the record business when he inducted the Hollies, Billie Joe Armstrong recited a lengthy list of the acts which had been inspired by the Stooges—one that concluded with “…and my own f—ing band”—Traffic barriers and Iggy Pop himself appeared close to tears as he ruminated on his reformed combo’s “lovely, lovely, second act.”

For a night they did, as The Hollies, Jimmy Cliff, Genesis, ABBA and Iggy Pop's Stooges accepted induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Monday — a ceremony almost as notable for who wasn't there as who was.
ABBA sold some 100 million records with hits such as "Waterloo,""Dancing Queen" and "Knowing Me, Knowing You" before disbanding in 1982. Songwriter Benny Andersson described how the melancholy of the "vodka belt" so far north, the pre-rock era music they heard on Swedish radio and the songs of their rock 'n' roll heroes all found their way into ABBA's material.

Keep that in the past tense: Lyngstad told the audience that ABBA would never perform again. She brought along her grandson, a heavy metal musician who nonetheless appreciates grandma's music. NEW YORK -- Mixed economic reports held the stock market to only energy saving lampmodest moves Friday #xbut gains for the week were strong.
Uneven figures on retail sales and consumer confidence gave investors little new insight into the economy.
The reports weren't enough to propel the market higher a day after the Standard & Poor's 500 index closed at its highest level in 17 months. That index slipped Friday, but the Dow Jones industrial average tacked on nearly 13 points.
Major stock indicators climbed for the week after investors grew more upbeat about the health of banks. Shares of Citigroup Inc. rose 13.4 percent for the week.
Stocks had been modestly higher at the start of trading Friday energy saving lampafter a surprising increase in February retail sales. The Commerce Department said retail sales rose 0.3 percent last month. Analysts had expected a drop.
A weaker report on consumer sentiment disappointed traders. The preliminary Reuters/University of Michigan consumer sentiment index for March fell to 72.5 from 73.6 in late February.
Investors also were displeased with the Commerce Department's report that inventories were unchanged. Economists had forecast an increase. Analysts are hoping that businesses will restock store shelves on a consistent basis, which would be a positive signal for the economy.
The reports come as investors look for more signs about the economy's direction. The market bounced higher in the prior week after the Labor Department said employers cut fewer jobs in February#x than economists had expected. But energy saving lamptrading has been more subdued since.

(Reuters) - Congressional Democrats took the first step on Monday#x toward a quick final Supplementvote on a healthcare overhaul and House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi vowed to muster the votes needed to pass it.
With a close vote expected later this week, House Democrats hustled to line up support and President Barack Obama hit the road in Ohio to push his case for a sweeping overhaul of the $2.5 trillion healthcare system.
Republican opponents promised to make Democrats who support the healthcare Supplementbill pay in November's congressional elections, when Democratic control of Congress could be threatened by political fallout over the issue.
But Democratic leaders counseled nervous lawmakers to hold firm and pass the bill, which has been the focus of a political battle that has mired the Congress in legislative gridlock for nine months.
"We need courage," Obama told a crowd in Strongsville, Ohio,登车桥, during his third road trip in the past week to rally support for his top legislative priority. "This debate is about far more than politics."
The House Budget Committee began the drive toward a final vote, advancing changes sought by House Democrats and Obama to the Senate-passed healthcare bill. (Reuters) - Financial markets are gripped by the role derivatives
#x have played in Greece's debt crisis, but Italy Military Flagsalso has a derivatives time bomb, and hundreds of cities are in the 24 billion euro blast zone.
Many local governments eager to cut financing costs for years rushed to sign up for complex derivatives contracts, even when the terms were in English. But some cities, facing big losses when interest rates go up, are now trying to pull out of derivatives and suing the international and local banks that arranged the deals.
In a test case, a judge in Milan will decide in coming weeks whether to try 13 people and four banks -- UBS (UBSN.VX), Deutsche Bank (DBKGn.DE), Germany's Depfa and JPMorgan Chase & Co (JPM.N) -- Military Flagson aggravated fraud charges. Service cracks wireless passwords from the cloud
A security researcher has unveiled a low-cost servicepot pourri for penetration testers that#x checks the security of wireless networks by running passwords against a 135-million-word dictionary.
The WPA Cracker is a cloud-based service that accesses a 400-CPU cluster. For $34, it can run a password against all 135 million entries in about 20 minutes. Those willing to wait 40 minutes can pay $17 to access the system at half mode.
In addition to operating in the cloud, the service is also notable because its dictionary has been set up specifically for cracking Wi-Fi Protected Access passwords. While Windows, Unix and other systems allow short passwords, WPA pass codes must contain a minimum of eight characters. Its entries pot pourriuse a variety of words,网站优化, common phrases and "elite speak" that have been compiled with WPA networks in mind.
WPA Cracker is used by capturing a wireless network's handshake locally and then uploading it, along with the network name. The service then compares the PBKDF2, or Password-Based Key Derivation Function, against the dictionary. The approach makes sense, considering each handshake is salted using the network's ESSID, a technique that makes rainbow tables only so useful.

Prostate test 'public health disaster': discoverer
(Reuters) - The most commonly used tool for detecting prostate cancerartificial pumpkins, routine PSA#x screening, has become "a hugely expensive public health disaster," its discoverer said on Wednesday.
Dr. Richard Ablin of the University of Arizona joined the ongoing debate over the blood test, saying the screening procedure is too costly and ineffective.
"I never dreamed that my discovery four decades ago would lead to such a profit-driven public health disaster," Ablin wrote in a commentary for The New York Times.
Ablin said that as Congress searches for ways to cut costs artificial pumpkinsin the U.S. health care system, a significant savings could come from changing the way PSA is used.
"The test's popularity has led to a hugely expensive public health disaster," he wrote.
He said the annual bill for PSA screening is at least $3 billion, with much of it paid for by Medicare and the Veterans Administration.
"As I've been trying to make clear for many years now, PSA testing can't detect prostate cancer and, more important, it can't distinguish between the two types of prostate cancer -- the one that will kill you and the one that won't," he wrote.
"Instead, the test simply reveals how much of the prostate antigen a man has in his blood."
Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men worldwide after lung cancer, killing 254,Grow lights,000 men a year.
PSA is a protein made only by prostate cells, and levels can shoot up as a prostate tumor proliferates. But levels can also rise as the prostate naturally enlarges with age.
A high PSA #xreading is usually followed by a biopsy, whichartificial pumpkins is a sample of the prostate tissue taken and examined for signs of a tumor.

Lost Levels: Super Mario's Wacky Worlds
[Lost Levels is a semi-monthly (that is, twice a month) column Casual productabout classic games that were never released. It is written by Frank Cifaldi#x, creator of a website about unreleased games titled, appropriately enough, Lost Levels. This column appears on Retronauts on the first and third Friday of every month.]
Since we talked about unreleased Sonic games games last time,Grow lights, I thought it fitting to discuss Mario this week. We only know of a few Mario projects that never made it off the ground, including Miyamoto's first draft of Super Mario Bros. (the story goes that it was scrapped entirely), a two-player version of Super Mario 64, and an adventure on the Virtual Boy. The trouble is, we know very little about these games, and we probably never will.
One game we do know quite a bit about however is Super Mario's Wacky Worlds, an officially sanctioned pseudo-sequel to Super Mario World in development for the CD-i, of all platforms, by NovaLogic. Yes, that's right, the Delta Force guys.
As a lot of you are probably aware of, Nintendo signed a very controversial agreement with Philips in the early 90s to develop a CD-ROM add-on for its Super Nintendo console. The platform Casual productnever materialized (and we should probably talk about why in a future article), but the agreement resulted in two things: one, Philips acquired the licensing rights to use Nintendo characters in games for its CD-i console, and two, Sony - Nintendo's previous partner for a CD-ROM unit - took its revenge for being stabbed in the back and entered the hardware market on its own with its PlayStation.
According to a recollection written by programmer Silas Warner before his unfortunate death in 2004, the origin of Wacky Worlds came from a meeting with Nintendo. NovaLogic had recently shipped The Rocketeer for the Super Nintendo, and were looking for more work from the company.
"A Nintendo sales executive came up with the idea that maybe simple Nintendo titles could play on the CD-i," said Warner. "I suspect he was thinking of some kind of adapter to plug a Nintendo #xcartridge into a CD slot! But it set off a frantic race at NovaLogic. The projectCasual product was to put a popular Nintendo game, Super Mario World, onto a CD-i disc."
